No. NASA’s “Send Your Name to Mars” sign-up is over: submissions closed on September 30, 2019. If you submitted a name, NASA says it is aboard the Perseverance rover on one of three silicon chips. The campaign did not send people to Mars; it etched names onto the spacecraft as a public-engagement keepsake.

Can you still add your name to the Mars rover?

No. NASA’s campaign opened on May 21, 2019, and closed on September 30, 2019. There is no current submission window for adding a name through that campaign. NASA’s deadline announcement described the rover’s launch and landing dates as future plans in 2019; those dates were projections at the time, not current forecasts. Did submitted names actually go to Mars?

Yes. On March 26, 2020, NASA reported that 10,932,295 names had been etched onto three fingernail-sized silicon chips and installed on Perseverance. The chips were mounted beneath a glass cover on the rover. The total included names submitted through the campaign and essays from 155 finalists in NASA’s “Name the Rover” contest. NASA’s account of the names installed on the rover

How did NASA put names on Perseverance?

NASA used an electron beam to write the names in lines about 75 nanometers wide. The agency said more than one million names could fit on a dime-size chip. Three chips were used for the names carried by Perseverance; this was a compact inscription on the rover, not a physical trip for participants. NASA’s explanation of the name chips

Where is the Mars 2020 boarding pass?

People who submitted a name could receive a souvenir boarding pass and digital “frequent flyer” points. The pass was a digital campaign keepsake, not a travel ticket or proof of a person’s presence on Mars. If you are looking for a pass from your own submission, NASA’s campaign page is the relevant starting point; the available campaign information does not establish a separate current replacement or reprint service. Why did NASA invite the public to send names?

The name campaign accompanied the Mars 2020 science mission, which NASA later named Perseverance. The rover was designed to search for signs of past microbial life, study Mars’ climate and geology, collect samples for possible future return to Earth, and help prepare for human exploration. The name chip was a public-engagement feature of that mission, not a paid service or a promise of personal travel to Mars. NASA associate administrator Thomas Zurbuchen said, “As we get ready to launch this historic Mars mission, we want everyone to share in this journey of exploration.” NASA’s campaign announcement
