Detection only shows that Ubuntu can see a device; it does not prove that the print queue or the path that converts a document into printer-ready output is working.
1. Check the printer and its queue first
Start with the printer itself: make sure it is powered on and connected, and check its display or indicator lights for paper, cover, or offline warnings. Ubuntu’s printer setup guide recommends checking power and connection before proceeding.
Next, inspect the queue before changing drivers or settings:
- Open Activities and search for Printers.
- Open the settings for the affected printer and view its job list.
- If a job is paused or stuck, use its stop or cancel control. If the software cannot cancel it, try the printer’s physical cancel control.
A paused or blocked job can prevent later jobs from printing. Ubuntu describes these queue checks in its stuck print jobs guidance.

2. Confirm Ubuntu is sending the job to the right printer
In the application’s print dialog, check the selected printer each time you print. If you have more than one printer, the application may use the system default unless you choose another destination. To check or change the default, open Printers in Settings and review the printer selection. The application’s choice and the system default are separate things to verify; Ubuntu explains defaults in its printer setup instructions.
3. Check the connection path
USB printer
- Confirm the printer is on.
- Check that the USB cable is firmly connected at both ends; if possible, try another port or cable to rule out a connection fault.
Ubuntu’s setup guide covers connection checks, but the specific cable or port cannot be identified as the cause without testing.

Network printer
- Confirm the printer is on the same reachable network as the Ubuntu computer and is not reporting an offline state.
- Open Printers in Settings and add the printer if necessary.
- If automatic discovery does not find it, Ubuntu allows you to enter a known network address manually.
Use the address assigned to your printer or supplied by your network administrator; do not guess one. See Ubuntu’s instructions for adding a printer.
4. Check the selected driver and print processing
A printer can appear in Ubuntu even when the driver needed to print is missing or incorrect. Ubuntu notes that some drivers may also be incomplete, so a device’s presence alone does not establish that its driver path works. Check which model and driver are selected in the printer’s settings, and use a driver intended for the exact printer model and compatible with your Ubuntu release. Do not install a package for a merely similar model. Ubuntu’s driver guidance explains that manual installation may be necessary.

Printing also depends on CUPS, the service that manages print queues and processing. Its drivers and filters convert application output into a format the printer can understand. An error in that path can stop printing even if the device is detected. The Ubuntu CUPS manpage describes CUPS as the software used to print from applications such as word processors and web browsers.
5. Use CUPS logs when the basic checks do not explain the failure
If the queue, destination, connection, and driver look correct, inspect CUPS’s error log at /var/log/cups/error_log. Ubuntu’s CUPS server documentation identifies this log as a place to investigate printing problems.

The default CUPS log level is info. If it does not show enough detail, Ubuntu documents temporarily changing the CUPS LogLevel setting to debug or debug2, then returning it to normal when troubleshooting is complete. More detailed logging can help expose processing errors, but it can also make logs grow unnecessarily if left enabled. Follow the instructions for your installed Ubuntu release in the server documentation rather than assuming every release uses identical configuration steps.
6. Gather details before seeking a model-specific fix
If printing still fails, collect the details that determine which repair is appropriate:

- Printer make and exact model
- Ubuntu version
- USB or network connection type
- Printer and queue status, including any visible error
- The relevant message from
/var/log/cups/error_log
Those details help distinguish a connection or queue problem from a driver or CUPS processing failure. Without them, a particular vendor package, replacement cable, repair part, or paid service cannot be recommended reliably. Ubuntu interface labels and driver availability can vary by release, so check guidance against the version installed on your computer.
