IT security protects the accounts, files, devices, and daily work you rely on. Its value is not limited to stopping hackers: good security also reduces the harm of stolen credentials, malware, lost devices, and ransomware—and makes recovery more likely when prevention fails.
1. It protects data you cannot replace
Photos, documents, work files, and account records may be valuable even when they have no resale value. An attacker who accesses an unencrypted device may read or alter its data, steal it, or prevent you from accessing it. CISA explains these risks in How to Protect the Data that is Stored on Your Devices.
Encryption helps keep stored information unreadable to someone who gets the device or storage medium without the appropriate key. CISA recommends encrypting computers, mobile devices, hard drives, removable media, and relevant files. Encryption is not a substitute for a backup: if a device fails or files are damaged, an encrypted copy of the same lost data will not restore them.
Pair encryption with a backup
Keep a separate copy of important data on a secure external hard drive or a properly vetted cloud service, as CISA recommends. Protect backup accounts with strong authentication, and handle encryption or recovery keys carefully: a backup you cannot unlock is not a usable recovery plan.

2. It makes account takeover harder
A password can be exposed through phishing, reused-password breaches, or malware. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) adds another check beyond the password, making a stolen password less likely to be enough on its own. NIST’s small-business MFA guidance recommends requiring employees to use MFA wherever it is offered, especially phishing-resistant MFA.
Use stronger authentication where it matters most
- Turn on MFA for email, financial, cloud-storage, and administrator accounts first; these can provide access to other services or sensitive information.
- Where available, choose a phishing-resistant option, such as a hardware security key, rather than relying only on a code that can be entered into a fake sign-in page.
- Use a password manager to create and store unique, strong passwords instead of reusing one password across services. Keep its own account protected with MFA.
MFA reduces risk; it does not make an account invulnerable. Keep recovery methods secure, and review them when you change phones or lose a security key.

- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
3. It closes common routes used by attackers
Security is not only about sophisticated attacks. Criminals can exploit weak or stolen credentials and known software vulnerabilities. Verizon Business’s 2025 Data Breach Investigations Report analyzed more than 22,000 security incidents, including 12,195 confirmed breaches. In its analysis of leading initial attack vectors, credential abuse accounted for 22% and vulnerability exploitation for 20% (Verizon 2025 DBIR). These are findings from that report, not a prediction that any particular person or organization will experience a breach.
Match controls to the route they address
| Control | What it helps protect | What it does—and does not—do |
|---|---|---|
| MFA, preferably phishing-resistant | Accounts | Makes stolen passwords less useful; does not prevent every form of account compromise. |
| Timely software updates and patches | Devices and applications | Fix known security weaknesses attackers may exploit; does not remove every threat. |
| Antivirus and a firewall | Devices and network traffic | Help identify or block some malicious activity; require updates and are not guarantees against malware. |
| Encryption | Stored data | Helps keep data confidential if storage is accessed without authorization; does not restore lost or damaged files. |
| Secure backups | Data and operations | Provide a way to restore files after loss or damage; their value depends on separation, security, and being usable. |
CISA recommends maintaining antivirus and a firewall, scanning regularly for spyware, and installing software patches. The measures complement one another: patching addresses known flaws, while antivirus and firewalls support prevention and detection.

4. It helps life and work recover after a bad event
Security cannot guarantee that a device will never be lost, fail, or be infected. A secure backup can turn a potentially permanent loss into a recovery task. CISA recommends backing up to a secure external hard drive or properly vetted cloud service; the right choice depends on the data, devices, and services you use.
Make recovery practical
- Back up important files regularly, rather than relying on a single copy stored on the device you use every day.
- Keep backup access protected, and consider whether the backup could be reached by malware affecting your main device.
- Know how you would restore files and access recovery keys before an emergency. An untested or inaccessible backup may not help when time matters.
For organizations, preparation also includes deciding who responds, how incidents are handled, and how services are restored. NIST’s SP 800-61 Rev. 3, published in April 2025, integrates incident-response recommendations with the Cybersecurity Framework 2.0 to support preparation, response, and recovery. Its organizational guidance illustrates a broader point for individuals too: recovery is easier when the steps are considered before a crisis.

- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
5. It turns vague fear into manageable habits
Cybersecurity can feel like an endless list of threats. NIST describes it simply: “Cybersecurity is a continuous process.” That means security is better treated as a set of habits that are maintained—not as a one-time purchase or setup that ends all risk.
A practical order for getting started
- Protect accounts: enable MFA, prioritizing email and other accounts that can reset passwords or expose valuable data. Use unique passwords and a password manager.
- Keep devices current: install operating-system and application updates promptly, and maintain antivirus and firewall protections.
- Protect and copy important data: encrypt supported devices and storage, then maintain a separate, secure backup.
- Plan for recovery: know where recovery keys and account recovery options are kept, and how to restore essential files.
- Review as things change: revisit access and backups when you replace a device, change accounts, or add important data.
For a small business, these basics can be part of a wider risk-management approach. NIST’s guidance also points to stronger measures such as phishing-resistant MFA, software-supply-chain security, incident-response playbooks, and improved detection. The appropriate level depends on what the organization handles and the consequences of disruption.
