The best way to manage blocked users is to match the control to the problem: block an individual to stop personal contact, mute to remove someone from your view without escalating, report rule-breaking, ban a community member, or use filters and permissions to prevent risky interactions. Reddit, X and Discord each expose different lists, exceptions and recovery options, so there is no universal blocked-users manager.
Choose the control by the job you need done
“Blocked” can describe several different outcomes. Before changing a setting, decide whether you are protecting one account, reducing what you see, enforcing community rules or preventing a class of users from reaching you. The distinction matters because a personal block is not the same as a moderator ban, and a mute is not a report.

A practical rule is to use the least disruptive control that solves the problem. Mute for unwanted noise, block for a personal boundary, report for suspected rule violations, and ban only when community participation must be stopped. Combining controls is sometimes appropriate: a moderator may ban a user from a community and separately block or disable chat requests to prevent direct contact.
Reddit: keep personal blocking separate from community enforcement
Personal blocking
Reddit’s blocking feature is an account-level contact and visibility control. You can start it from a user profile or from account settings; menu labels can vary by app version. The current limit is 1,000 blocked accounts, a Reddit Help Center figure updated October 5, 2026.

After you block someone, the blocked person generally cannot access your profile, while you no longer see that person’s profile or feed content. Reddit still lets you expand certain hidden content when you need to review or report it. Replies, votes, awards and messages between the accounts are restricted in normal circumstances.
There are important exceptions. Existing shared group chats can remain available, and moderators retain specified abilities in communities they moderate. Blocking therefore should not be treated as a guarantee that every possible encounter disappears. If a moderator needs to act on a community member, use the community’s moderation tools rather than relying on a personal block.
Community bans and mod-mail mutes
A subreddit moderator can issue a temporary or permanent community ban. When creating the action, moderators can provide a rule-based reason, a user-facing explanation and a moderator-only note. The action can later be edited or removed. A ban should identify the rule and, where appropriate, explain how to appeal; Reddit’s moderator guidance recommends clear rules, sparing enforcement and an appeal path.
Mod-mail mutes solve a narrower problem: they stop a user from contacting the moderation team for a period without removing the user from the community. Reddit’s moderation overview describes a general mute of 72 hours, with longer durations available through mod mail. Record why the mute was applied and when it expires so another moderator can understand the decision.
A profile ban alone does not prevent a user from contacting you directly. Reddit documents blocking or turning off chat requests as separate controls, so use one of those when personal contact is the concern.

Reviewable moderation tools
For a team, Reddit’s moderation overview lists a mod queue, mod mail, automations and a log of moderator and administrator actions from the previous 90 days. Use the log to audit who applied, changed or removed an action. Keep notes factual: identify the rule, link the relevant content inside your normal moderation records and avoid speculative labels about a person.
Reddit also provides optional Safety Filters for suspected ban evasion, reputation concerns, harassment and other content or user risks. Ban-evasion filtering can be tuned by timeframe and confidence. The harassment filter is described as using a model trained on moderator actions and content removed by Reddit’s internal tools and enforcement teams. Treat these filters as triage rather than automatic proof: inspect borderline cases and adjust thresholds when legitimate users are caught.

Mute when visibility is the problem
X’s mute feature removes an account’s posts or other activity from your view without notifying that account. X states that a muted account has no way to tell it is muted. This is useful when you want a quieter timeline but do not need to stop the person from viewing or attempting ordinary interaction.
Block when contact and engagement must be limited
Blocking on X is more restrictive: it limits following, direct messages and engagement. A blocked account may discover the block when visiting your profile or trying to follow you. If your account is not protected, the blocked account can still see your posts, so blocking is not equivalent to hiding public content. Protecting the account changes who can view posts, but it is a separate privacy decision.
Use reporting as a separate step when an account or post may violate X Rules. A block changes your relationship with that account; a report asks X to assess potentially prohibited behavior. If both concerns exist, apply the personal control and submit the report rather than assuming one replaces the other.

Maintain the block list without obsolete CSV steps
The current X Help guidance says you can view blocked accounts on X.com and in the iOS and Android apps. Older tutorials may instruct you to import or export a blocked-account CSV through X.com; X says that feature is no longer available. You can still view and export the list through account-data tools in settings, subject to the options shown for your account.

Exported account data is useful for a personal record, but do not assume it can be uploaded back as a bulk list.
Discord: block people and tighten friend-request permissions
Where to block
Discord supports blocking from several starting points: a member list, a user profile, your friends list or a direct-message conversation. The exact context menu can differ between desktop, mobile and a server view, so look for the user action menu attached to the person’s name rather than relying on one fixed sequence of clicks.
Blocking an individual is appropriate when one account is the problem. If the issue is unwanted requests from many unfamiliar users, changing friend-request permissions is more efficient than building a long block list.
Limit who can send friend requests
Discord’s friend-request settings let you allow requests from friends of friends, server members or nobody. You can disable all eligible options to stop incoming friend requests entirely. This is a preventive control: it reduces the number of contacts that reach you before a block is needed, while still allowing you to participate in servers and direct messages according to your other privacy settings.

Use the narrowest setting compatible with how you use Discord. Someone who joins several public servers may want to disable server-member requests but keep friends-of-friends enabled; a private account may prefer to disable every category.

The comparison shows why feature-count rankings are misleading. Reddit’s personal block, X’s mute and Discord’s friend-request controls solve different problems even though each may appear under a privacy or safety menu.
A repeatable process for managing a growing block list
- Define the outcome. Write down whether you need invisibility in your own feed, an end to direct contact, removal from a community or a report for rule-breaking.
- Apply the least disruptive control. Start with mute or a permission change when you only need to reduce exposure. Use a block when contact itself is unwanted.
- Escalate with evidence. Report content that may violate platform rules. For a community, apply a temporary ban while investigating when a permanent decision is not yet justified.
- Document moderation decisions. State the rule, duration, user-facing reason and any appeal route. Keep moderator-only notes factual and relevant.
- Review exceptions. Check shared chats, moderator roles, public-post visibility and other contexts where a block may not fully remove contact.
- Audit periodically. Review the block list and moderation records, remove obsolete actions and check filters for false positives. On Reddit, the Mod Log provides a 90-day window for this audit.
Pitfalls and fixes
Assuming a block hides every public post
On X, a blocked account can still see posts when the blocker’s account is public. If the goal is confidential posting, review account-protection settings separately.
Using a personal block as a moderator action
A personal block does not document a community rule or remove someone from a subreddit. Use a temporary or permanent community ban, include the reason and provide an appeal route when appropriate.

Expecting an old export method to work
X no longer offers the former block-list CSV import/export feature through X.com. Use the current blocked-account view or account-data export instead, and do not follow guides that promise bulk CSV re-import.

Relying on filters without reviewing edge cases
Safety and harassment filters are risk-screening tools, not final judgments. Inspect borderline content, tune confidence or timeframe settings where available and give legitimate users a way to challenge an incorrect action.
Blocking when a report is necessary
Blocking protects your account but does not ask a platform to investigate harmful content. Submit a report when the behavior may violate the service’s rules, even if you also block the account.
Leaving contact permissions wide open
On Discord, a block list grows quickly if anyone in a shared server can send a request. Restrict friend requests to friends of friends, server members or nobody according to your risk tolerance.

Which setup fits your situation?
- Personal harassment or repeated unwanted messages: block the account, then report rule-breaking content; on Reddit, also review chat-request settings because a profile ban is not a personal-contact control.
- Annoying but non-violating posts: mute on X or use the platform’s equivalent feed control instead of escalating to a block.
- A subreddit or server with disruptive participation: apply a time-limited ban first when facts are still developing, document the rule and use a permanent ban only when the case warrants it.
- Many suspicious accounts: use Reddit’s Safety Filters or equivalent moderation automation, then review flagged cases rather than accepting every automated decision.
- Too many unsolicited Discord requests: change friend-request permissions before adding more individual blocks.
- Needing an auditable team process: centralize rule text, reasons, notes, appeal handling and periodic log reviews; do not rely on one moderator’s personal block list.
These choices keep personal safety, visibility, platform reporting and community governance distinct. That separation makes the controls easier to explain, reverse and audit when settings or interface labels change.
