For a whole-page capture, start with await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true }). If a fixed header covers content you need to read, Puppeteer’s documented controls let you capture a chosen rectangle with clip or temporarily hide the site-specific header before capturing. The official API does not guarantee how fixed or sticky elements will appear in every full-page screenshot, so verify the result with your target page and installed Puppeteer version.
Choose the capture method for the output you need
| What you need | Puppeteer method | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| The entire rendered document | page.screenshot({ fullPage: true }) |
Convenient for long pages, but the reviewed API documentation does not specify fixed- or sticky-header composition in every case. |
| A specific rectangular region | page.screenshot({ clip: { x, y, width, height } }) |
You control the output bounds; choose coordinates and dimensions for the page and viewport. |
| One particular element | element.screenshot() |
Captures that element, scrolling it into view if needed; it is not a whole-document capture. |
| Content obscured by a persistent header | Temporarily change the header’s CSS, then capture | Page-specific technique inferred from the screenshot APIs, not a documented fixed-header recipe. Restore the page state if reusing the page. |
Capture the entire long page
Use fullPage: true when you want Puppeteer to request a screenshot of the full page in its normal rendered appearance:
await page.screenshot({
path: 'page.png',
fullPage: true,
});
This is the simplest starting point. However, a fixed header can visually cover content, and the official Puppeteer references do not promise whether fixed or sticky elements will appear once, repeat, or obscure content in every configuration. Inspect the saved image rather than assuming fullPage resolves an overlap.
Exclude the header band with a clip
If you need a bounded image that omits the top header area, define the capture rectangle with clip:
await page.screenshot({
path: 'content.png',
clip: { x: 0, y: 80, width: 1280, height: 900 },
});
The coordinates above are examples, not universal measurements. Set them for the page and output you want. A clip controls which rectangle is captured; it does not change the layout or move content that sits beneath a fixed header. When a clip is supplied, Puppeteer documents captureBeyondViewport as defaulting to true.
Hide a fixed header when you need the covered content
If the required content lies beneath a fixed header, you can apply a temporary style before the screenshot. This is an implementation approach based on Puppeteer’s page-side styling and screenshot APIs, not an official guarantee or universal recipe. Replace header with the selector that matches the target site.

const style = await page.addStyleTag({
content: 'header { visibility: hidden !important; }',
});
try {
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await style.evaluate(element => element.remove());
}
visibility: hidden hides the header visually but generally leaves its layout space in place. If that is not the desired result, test an alternative such as display: none on the page you are capturing. The right choice depends on how the site positions the header and how the resulting image should look. The example removes the injected style even if capture fails; if the page is reused, ensure other page modifications are also cleaned up or reload the page.

const element = await page.waitForSelector('.article-content');

await element.screenshot({ path: 'article.png' });
Puppeteer’s element screenshot method scrolls the element into view if needed. Choose this method for a focused element capture; it does not mean “capture the entire long page.”
Check version and screenshot output
Puppeteer’s documentation identified version 25.12.0 at the time the references were accessed. Screenshot behavior has changed historically, including full-page viewport-reset fixes and changes involving clipping. Check the documentation and changelog for the version installed in your project when output differs from an example, and validate against the browser and site you actually use.

Page.screenshot() returns a Uint8Array by default; the API also supports a base64 string through its encoding option. The API reference notes that certain page lifecycle operations in a BrowserContext wait for screenshots to finish to avoid interference.
Troubleshoot a header or content that looks wrong
- The header covers text in the image: Try a clip that excludes the header band, or temporarily hide the site-specific header. A clip alone will not shift underlying content.
- The clipped image omits wanted content: Recheck
x,y,widthandheightagainst the target page and desired output. The sample rectangle is illustrative only. - Hiding the header leaves an empty strip: That may be because the header still occupies layout space. Test a different CSS treatment, such as
display: none, and inspect the result. - The full-page image differs from expectations: Fixed and sticky composition is not guaranteed by the reviewed API documentation. Test the target page with the installed Puppeteer version rather than relying on a universal behavior.
- The page remains modified after capture: Put cleanup in a
finallyblock and remove injected styles or reload the page before reusing it. - An older example behaves differently: Check the installed version’s screenshot documentation and changelog; screenshot and clip behavior has received changes over time.
