There’s no required order: start with Fallen London for free, text-led stories, or Sunless Sea for a standalone ship-exploration and survival game. Both are set in the same dark Victorian-Gothic universe, and Failbetter Games says you do not need to play Fallen London to enjoy Sunless Sea.

How the two games differ

Game Format and focus Access
Fallen London A browser-based, text adventure in which choices shape your character’s fortunes in an underground London. Failbetter says its story content comprises 4.5 million handcrafted words; that is the developer’s figure, not an independently audited count. Free browser play on desktop or mobile, according to Failbetter Games.
Sunless Sea A standalone game about taking a steamship into the unknown. Its focus is exploration, storytelling, and survival, with discovery, loneliness, and frequent death among its defining features. Paid digital game on Steam; prices and promotions vary by time and region.

The games share a setting, but not a central activity: Fallen London is built around reading and making choices, while Sunless Sea asks you to navigate and survive at sea. Fallen London released in 2009; Steam lists Sunless Sea as released on February 6, 2015. That release order is not a required play order.

Which one should you start with?

Choose Fallen London for text and city stories

Start with Fallen London if you want to sample the world without paying for the game, or if you prefer a text-first experience centered on choices and stories in the city. Failbetter describes it as free and browser-based, with access on desktop or mobile.

Choose Sunless Sea for sailing and survival

Start with Sunless Sea if you want a distinct game loop based on steering a ship, exploring unfamiliar waters, and facing survival pressure. Failbetter emphasizes frequent death as part of the experience; Steam classifies it as a Gothic Horror RPG with exploration and storytelling. Its paid status and current price are separate considerations: check the live storefront for the price and availability in your region.

Choose by format if you have no strong preference

If you are simply wondering whether the world requires a lore-first introduction, choose whichever format appeals to you. Failbetter’s original Sunless Sea FAQ says prior play of Fallen London is emphatically not necessary, though familiarity with the setting can add to the experience.

What carries over between the games?

Think of the connection as shared setting and potential added context, not a direct character-transfer system. The 2013 FAQ said characters would not transfer directly, while some non-core choices and stories could carry across. That FAQ describes the games’ intended narrative relationship; it is not a current guide to account or platform mechanics.

For a sense of one design trade-off in Sunless Sea, creative director and lead writer Alexis Kennedy wrote in a 2015 postmortem, “The real-time combat wasn’t nearly as polished as if we’d done it from the beginning.” He described the team’s later effort to connect combat more closely with survival, resource management, ocean layout, and hazards. That is a specific retrospective on development, not a blanket judgment of the game.

Check platform availability before buying

Fallen London is described by Failbetter as playable in a browser on desktop or mobile. For Sunless Sea, use the store listing for the platform and region where you plan to play: live prices, promotions, and availability can change. Failbetter’s April 2020 console announcement documents releases announced at that time, including Switch and Xbox One, and noted that the Zubmariner Edition was then available on PS4 and the game on iPad; it should not be treated as a current compatibility list.
