AI coding assistants can make code faster to produce, but they do not remove the need to check what that code does. Shikhar Thakur calls the effort of reviewing unfamiliar generated code the “Cognitive Verification Tax.” His proposed response is Glow Comments, an editor extension that brings selected comments and diagnostics into visual focus. It is a way to direct attention during a review—not proof that code is correct or that reviews become faster.

What Thakur means by the “Cognitive Verification Tax”

Thakur’s phrase describes a shift in effort: when an AI assistant writes code, a developer may spend less time typing syntax and more time understanding and verifying code they did not author. It is his framing of a work experience, not a scientific construct established or quantified by the article. The article cites no study measuring how often this burden occurs or how large it is.

The concern is practical. Generated code can appear tidy while still containing an incomplete mock implementation, an unverified assumption, a silent failure, or missing boundary validation. These are illustrative possibilities, not measured incident rates, and Glow Comments is not described as a semantic security analyzer that automatically finds them.

How Glow Comments is intended to focus a review

In a creator-authored DEV Community article dated September 23, 2026, Thakur describes the extension as a visual HUD for code review. The idea is not to rewrite a file or certify it. Instead, the interface changes the visual hierarchy of a file so that explicit warnings are easier to find.

Audit Lens

The article says the Audit Lens dims unflagged code and keeps selected comment tags and diagnostics prominent. Tags it names include // !, // FIXME:, // TODO:, and // HACK:. A reviewer can therefore begin with the places that someone has deliberately marked rather than treating every line as equally prominent.

Thakur gives Cmd + K, Cmd + G as the macOS shortcut and Ctrl + Alt + G for Windows and Linux. Keybindings can be changed by an editor, another extension, or a user profile. If those combinations do not work, search the command palette or inspect the extension’s current keybinding instead of assuming the installation is broken.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The article reports that safe, unflagged code is reduced to 22% opacity. That number is a design claim attributed to Thakur, not a result accompanied by a test protocol. In practice, a reviewer should check whether dimmed text remains readable enough to understand surrounding context, especially when a flagged line depends on code several screens away.

A practical Audit Lens sequence

  1. Open the changed files. Start with the diff or generated file in the editor where Glow Comments is installed.
  2. Run the command. Use the stated shortcut if it is active, or invoke Audit Lens through the command palette.
  3. Scan explicit markers. Move through !, FIXME, TODO, and HACK comments and read the surrounding function, inputs, and callers.
  4. Follow diagnostics. Inspect the compiler and linter messages that remain visually prominent, then open the source location and determine whether the diagnostic reflects a real defect, an intentional exception, or a configuration issue.
  5. Turn the lens off for context. A dimmed view is a navigation aid. Restore the normal editor view when you need to trace control flow, data movement, or dependencies.
  6. Record decisions. Resolve, rewrite, or explicitly accept each marker rather than treating visibility as completion.

This sequence keeps the extension in an appropriate role: it helps a human choose where to look first. It does not decide what a marker means or whether a generated implementation satisfies a requirement.

Diagnostic highlighting

The article describes highlighting compiler and linter diagnostics through the VS Code diagnostic provider. It identifies crimson for errors and amber for warnings. Those colors are presented as the extension’s visual convention, not a guarantee that every editor theme or version will render them identically.

Diagnostics are outputs from language services and configured tools. They can expose syntax errors, type mismatches, lint violations, or other conditions those tools understand. They cannot demonstrate that code without a diagnostic is safe, complete, performant, or faithful to a product requirement. A generated function can compile while mishandling an empty input, swallowing an exception, trusting an unverified value, or leaving a mock path in production.

Diagnostic fingerprinting and debouncing

Thakur claims diagnostic fingerprinting and 80 ms debouncing. Debouncing generally means waiting briefly before processing a burst of editor updates, while fingerprinting can help distinguish a changed diagnostic from one that is already known. The article does not provide implementation measurements, test cases, or a comparison with other diagnostic displays. Treat 80 ms as a creator-stated implementation figure, not a latency guarantee for every project, language server, or machine.

Theme and agent-rule options

Glow Comments is described as offering separate color choices for light and dark themes. This matters because a color that stands out on a dark background can become faint, saturated, or uncomfortable on a light one. Thakur says the light-theme palette reaches at least a 4.5:1 contrast ratio, but the article supplies no audit method or result that can be independently checked. It should not be treated as verified WCAG compliance.

The extension also has a command to initialize AI-agent instruction rules in project files such as .cursorrules, CLAUDE.md, or AGENTS.md. The useful question is not simply whether a file appears. Review the generated content, decide whether it matches the project’s actual practices, and check it into version control only if the team wants those instructions shared. The article does not establish that every named editor, agent, or file format behaves identically.

What the published figures do—and do not—show

The DEV article reports four memorable figures: 22% opacity for unflagged code, an “8-second” audit example for a 500-line example, 80 ms debouncing for diagnostic fingerprinting, and a light-theme contrast claim of at least 4.5:1. All four are attributed to Thakur. No test protocol, participant description, benchmark, display matrix, or reproducible measurement is supplied.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The eight-second example is therefore an illustration of the intended interaction, not evidence that a person can reliably audit 500 lines in eight seconds. Review time depends on the language, domain, change size, number of markers, quality of diagnostics, and the reviewer’s familiarity with the code. Likewise, a contrast ratio can vary with rendered colors, font weight, antialiasing, editor chrome, and the display on which it is viewed.

Readers who need accessibility assurances should test the extension with their own light and dark themes, zoom level, color-vision needs, and assistive workflow. They should also verify that dimming does not hide information they rely on. A visual aid that improves salience for one person can reduce legibility for another.

Where a visual HUD fits in code review

Glow Comments’ approach is easiest to evaluate by comparing review methods rather than by assuming it replaces them.

Approach What it can surface What still requires human judgment
Glow Comments Audit Lens Marked comments and diagnostics made visually prominent Whether the marker is accurate, whether unmarked code is correct, and how the change fits the system
Normal editor and diff review Line-level changes, context, control flow, and surrounding code Prioritizing a large generated file without additional visual cues
Compiler and linter output Issues recognized by configured language services and rules Semantic requirements, business logic, security assumptions, and missing tests
Automated tests Behavior covered by the test suite and its assertions Uncovered paths, weak assertions, incorrect fixtures, and requirements not encoded in tests

This comparison is about the role each method can play, not a performance ranking. The cited article provides no comparative defect-rate or review-time data.

A disciplined workflow for AI-generated changes

A visual lens works best when paired with a review routine that makes its limits explicit.

  1. Define the intended behavior first. Write down inputs, outputs, failure behavior, authorization expectations, and boundary conditions before accepting generated code.
  2. Inspect the diff. Confirm that the assistant changed only the requested files and did not leave debugging code, placeholder branches, or broad unrelated edits.
  3. Use Audit Lens for triage. Visit every explicit marker and diagnostic, then widen the review to the function and its callers.
  4. Challenge assumptions. Ask where values originate, which cases are impossible by assumption, and what happens when an external service, parser, or database returns an unexpected result.
  5. Run the project’s checks. Compile, lint, and test using the project’s normal commands. A clean run is evidence about those checks, not a proof of correctness.
  6. Review sensitive boundaries manually. Authentication, authorization, file paths, network requests, deserialization, secrets, and user-controlled input need domain-specific inspection that the described extension does not provide.
  7. Resolve the record. Remove stale TODOs, explain intentional FIXME or HACK comments, and leave a follow-up issue when a marker represents work that cannot be completed in the current change.

That process addresses the central concern without pretending that visual emphasis is semantic analysis.

What Glow Comments does not claim to do

  • It is not presented as a security scanner or vulnerability detector.
  • It does not prove that generated code meets a specification.
  • It does not replace tests, type checking, linting, dependency review, or a human reading the relevant logic.
  • It does not make every hidden assumption visible automatically.
  • It does not establish that a file without a marker is safe.
  • It does not come with independently reported evidence that it reduces review time or catches more defects.

These boundaries are important for teams tempted to treat a polished interface as a guarantee. The extension highlights signals that already exist or that a developer has marked. It cannot know that a missing validation check should have been present unless another tool or person identifies it.

Cost, licensing, and adoption checks

Thakur describes Glow Comments v0.2.3 as free and MIT-licensed. The article names Marketplace and Open VSX as distribution routes. Those details make the tool inexpensive to try, but they do not answer operational questions for a team.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before standardizing on it, verify the current listing, release version, repository license, supported editor versions, and installation source. Confirm whether Cursor and Windsurf expose the commands and diagnostic APIs in the same way as VS Code. Check how settings are synchronized, whether workspace-level configuration is committed, and whether the extension behaves acceptably in remote or container-based development if those environments matter to your team. The cited article does not establish those compatibility details.

Because the project is described as free, the main adoption cost is evaluation time: installing it, checking keybindings, reviewing color behavior, and deciding whether the visual reduction helps or distracts. A short trial on representative generated changes is more informative than assuming that the stated eight-second example will transfer to your workflow.

Who is most likely to benefit

The described design may appeal to developers who already use structured comment tags and want a quick way to navigate a noisy generated file. Teams that rely heavily on compiler and linter diagnostics may also value having those signals grouped visually with review comments.

It may be less suitable as a sole review method for safety-critical code, security-sensitive changes, or projects with sparse comments and weak diagnostics. In those settings, the absence of glowing markers could create false reassurance. The extension is best treated as a layer over an existing review discipline, not as a replacement for one.

Questions worth answering in a real evaluation

A team deciding whether to keep Glow Comments should record observations rather than repeat product claims. Can reviewers find marked issues more consistently? Does dimming slow comprehension of surrounding code? Do the colors remain legible in the team’s actual themes? How often do markers prove stale or misleading? Does the command work in each supported editor and remote setup? Are diagnostics updated promptly enough during normal editing?

For stronger evidence, teams could use the same set of representative changes with and without the lens, document review time and missed markers, and publish the procedure and limitations. That would test the questions the DEV article leaves open without assuming that its figures generalize.

Availability and evidence to check before adopting it

The creator’s article identifies Marketplace and Open VSX as distribution routes and describes the project as free and MIT licensed. Current listing availability, repository license status, compatibility by editor version, and actual feature behavior were not independently established. Check the relevant listing and project materials for the release and license you intend to use.

The cited article is useful for learning what its creator says Glow Comments does, but it is not an independent evaluation of review-time savings, defect detection, accessibility, adoption, or performance. For a practical trial, verify that the commands and markers work in your editor, inspect the result in your own themes, and decide whether the visual emphasis helps your review without obscuring code you need to understand.

How do I activate Audit Lens?

Thakur lists Cmd + K, Cmd + G on macOS and Ctrl + Alt + G on Windows and Linux. If those shortcuts are unavailable, use the command palette or inspect your editor’s keybindings.

Which comments remain visible in Audit Lens?

The article names // !, // FIXME:, // TODO:, and // HACK:. Treat them as navigation markers and inspect their surrounding logic; a marker is not a verdict.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Glow Comments find security vulnerabilities or semantic bugs automatically?

It is described as highlighting selected comments and compiler or linter diagnostics. The article does not present it as a semantic security analyzer or provide evidence that it detects hidden validation, authorization, or logic defects.

Are the 22%, eight-second, 80 ms, and 4.5:1 figures independently verified?

No independent validation is supplied. They are creator-reported figures, and the article gives no test protocol showing that they generalize across users, projects, displays, themes, or machines.

Is the extension free?

Thakur describes Glow Comments v0.2.3 as free and MIT-licensed. Confirm the current repository license and release details before adopting it for a team or distributing it internally.

What should I do after a marker or diagnostic is highlighted?

Read the surrounding function and its callers, determine whether the issue is real or intentional, run the project’s checks, and resolve or document the marker. Restore the normal editor view when you need broader context.

The Bottom Line

Glow Comments is presented as a visual attention aid for AI-assisted code review: it dims unflagged code and emphasizes selected comments and diagnostics. That can make a review easier to navigate, but the product’s speed, latency, and contrast figures remain creator-reported, and the extension is not described as proof of correctness or automatic security analysis. Try it in your actual editor, theme, and workflow, then judge it by observed usefulness rather than by the headline numbers.
