Choose the iPhone 18 Pro Max if you prefer iOS, depend on Apple devices and services, or want Apple’s new variable-aperture main camera. These are the current models in this comparison, announced by Samsung in February 2026 and Apple on September 9, 2026; availability and pricing can vary by market.
Start with the operating system and devices you already use
For most buyers, the central question is not which phone has the longer feature list; it is which platform better fits everyday use. If you already rely on iOS, Apple services, or continuity between an iPhone and other Apple devices, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is the natural place to start. If you want Android’s customization and Samsung’s particular tools, the Galaxy S26 Ultra is the stronger fit.
Apple announced iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max on September 9, 2026, and Samsung announced the Galaxy S26 series in February 2026. Check that both models are available in your region and that the version you are considering supports your carrier and preferred SIM arrangement.
What separates the Galaxy and iPhone day to day?
Galaxy S26 Ultra: S Pen, Android customization, and DeX
The S26 Ultra includes a built-in S Pen. It is useful if you regularly annotate documents, take handwritten notes, sketch, or prefer stylus input; if you will rarely reach for it, its presence alone is not a compelling reason to buy the phone. Samsung also lists DeX, a feature for using the phone in a desktop-style workflow. It matters most to someone who expects to use that workflow, rather than simply because it appears on a specification sheet. Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra specifications describe the device and its features.

iPhone 18 Pro Max: iOS 27 and Apple services
The iPhone runs iOS 27 and is the better match for buyers who prefer Apple’s operating system and already use its devices or services. Apple also highlights Apple Intelligence and Siri AI; the availability of intelligence features varies by region and supported language. Check Apple’s current feature availability for your location before making those capabilities a deciding factor. Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro announcement describes the model and its software features.
Camera hardware: zoom flexibility or variable aperture?
The phones take different hardware approaches. Samsung lists a 200 MP main camera and multiple rear cameras with optical zoom options. Apple highlights a 48 MP Fusion main camera with variable aperture. These specifications describe features, not a verdict on which phone takes better photos: megapixel counts and zoom labels do not establish image quality.

For a camera decision, look for recent independent sample comparisons that include the subjects and conditions you care about—for example, indoor scenes, moving subjects, portraits, or video. Compare results at the zoom levels you actually use. The available specifications do not establish a comparable independent cross-device camera score.
Both screens are 6.9 inches, but that does not settle comfort
Both manufacturers give their large phones a nominal 6.9-inch display. Samsung measures the S26 Ultra as 6.9 inches across the full rectangle; the usable area is smaller because of rounded corners and the camera opening. Apple specifies a 6.9-inch OLED display for the iPhone 18 Pro Max. A matching diagonal does not mean matching usable screen area or a comfortable fit in your hand. If possible, hold each phone before buying, especially if you prefer one-handed use or carry your phone in a small pocket.

Battery life: do not compare capacity with a playback estimate
Samsung lists a 5,000 mAh typical battery capacity for the S26 Ultra. Apple claims up to 45 hours of video playback for eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pro Max models, based on Apple’s own test conditions. Capacity and vendor-reported playback time are different kinds of measurements, so these figures do not identify a battery-life winner. A fair comparison requires recent independent testing under the same protocol and conditions.
