The fastest Chromebook screenshot shortcut is Ctrl + Show windows (the key showing a rectangle with two lines). For a selected area or a window, press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows to open Screen Capture, then choose the capture mode. Screenshots are copied to the clipboard and saved in Downloads by default.

Labels and available controls can vary with your Chromebook model, keyboard layout, ChromeOS version, and administrator policy. Google’s keyboard-shortcuts page is written for US standard English QWERTY keyboards; international layouts can place keys differently.
Take a full-screen screenshot
- Display the content you want to capture.
- Press Ctrl + Show windows.
- Wait for the capture confirmation. The image is copied to your clipboard and saved in Downloads unless you have changed the destination.
The Show windows key is usually on the top row and has a rectangle icon with two vertical lines. On a Windows external keyboard, use the Windows key in place of Search where Search is required. On a Mac keyboard, use Command in place of Search or Launcher.
Capture part of the screen
- Press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows.
- When the selection tool appears, click and drag around the area you need.
- Release the mouse or trackpad button. ChromeOS captures the selected rectangle.
This method is useful for a single chart, dialog, message, or portion of a web page. Make the selection slightly larger than the target if text is close to the edge; you can crop it later in an image editor.

Use the Screen Capture toolbar
The toolbar provides capture modes and settings that the one-key shortcut does not. Open it with Shift + Ctrl + Show windows, or open the system tray by selecting the time, then choose Screen Capture. If your Chromebook has a dedicated Screenshot key, pressing it opens the same capture flow.
Choose a capture scope
- Full screen: captures every visible display.
- Partial screen: lets you click and drag a rectangle.
- Window: captures one application window without manually selecting its borders.
Change where files are saved
In Screen Capture settings, select the folder or location you want to use instead of Downloads. The setting applies to subsequent screenshots and recordings. Confirm the location before a large capture session so files do not appear to be missing.
Clipboard behavior
ChromeOS automatically copies screenshots to the clipboard. Paste with Ctrl + V into an email, document, chat, or image editor. Clipboard copying is separate from the saved file, so pasting can work even when you have not yet located the downloaded image.
Screenshot a Chromebook tablet
- Press and hold Power + Volume down at the same time.
- Release both buttons when the capture animation or notification appears.
- Open the saved image from the notification or Files app.
Button placement and timing differ between tablet models. If the shortcut does not respond, use the on-screen Screen Capture menu from the system time area.

Use a stylus or touchscreen controls
With a compatible touchscreen stylus, open the stylus menu and choose Capture region or Capture screen. Choose region when you need a defined rectangle and screen for the entire display. A managed Chromebook may hide or restrict stylus commands through administrator policy.
Record the screen instead of taking a still
Open Screen Capture with Shift + Ctrl + Show windows, then switch from the camera icon to the recording option. You can record the full screen, a selected region, or a window. Depending on the ChromeOS build and device, recording settings can include the front camera, device audio, microphone, both audio sources, and indicators for clicks and key combinations.
Partial recordings can be saved as .webm video or .gif. GIF recordings do not include audio or video input. To finish, select Stop recording or press Search + Shift + X. Recordings use the selected Screen Capture save location.
Find, rename, and share your screenshots
- Open the Files app from the Launcher.
- Select Downloads, or the custom folder chosen in Screen Capture settings.
- Open the image to preview it, or right-click it to rename, move, copy, or share it.
Use the notification that appears immediately after capture when you need to open or edit the file quickly. If you only need to insert the image somewhere, paste from the clipboard instead of opening Files.

When the shortcut does not work
The Show windows key is missing
Some external keyboards omit the Chromebook key. Try Ctrl + Shift + F5 to open capture controls, or use the system tray’s Screen Capture command. On a Windows keyboard, use the Windows key in the equivalent Search-based shortcuts; on a Mac keyboard, use Command for Search or Launcher.
Nothing happens after pressing the keys
- Press the keys together rather than sequentially.
- Check whether an administrator has disabled screenshots or recordings.
- Try the Screen Capture menu from the system time area.
- Disconnect an external keyboard and test the built-in keys to identify a layout or hardware problem.
The image is not in Downloads
Open Screen Capture settings and check the selected folder. A previous user, policy, or ChromeOS update may have changed the destination. Search the Files app for recently modified image files.
The capture is blank or incomplete
Repeat the capture after the page finishes loading. For a video or protected application, ChromeOS or the application may prevent screen capture. Try capturing a visible browser window rather than an embedded protected surface, and check whether hardware acceleration or an administrator policy is involved.
The recording has no sound
Before starting, open recording settings and select device audio, microphone, or both. A GIF cannot contain audio, so choose WebM when sound is required. Verify the microphone permission and the correct input device in ChromeOS settings.

The selection box is difficult to draw
Increase the browser zoom or display scale only if it helps you place the edges; otherwise leave the scale unchanged and crop the saved image afterward. A window capture is often cleaner than a tight manual rectangle.

Can I take a screenshot without saving a file?
The capture is automatically copied to the clipboard, so you can paste it with Ctrl + V. ChromeOS also saves a file unless your device or policy changes that behavior.

The built-in capture saves an image file in the location selected in Screen Capture settings; the exact format can depend on the ChromeOS implementation and capture flow.
Can I capture only one browser tab?
