There is no single RAM number for all three games. Minecraft Bedrock’s official requirements list 4 GB, while its FAQ says small servers can start with at least 1 GB. Rust’s dedicated-server guide calls for 12 GB of free RAM and warns that a 6k map needs more. ARK varies dramatically by edition and map: an empty ARK: Survival Evolved Genesis: Part 2 save can use 10–12.5 GiB, while measured ARK: Survival Ascended maps use about 7–12 GiB before the operating system is counted. These are server-process or free-memory figures, not automatically the amount of physical RAM your entire host should have.
What determines a server’s RAM requirement?
RAM usage depends on the workload, not just the game’s name. Before buying memory, identify the edition and server software, map or world size, expected concurrent players, mods, configuration, and how long the world has been running. A new empty save can use far less memory than the same map after players have built structures, tamed creatures, filled storage, and added mods.
Also distinguish three different measurements:
- Server-process memory: RAM consumed by the game server itself.
- Free RAM: memory a server guide asks you to have available before starting the process.
- Total host memory: physical RAM needed for the game, operating system, background services, monitoring tools, and possibly a game client on the same machine.
A number in one category cannot be transferred directly to another. For example, Rust’s 12 GB figure is free RAM for its dedicated server, whereas the ARK figures below are measured map usage that explicitly excludes the operating system.
Minecraft server RAM: the official figures are Bedrock-only
The current Minecraft Bedrock Dedicated Server page lists 4 GB of RAM in its system requirements. The same page’s FAQ says a small server needs at least 1 GB, and that larger worlds or more players require additional memory, storage, and processing power.

Those statements describe Minecraft Bedrock Dedicated Server. They do not establish a requirement for Minecraft Java Edition. Java server memory depends heavily on the server version, Java runtime, view and simulation settings, plugins or mods, world size, and player activity; no authoritative Java figure is established here, so do not use the Bedrock numbers as a Java recommendation.
How to interpret the Bedrock numbers
- Small, lightly used Bedrock world: the FAQ’s 1 GB is a stated starting point, not a guarantee of smooth performance under every setting.
- Published system requirement: 4 GB is the current Bedrock Dedicated Server requirement shown by Minecraft.net.
- Growing world or larger population: Minecraft explicitly says to add memory and other resources as the world and player count increase.
When planning a host, leave room for the operating system and any other services. A machine with exactly the server’s listed figure has no allowance for those workloads, and a player running the Bedrock client on that same computer consumes additional memory.

Facepunch’s dedicated-server creation guidance says to have 12 GB of free RAM. It also warns that a 6k map uses more and explains that requirements are not fixed: use case and server population have a major effect. Its concise rule is that “the larger the map, the more disk space and memory you need.”
Because the wording is “free RAM,” treat 12 GB as memory available for the dedicated-server workload after the operating system and other active services have been considered. It is not a statement that every Rust host should contain only 12 GB total. A 6k map, a busy population, plugins, or additional services can require more headroom.
Do not confuse Rust server and client requirements
The Rust game-client requirements list 12 GB minimum and 16 GB recommended. Those figures are for running the player’s client, not for sizing a dedicated server. If one computer hosts the server and someone also plays Rust on it, budget for both workloads independently; the client’s recommendation does not replace the dedicated-server guidance.

Rust sizing checklist
- Confirm the map size before deployment, especially if using a 6k map.
- Count the expected concurrent population rather than the number of registered accounts.
- Reserve the documented 12 GB of free RAM before the server starts.
- Add capacity for the operating system, administration tools, plugins, backups, and any local game client.
- Recheck memory after the server is populated; the documentation says requirements vary with use case and population.
ARK: Survival Evolved RAM by map
ARK: Survival Evolved has unusually wide map-to-map variation. The ARK Official Community Wiki’s dedicated-server table reports memory for new world saves, default settings, and no connected players. Values below are in GiB and exclude the operating system.
| Map | Empty-save memory |
|---|---|
| The Island | 3.5–4.5 GiB |
| The Center | Generally 3–4 GiB |
| Scorched Earth | Generally 3–4 GiB |
| Aberration | Generally 3–4 GiB |
| Extinction | Generally 3–4 GiB |
| Other maps listed in the table in the same range | Generally 3–4 GiB |
| Ragnarok | 4–5 GiB |
| Fjordur | 4–5 GiB |
| Genesis: Part 1 | 5–6 GiB |
| Crystal Isles | 5.5–6.5 GiB |
| Lost Island | 5.5–7 GiB |
| Genesis: Part 2 | 10–12.5 GiB |
Genesis: Part 2 therefore starts at a much higher measured baseline than The Island, even before players connect. These are observations for the stated test conditions, not a promise that a mature or modded server will remain inside the same range.
ARK: Survival Ascended uses more memory on the measured maps
The same setup table reports higher empty-map figures for ARK: Survival Ascended. Again, the measurements are for new saves with default settings and no connected players, and they exclude the operating system.
| Map | Empty-save memory |
|---|---|
| The Island | 8–10 GiB |
| The Center | 10.5–12 GiB |
| Scorched Earth | 7.5–9 GiB |
| Aberration | 8–10 GiB |
| Extinction | 7–8.5 GiB |
Several other Ascended-map entries are unavailable in the table. Do not estimate those maps by copying a value from another map. The page also cautions that usage can appear lower on a machine with less memory available, with a possible performance impact; a lower observed number is not proof that the workload has become lighter.
Why ARK memory grows after launch
ARK’s empty-map numbers are only a starting point. The setup guidance states that, excluding the operating system, memory varies by map and increases with connected players, game age, structures, creatures, storage, server configuration, and installed mods.

- Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.
Player population
For ARK: Survival Evolved, the page gives an average increase of 50–150 MiB per connected player. This is an average, not a guaranteed increment: player behavior, map activity, and server state can produce different results. Use it as a planning signal rather than a precise per-slot formula.
World age and persistent objects
A long-running world can hold considerably more state than a fresh save. Player-built structures, tamed or wild creatures, and stored items all contribute to the saved and active world. Creature respawning can also make memory rise or fluctuate while the server is running.
Settings and mods
Configuration changes and mods alter the workload. A heavily modified server should be measured after its complete mod list and settings are active; an empty default-map measurement cannot validate that configuration.

How to choose the right amount of physical RAM
Use the documented figure as the game workload, then size the entire host around it. This process avoids treating a server-process number as a universal hardware recommendation.
- Identify the exact edition. Record Bedrock versus Java for Minecraft and Survival Evolved versus Survival Ascended for ARK.
- Record the map or world. For Rust, note the map size; for ARK, use the map-specific baseline rather than a generic ARK number.
- Define peak concurrency. Use the largest number of players expected at one time, including scheduled events.
- List persistent workload. Include mods, plugins, configuration changes, backups, monitoring, databases, and any other services on the machine.
- Add operating-system and client headroom. Minecraft’s and ARK’s cited values do not represent every process on the host; Rust’s 12 GB figure is explicitly free RAM.
- Measure under peak conditions. Watch memory during a busy session and after the world has accumulated structures, creatures, and storage. Leave enough unused memory to prevent swapping and allow normal background tasks.
- Reassess after changes. A larger map, new mod pack, population increase, or additional service invalidates an earlier estimate.
When purchasing an upgrade, verify that the motherboard and processor support the RAM generation, capacity per slot, channel layout, and module type. A phrase such as “16GB DDR4 RAM kit” describes a searchable product category, not a universal solution: the correct kit depends on the host hardware, and 16 GB may be insufficient for a high-memory ARK map or a combined server-and-client workload.

Symptoms of an undersized host and what to check
- Memory remains nearly full: check whether the operating system, backups, or another service is consuming the headroom that the game requires.
- Performance worsens as the world ages: compare current usage with the fresh-save baseline; persistent structures, creatures, storage, and mods can explain the increase.
- ARK usage fluctuates: observe during creature respawning and peak player activity rather than relying on an idle reading.
- Rust fails after changing maps: verify available free RAM and remember that a 6k map needs more than the documented baseline.
- Local hosting affects gameplay: include the player client’s memory in the host budget; Rust’s 12 GB minimum and 16 GB recommendation apply to that client, not the server.
If the host cannot maintain headroom, reduce the workload where the game supports it—such as map size, mods, or concurrent services—or move the server to a machine with more compatible physical RAM. Do not infer that a lower observed allocation means the server is safely sized; constrained systems can trade memory usage for performance.
Quick comparison
| Game and scope | Published or measured figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Minecraft Bedrock Dedicated Server | At least 1 GB for small servers; 4 GB system requirement | Official Minecraft figures; larger worlds and populations need more. Java Edition is not covered by these numbers. |
| Rust dedicated server | 12 GB free RAM | Facepunch guidance; a 6k map uses more and requirements vary by use case and population. |
| Rust game client | 12 GB minimum; 16 GB recommended | Client memory only, not dedicated-server sizing. |
| ARK: Survival Evolved | About 3–12.5 GiB for the listed empty maps | New saves, default settings, no players; excludes the operating system. Genesis: Part 2 is 10–12.5 GiB. |
| ARK: Survival Ascended | About 7–12 GiB for the measured maps | New saves, default settings, no players; excludes the operating system. Other entries are unavailable. |
Bottom line for each game
Minecraft
For Bedrock, the official material ranges from at least 1 GB for a small server to a 4 GB listed system requirement, with more needed as worlds and populations grow. Do not present those figures as Java Edition guidance.
Recommended Free Tools
Rust
Start planning around 12 GB of free RAM for the dedicated server, then increase the host budget for a 6k map, larger populations, other services, or a local client.
ARK
Choose by edition and map first. Survival Evolved ranges from roughly 3–4 GiB on several empty maps to 10–12.5 GiB on Genesis: Part 2; measured Survival Ascended maps range from 7–8.5 GiB to 10.5–12 GiB before the operating system. Add capacity for players, world age, mods, and the rest of the host workload.
