Yes—ffmpeg media conversion, OCR, and many PDF operations can run entirely inside a browser tab without sending the selected file to a processing server. The page downloads JavaScript and WebAssembly, reads your file into local browser memory, performs the work on your device, and offers the result as a download.
That is not the same as “the browser makes no network requests.” The page, scripts, language models, analytics, hosting, and security services may still contact the internet. Treat zero-upload as a processing claim, then verify the actual requests and understand what each tool does to your output.
What “zero upload” means in practice
A local-first file tool moves the computational step from a remote backend to your own browser. After the page loads, its JavaScript and WebAssembly modules can read a file selected through the file picker, transform the bytes in memory, and create a new file for download. The source file does not need to leave the device for that processing path.

The same service describes a browser PDF reader/writer, an OCR engine, and a video-and-audio transcoder. It says those tools can continue working after you disconnect once the page and required assets have loaded.

Open-source browser projects show the same architecture. The omne project identifies @ffmpeg/ffmpeg for media, pdfjs-dist for PDF handling, and tesseract.js for OCR. BrowserSnip documents local video trimming, PDF operations, and OCR through WebAssembly. Other browser-tool directories list ffmpeg.wasm media functions and PDF actions such as merging, splitting, OCR, redaction, and signing.
“Zero upload” therefore answers one narrow question: whether the document, image, audio, or video bytes are sent to a processing backend. It does not promise that the webpage has no telemetry, hosting traffic, model downloads, or other requests.
How browser-local processing works
- Asset loading: Your browser downloads the application code, WebAssembly modules, and any required fonts or language models. OCR may require a separate model such as an English or French Tesseract.js package.
- File selection: The file picker grants the page temporary access to the item you choose. A normal webpage cannot silently browse the rest of your disk.
- In-memory work: JavaScript coordinates the operation while WebAssembly performs computationally intensive decoding, encoding, PDF parsing, or OCR.
- Local output: The page assembles a new file in browser memory and invokes a download. You choose where that result is saved.
- Cleanup: Closing the tab normally releases the in-memory copy, but files you downloaded, browser cache entries, crash reports, and operating-system backups follow your device’s own retention rules.
Large video files, high-resolution scans, and image-heavy PDFs can consume substantial RAM because the browser may hold input, decoded pages, intermediate data, and output simultaneously. There is no universal maximum size or speed: the practical limit depends on the browser, device memory, CPU, storage pressure, and the particular build.
How private is a zero-upload tool?
A local processing promise reduces exposure to a vendor’s conversion server, but it is not an anonymity guarantee. Filetools.co discloses Google Analytics, Cloudflare, and ordinary hosting traffic while stating that file names, file contents, and files are not included in analytics events. That distinction is important: metadata about visiting a page can exist even when the selected document is not transmitted.

Pages can also fetch code after the first visit, download OCR language data, check for updates, or contact a content-delivery network. A tool may be local for the transformation while still using remote services for the application shell. If policy requires a strict air gap, load and audit the page on a controlled network, then disconnect before selecting sensitive files.
Verify requests with browser developer tools
- Open the tool in a current desktop browser.
- Open Developer Tools (usually F12 or Ctrl+Shift+I/Cmd+Option+I) and select the Network tab.
- Enable the option to preserve the log, clear existing entries, and filter by Fetch/XHR as well as Other so WebAssembly and model downloads are visible.
- Select a non-sensitive test file and run the operation.
- Inspect requests created during processing. A request containing the document, its pages, a base64 payload, or a multipart upload indicates server transfer and contradicts a strict zero-upload interpretation.
- Repeat with the browser offline after the page and language assets have loaded. If the operation still completes, the core transformation is likely cached locally; record that result for your own threat model.
The omne project specifically recommends checking the DevTools Network panel for zero outbound requests while processing. This is a useful verification technique, not a permanent guarantee: a later version of the page can change its behavior, and your browser may still make unrelated network calls.
Running ffmpeg in a browser
Browser ffmpeg builds, commonly delivered as ffmpeg.wasm or through @ffmpeg/ffmpeg, can trim or transcode audio and video without uploading the source. The browser reads the selected media, invokes the WebAssembly build, and produces a new local file.

Typical local workflow
- Open a browser ffmpeg tool and wait for its scripts and codec assets to finish loading.
- Choose the source video or audio file. Keep the original in a separate location because an in-browser conversion cannot restore quality lost by re-encoding.
- Select the operation—such as trimming, extracting audio, changing a container, or transcoding—and specify the output format and time range.
- Start the job and keep the tab active. Decoding and encoding use your device’s CPU; very large jobs can make the page appear unresponsive.
- Download the result, then verify duration, audio tracks, subtitles, frame rate, and synchronization in a local media player.
Exact codec choices, bitrate controls, hardware acceleration, and maximum input size vary by build. The available material does not establish a universal speed, quality score, or file-size ceiling, so do not treat a displayed progress bar as a benchmark between tools.

When local ffmpeg is a good fit
- Short clips, voice recordings, and routine format changes where keeping the source on-device matters.
- Travel or field work after the page and codec assets have been cached.
- Environments where uploading media is prohibited but a modern browser is allowed.
For long 4K footage, multi-pass encoding, or batch pipelines, a native ffmpeg installation usually provides more predictable memory use, scripting, and recovery. Browser ffmpeg is convenient, but the tab and its memory budget remain part of the execution environment.
Private OCR for images and scanned PDFs
OCR engines such as Tesseract.js can recognize text locally from an image or scanned page. The omne documentation names Tesseract.js and English and French models. A browser OCR tool may rasterize each PDF page, pass the image through the language model, and place recognized text into a searchable PDF or a text download.
OCR procedure
- Keep an untouched copy of the scan. OCR creates an interpretation; it does not improve the pixels in the source.
- Choose the correct language model before starting. A mismatched language can lower recognition quality, especially for accented characters and unusual spelling.
- Set page range, resolution, orientation correction, and layout options when the tool exposes them.
- Run OCR locally and wait for every page to finish. Multi-page scans can require considerable memory.
- Search the output for names, numbers, dates, and table values. Compare high-risk passages against the original image at high zoom.
- Save the searchable copy under a new filename so the original scan remains available for verification.
Filetools.co states the limitation plainly: “OCR misreads a bad scan.” Blur, skew, stains, low contrast, handwriting, unusual fonts, and two-column layouts can all produce errors. OCR text should not be treated as authoritative for legal, medical, financial, or identity records until a person checks it against the page image.

Browser PDF stacks can read and write documents, but feature depth differs by implementation. Depending on the tool, you may be able to merge or split files, reorder pages, rotate pages, annotate, sign, fill forms, add OCR text, or redact content. A “complete PDF reader and writer” claim does not mean every browser editor supports every PDF feature, font, attachment, or form field.

Safe local PDF-editing workflow
- Duplicate the source PDF before editing. Store the original in a protected folder and work on the copy.
- Import the copy and confirm page count, orientation, embedded forms, and attachments before making changes.
- Apply page operations or annotations, then export to a new file.
- Open the exported file in a second PDF reader. Check links, bookmarks, selectable text, signatures, form values, and page order.
- For OCR output, search several pages and compare text with the scan.
- For redaction, test whether the hidden text can still be selected, copied, searched, or extracted after saving.
Visual covering is not reliable redaction
A black rectangle or white shape placed over text can leave the original characters in the PDF’s content stream. True redaction must remove or permanently rasterize the underlying content and should survive copy, search, text extraction, and reopening in another viewer. If a tool only draws an annotation, do not use it for confidential disclosure. When the editor does not explain how redaction is enforced, treat the feature as visual markup rather than proven removal.
Filetools.co also warns that rasterizing a page to compress it “destroys its selectable text.” Rasterization can be useful for a deliberate flattened copy, but it changes searchability, accessibility, and downstream editing. Keep the original and label the flattened output clearly.
Offline operation: what must happen first
Offline use is conditional. The page, WebAssembly modules, codecs, PDF libraries, and OCR language assets must load before the network is disconnected. A vendor may say its tools continue working after disconnecting, but that is a product claim rather than an independent performance benchmark.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
To prepare for offline work, open the exact tool while connected, load every language or codec you need, run a harmless test file, and then disable Wi-Fi or unplug Ethernet. If the page asks for a model download after disconnection, that model was not cached. Private browsing, cleared site data, service-worker updates, and browser storage quotas can also remove assets you expected to be available.

Comparing browser-local file tools
| Decision axis | What to check | Evidence or limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Processing location | Does the selected file remain in the tab, or is it posted to an API? | Local processing is described by filetools.co; verify the Network panel yourself. |
| Media coverage | Supported containers, codecs, trimming precision, and audio/video controls | Browser ffmpeg builds support transcoding or trimming; exact codec matrix is build-specific and not stated. |
| OCR coverage | Language models, layout handling, searchable output, and correction tools | omne documents Tesseract.js with English and French models; accuracy varies with scan quality. |
| PDF depth | Merge, split, annotation, forms, signatures, OCR, and true redaction | Directories list these operations, but support differs by implementation; redaction behavior must be tested. |
| Offline behavior | Whether all required assets remain usable after disconnecting | Several vendors claim continued operation after loading; no independent benchmark establishes this universally. |
| Data disclosures | Analytics, hosting, model downloads, retention, and account requirements | Filetools.co discloses analytics and Cloudflare traffic while excluding file contents from analytics events. |
| Output integrity | Whether text remains selectable and whether removed content is actually gone | Rasterization destroys selectable text; OCR and redaction require independent inspection. |
Requirements and practical limits
- Browser: Use a current desktop browser with WebAssembly enabled. Older browsers may lack required APIs or impose smaller memory limits.
- Memory: Leave headroom for decoded video frames, full-page PDF rasters, OCR data, and output buffers. Close unrelated tabs for large jobs.
- Storage: Keep enough local disk space for the original, temporary browser data, and exported result.
- Permissions: The page needs access only to files you explicitly select; camera, microphone, or broader storage permissions are not inherent to local conversion.
- Backups: Preserve originals before OCR, rasterization, compression, redaction, or re-encoding.
There is no evidence for a universal processing speed, OCR accuracy percentage, or maximum file size. Any claim that one browser tool is “fastest” or handles a fixed number of gigabytes should be understood as a test of a particular device, browser version, file, and build—not a general property of local processing.
Troubleshooting common failures
The page stalls or the tab crashes
Close other tabs, split a large PDF into smaller ranges, lower video resolution before processing, or use a native desktop utility. Restarting the browser can release memory held by a failed WebAssembly job.
OCR output is incomplete or nonsensical
Check language selection, rotate and improve contrast in a copy, process fewer pages at once, and proofread against the image. Bad scans remain bad inputs; changing tools cannot guarantee correct recognition.
The offline test fails
Reconnect, reload the page, explicitly download the required language or codec assets, and repeat the test before disconnecting. Clearing site data or using a private window may have removed cached modules.
A PDF looks redacted but text can be copied
Discard that export for sensitive use. Return to the original, use a redaction function that removes underlying objects, save a new copy, and test selection, search, and text extraction in a separate viewer.
A converted video has missing audio or subtitles
Inspect the source streams and output settings, choose a container that supports the required tracks, and verify the downloaded file locally. Browser builds may omit codecs or advanced stream options even when a format appears in the interface.
A cautious workflow for sensitive files
- Classify the file and decide whether browser processing is permitted by your organization or regulator.
- Use a clean, updated browser profile and avoid unrelated extensions that can inspect page content.
- Load the tool and all required assets before disconnecting if offline operation is part of the requirement.
- Check the Network panel during a harmless test and again during the real operation.
- Work from a copy, export to a new filename, and validate the result in another viewer or player.
- Delete temporary copies and browser downloads according to your retention policy, while preserving any required original and audit record.
Browser-local ffmpeg, OCR, and PDF tools are practical when the main requirement is keeping file bytes off a processing server. Their privacy advantage is meaningful but bounded: the webpage can still have network activity, and the quality and capacity of local processing depend on the device and implementation. Verify network behavior, preserve originals, and inspect every sensitive output before relying on it.
