For better foldable-phone photos, use the hinge as a stand, frame shots with the display that gives you the best view, and use a timer for groups. For low-light or night-sky shots, choose the camera mode made for the scene and keep the phone steady. Manual controls and menu paths depend on the exact phone model.
Use the hinge and screens to frame shots
A foldable phone’s hinge can serve as a built-in support, so you may not need to hold it for every shot. On compatible Samsung Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip models, open Camera and partly fold the phone into Flex mode. Samsung says the viewfinder and controls can adapt to the two screen halves on supported devices, but compatibility varies by app and phone. Samsung explains Flex mode support.
For a hands-free photo, set the phone on a stable surface and adjust the hinge until the camera points where you want. A separate stand or tripod is optional; it may help when the phone’s shape or the surface makes positioning difficult. Flex-mode behavior is not universal across camera apps.
Frame a rear-camera selfie with the cover screen
On supported Google Pixel Fold models, you can use the outer display as a preview while taking a selfie with the rear cameras. This lets you compose the image using the rear-camera view rather than relying on a front-facing camera. Follow the Pixel Fold camera instructions for the steps on your device.

Set up a group photo with tabletop mode and a timer
On Pixel Fold, place the phone in an L shape in tabletop mode, aim the rear cameras at the group, then select a 3- or 10-second timer. The delay gives you time to join the frame after starting the shot. Google’s instructions are specific to Pixel Fold; the timer location and foldable-mode behavior may differ in other camera apps.
- Place the phone on a stable surface and fold it into an L shape.
- Open the camera and compose the group using the rear-camera preview.
- Choose the 3- or 10-second timer, start the capture, and move into the frame.
Use night mode for low light and the night sky
For astrophotography on Pixel Fold, Google’s instructions are to turn on Night Sight, unfold the phone into an L shape, and place it on a steady surface. Wait until “Astrophotography on” appears, then keep the phone still while the countdown runs. If astrophotography does not activate automatically, select Night Sight and move the slider to Astro. For other foldables, use the night or low-light mode available in that phone’s camera app and stabilize the phone during capture. Do not assume that the Pixel Night Sight steps or labels apply to another manufacturer’s camera.
Try manual controls only when your model provides them
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 Pro and Pro Video
On Galaxy Z Fold6, Samsung places Pro and Pro Video under Camera > More. The modes include controls such as shutter speed, focus, and zoom. Change one control at a time and compare the results in the lighting where you plan to shoot; a manual adjustment is not automatically an improvement. Refer to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold6 camera guide for the documented controls.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra Camera Assistant
Samsung’s Z Fold8 Ultra Camera Assistant guide lists several model-specific options: Quick tap shutter, Auto lens switching, Photo softening, Auto HDR, and a 24 MP resolution option. These change how capture or processing works; whether a setting suits your photo depends on the result you want. The 24 MP figure is a documented resolution option, not evidence that it produces better photos in every situation. Check Samsung’s Camera Assistant guidance for this model, and expect availability or menu details to vary by software.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 FlexCam
In Samsung’s documented Z Flip6 FlexCam flow, Auto zoom is on by default and can follow movement. You can adjust zoom manually with the slider or a pinch gesture. This behavior is specific to the Z Flip6 feature described in Samsung’s FlexCam guide; do not assume other Flip models or camera apps behave the same way.

Check the exact phone and camera app
Foldable camera workflows vary by device family, model, software, and app. Before looking for a particular setting, identify whether your phone is a clamshell Flip or book-style Fold, whether its camera supports Flex or tabletop positioning, which display can preview rear-camera shots, and whether it offers manual or Camera Assistant controls. If a setting is absent, it may not be supported on that model rather than hidden in a different menu. Samsung notes that Flex mode compatibility varies by app; manufacturer guidance can change as software is updated.
The instructions here cover selected Samsung Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip models and Google Pixel Fold. They should not be treated as universal Android camera steps.
