You can capture the current viewport, a specific element, or the full scrollable page. The Docker MCP Catalog’s stdio setup and Microsoft’s repository Docker examples use different images and launch commands, so choose one documented setup and keep its image, flags, and transport together.
Choose how the Docker server will connect to your MCP client
There are two useful patterns: a client-spawned stdio process that starts when your MCP client connects, or a long-lived HTTP service that the client reaches at a URL. The Docker MCP Catalog documents the first pattern; Microsoft’s Playwright MCP repository documents Docker examples including the second. Their image names and commands are not interchangeable.

Use the Docker MCP Catalog’s image and stdio command together, or follow the repository’s image, flags, and HTTP example together. The repository says its Docker implementation currently supports headless Chromium. Client configuration locations and syntax vary, so consult your client’s MCP setup instructions; the Playwright MCP guide lists clients including VS Code, Cursor, Windsurf, and Claude Desktop.
Connect, navigate, and capture
- Start or configure the server. Use the stdio command in your MCP client configuration, or start the repository’s HTTP example and connect to its MCP URL.
- Connect your MCP client. Confirm that the client reports the Playwright MCP server as available. Exact setup UI and configuration file depend on the client.
- Navigate to the page. Ask the client to open the target URL or call
browser_navigatewith the page address. The Docker MCP Catalog lists this navigation tool. - Take the screenshot. Call
browser_take_screenshotwith the desired scope and output options.
The screenshot tool supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP. Without a target it captures the current viewport; specify target to capture an element, or set fullPage: true to capture the full scrollable page. Full-page capture cannot be combined with an element target. The supported parameters are documented in Playwright’s screenshot tool reference.

Choose screenshot scope, format, and resolution
Viewport, element, or full page
- Viewport: Omit
targetandfullPageto capture what is currently visible in the browser viewport. - Element: Set
targetto capture a particular element. Use this when you need a component, chart, or other region rather than the entire page. - Full page: Set
fullPage: trueto capture the full scrollable document. Do not combine this withtarget.
Format and pixel scale
Choose PNG, JPEG, or WebP using the screenshot tool’s format option. The scale option controls resolution: "css" (the default) uses CSS pixels, while "device" uses device-pixel resolution. Device scale can produce a larger image; select it when the higher pixel density is useful for visual inspection.
Set the filename and find the result
Set filename to choose the saved image’s name. Relative filenames resolve against the workspace root. If you omit the filename, the tool uses a timestamped default in its output directory. Omitting it also returns the image inline to the model unless image responses are suppressed. If you need a predictable file location, provide a filename and check the workspace used by your MCP client.

Use screenshots for visual checks and snapshots for page structure
A screenshot is useful for checking visual layout, inspecting charts or canvas content, and documenting a visual bug. It is not the best source of element references for interaction. Playwright MCP works with the accessibility tree and provides references that the client can use in interaction calls; use an accessibility snapshot when you need page structure, text, or controls to locate and operate.
Security and operating considerations
- Do not treat Docker as a security boundary. Microsoft’s repository says Playwright MCP is not a security boundary. The server can browse pages requested through the client, so apply client-level permissions and trust controls appropriate to your environment.
- Be cautious with unsafe code execution. The Playwright MCP guide warns that
browser_run_code_unsafeexecutes arbitrary JavaScript in the server process and is equivalent to remote code execution. Enable it only for trusted MCP clients. - Expect headless Chromium in the documented Docker implementation. The repository notes that its Docker implementation currently supports headless Chromium; do not assume the container examples provide a visible browser window.
- Allow for page behavior and load time. A screenshot reflects what the browser has rendered at capture time. Pages with delayed content or heavy scripts may need additional waiting in the browser workflow; no performance benchmark or fixed capture time is established by the setup documentation.
Troubleshoot common capture problems
The MCP client cannot start or reach the server
Check that the client configuration matches the deployment type. For stdio, configure the client to launch the catalog command docker run -i --rm mcp/playwright. For HTTP, use the repository’s image and launch flags together, confirm the container publishes port 8931, and point the client to http://localhost:8931/mcp. Do not combine the catalog image with repository-specific HTTP flags without documentation that supports that combination.

The screenshot is missing content
The capture may have happened before delayed content appeared. Wait for the page to finish rendering before calling the screenshot tool, then capture again. For content that extends beyond the viewport, use fullPage: true rather than assuming a viewport capture includes the entire document.
An element screenshot fails or captures the wrong area
Confirm that the target is available on the current page and that you have not set fullPage: true; the two options cannot be used together. If you need the full page, remove the target. If you need one element, omit the full-page option.

The saved image is not where expected
Set an explicit filename and remember that relative paths resolve against the workspace root. When no filename is supplied, look in the tool’s output directory for the timestamped default; the image may instead appear inline if image responses are enabled.
The output looks lower-resolution than expected
Check the scale setting. The default "css" uses CSS pixels; set "device" for device-pixel resolution when that is the output you need.
