For serious local CUDA development, choose the Lenovo ThinkPad P16 Gen 3 with the RTX PRO 4000 Blackwell configuration. The tested setup combines an Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX, 64GB of DDR5 memory and a 2TB Gen 5 SSD, making it the strongest performance-first option in this comparison for local training experiments, inference and GPU-accelerated engineering. Its large chassis, higher plugged-in power demand and reduced portability are the trade-offs.

If you need a thinner workstation, the Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 9 is the more portable choice, but its RTX PRO 2000 Blackwell configuration has 8GB of GDDR7 and is better suited to development, prototyping, smaller models and remote or cloud-assisted compute. If local model size is the priority, HP’s ZBook Fury G1i 16 can be configured with up to 24GB of dedicated GDDR7 and up to 128GB of system memory.

Which mobile workstation should you buy?

The three machines serve different CUDA workloads rather than competing on one simple performance scale. The P16 is the performance-first recommendation, the P1 is the portability-oriented development machine, and the ZBook Fury is the capacity-oriented option for workloads that are limited by video memory or system RAM.

Why VRAM is the first AI-development decision

Video memory determines how much of a model, batch, activation set or GPU-resident dataset can remain on the graphics processor. When it does not fit, a framework may reduce the batch size, move data to slower system memory or require quantization and other compromises. Those workarounds can keep a project running, but they change the engineering experience and may reduce throughput.

The practical tiers in these workstations are 8GB, 12GB, 16GB and 24GB. This is an engineering guideline based on the cited capacities, not a universal model-size chart: usable capacity depends on the framework, precision, quantization, context length, batch size, drivers and the rest of the workload.

VRAM tier What it generally enables Where it becomes restrictive
8GB CUDA learning, kernel development, prototyping, smaller models, inference experiments and remote-compute clients Larger local models, high batch sizes, long contexts and workloads that keep substantial datasets or activations on the GPU
12GB More comfortable experimentation than an 8GB card and moderate GPU-accelerated engineering Still constrained by memory-heavy training or multiple concurrent models
16GB More headroom for local inference, larger batches and development that would otherwise spill into system memory Very large models, unusually long contexts or several memory-intensive processes at once
24GB The most local-model headroom offered by the workstations in this comparison Extremely large models and workloads whose requirements exceed a single mobile GPU

Choose the smallest tier that comfortably fits your actual project only when portability and cost dominate. For a workstation intended to remain useful for several years, additional VRAM is difficult to add later, while memory pressure is one of the most disruptive limits in local AI work.

Lenovo ThinkPad P16 Gen 3: the performance-first choice

The ThinkPad P16 Gen 3 is the best starting point for a developer who wants to run substantial CUDA work locally instead of treating the laptop as a thin client. TechRadar’s 28 August 2026 review covered a configuration with an Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX, 64GB of DDR5, a 2TB Gen 5 SSD and an RTX PRO 4000 Blackwell. The review describes it as suitable for AI development and sustained demanding workloads.

That combination is balanced for a real development environment: the HX-class processor can handle compilation and CPU-side preprocessing, 64GB leaves room for containers, IDEs and datasets, and the 2TB drive gives local projects more working space than a small boot-only SSD. The RTX PRO 4000 Blackwell supplies the CUDA-capable GPU acceleration expected by this class of workstation.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

The display and connectivity are also unusually useful when the machine is used as a primary workstation. The reviewed P16 has a 16-inch panel covering 100% of the DCI-P3 color space, HDR 400 support and 800-nit brightness. It includes Wi-Fi 7 and two Thunderbolt 5 ports, which can simplify fast external storage, docking or high-bandwidth peripherals.

The same high-power design that supports sustained workloads makes the P16 less convenient to carry than an ordinary laptop. Expect the practical trade-off to show up in chassis size, fan noise and battery life when the GPU is busy. It is most sensible for a desk-based workflow, lab, classroom or mobile engineering role where performance while plugged in matters more than minimum weight.

TechRadar staff writer Bryan M. Wolfe wrote on 28 August 2026: “For engineering students, CAD professionals, and anyone working on 3D rendering and AI, this is easily the best mobile workstation we’ve tested for that.”

Choose the P16 when

  • You will run local inference, training experiments or GPU-accelerated engineering regularly.
  • The workstation will spend much of its time connected to AC power.
  • You need a large, fast local SSD and substantial system memory without moving every dataset to a server.
  • A brighter, wide-gamut display and two Thunderbolt 5 ports are useful to your workflow.

Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 9: the portable CUDA workstation

The ThinkPad P1 Gen 9 is the better fit when the machine must travel frequently between offices, classrooms or client sites. Lenovo’s specification lists an RTX PRO 2000 Blackwell Laptop GPU with 8GB of GDDR7. That capacity is adequate for CUDA development, prototyping, smaller models and applications that send heavier jobs to a remote workstation or cloud service.

Its role is different from the P16’s. An 8GB mobile GPU can be an excellent development target: you can write and profile CUDA code, validate data pipelines, test quantized models and prepare jobs for larger hardware. It becomes a poor match when the main goal is to keep a large model, long context or high batch entirely in local VRAM. In those cases, memory management becomes the project rather than an implementation detail.

  • You value a mobile CUDA environment more than maximum single-machine capacity.

HP ZBook Fury G1i 16: the VRAM and RAM specialist

The ZBook Fury G1i 16 is the option to investigate when capacity matters more than thinness. HP lists four relevant professional GPU choices: an RTX PRO 5000 Blackwell with 24GB of dedicated GDDR7, an RTX PRO 4000 with 16GB, an RTX PRO 3000 with 12GB and an RTX PRO 2000 with 8GB. The same platform is listed with up to 128GB of DDR5-5600 system memory.

The 24GB configuration is the most compelling choice here for local workloads that are constrained by GPU memory. The 16GB and 12GB versions provide intermediate steps if the 24GB model is unnecessary or unavailable. System RAM matters separately: it holds data loaders, containers, preprocessing jobs, virtual machines and applications that cannot remain in VRAM. A 128GB configuration is particularly useful when CPU-side preparation and multitasking are as demanding as the GPU task.

Because HP offers multiple processor, display, GPU and memory combinations, the name alone does not identify the machine you will receive. Confirm the exact GPU, VRAM, system-memory speed and storage configuration in the regional listing. Also compare the resulting price and weight with the P16 before treating the Fury as an automatic winner.

Choose the Fury when

  • Your local workflow is limited by VRAM more often than by portability.
  • You need up to 24GB of dedicated GPU memory in a conventional mobile workstation.
  • Large datasets, containers or CPU preprocessing make up to 128GB of system memory valuable.
  • You are willing to compare a specific regional configuration rather than buying by model family alone.

ThinkPad P16 versus P1 for machine learning

The decision is primarily a capacity-versus-portability choice. The P16’s reviewed configuration is designed to sustain demanding local work and includes more substantial CPU, memory and storage anchors. The P1’s cited GPU configuration is aimed at a lighter mobile role and is most effective when local development is paired with remote compute.

Question ThinkPad P16 Gen 3 ThinkPad P1 Gen 9
Primary role Local performance and sustained GPU work Portable development and prototyping
Best deployment pattern Run more of the experiment on the workstation itself Develop locally, then scale jobs remotely when needed
Memory concern More comfortable baseline in the reviewed configuration GPU memory is the first constraint in the cited configuration
Mobility Lower; the high-power design is heavier Higher among the cited workstation models
Buying risk Confirm the exact reviewed-style configuration and power behavior Confirm that 8GB VRAM matches your model and batch requirements

If you are asking “can I run CUDA on a workstation laptop?”, both are intended for NVIDIA CUDA development, provided the selected operating system, driver, CUDA Toolkit and framework versions are compatible. The P1 is not a failed P16; it is a deliberate choice to trade local headroom for easier travel.

System RAM and storage requirements

Use 64GB as a practical baseline

For containers, an IDE, data-loading processes and a local dataset, 64GB of system memory is a sensible starting point. It avoids forcing every supporting process into a narrow memory budget while still leaving room for normal desktop use. The P16 review configuration uses this amount.

Move to 128GB for heavy preprocessing

Up to 128GB, as listed for the Fury G1i 16, is useful when data preparation, multiple containers, virtual machines or CPU-side feature generation run alongside a GPU job. More system RAM does not increase the GPU’s VRAM, but it can prevent the rest of the pipeline from paging or competing with the training process.

Plan storage around the dataset

A 2TB Gen 5 SSD, as fitted to the reviewed P16, gives a local project more room for environments, checkpoints and datasets than a minimal system drive. When comparing other configurations, prefer two fast SSD slots or a large Gen 4 or Gen 5 drive if local datasets are central to the workflow. Check whether the listed capacity is one drive or an aggregate before purchase.

Cooling, power and portability trade-offs

HX-class processors and higher RTX PRO tiers can deliver more throughput, but they generally increase chassis size, cooling requirements, fan noise and plugged-in power demand. A thin design may be easier to carry, yet sustained GPU work can expose limits that are not obvious from a short burst of performance.

Think about where the workload runs. A workstation that spends most of the day compiling, rendering or training beside an outlet should be selected for sustained cooling and serviceability. A machine carried through meetings or used on battery should prioritize weight and acceptable performance at lower power. The P16 review explicitly characterizes its high-power design as less portable than ordinary laptops; do not evaluate it as though it were an ultralight notebook.

Battery-runtime claims are especially configuration- and workload-dependent. The evidence here does not establish a single runtime figure under CUDA load, so use the manufacturer’s exact regional specification and independent testing for the SKU you intend to buy rather than assuming that a larger battery offsets sustained GPU consumption.

CUDA compatibility checklist before ordering

NVIDIA’s CUDA documentation explains that compute capability defines the hardware features and supported instructions for each GPU architecture. A workstation can have a powerful GPU and still require project-specific version checks.

  1. Record the GPU exactly. Write down the RTX PRO model and Blackwell designation in the listing, not just the workstation family name.
  2. Check the project’s CUDA requirement. Confirm the CUDA Toolkit version expected by your framework, containers and compiled extensions.
  3. Check driver support. Match the installed NVIDIA driver to the Toolkit and framework combination required by the project.
  4. Confirm framework builds. Verify that your machine-learning framework and any custom CUDA extensions provide binaries for the selected compute capability.
  5. Budget for headroom. Compare the model’s memory use, batch size and context length with the GPU’s VRAM after allowing for framework overhead.
  6. Test the complete stack. Validate the driver, Toolkit, framework and representative workload together before committing to a large local dataset or long training run.

These checks are more reliable than choosing by a product name alone. GPU architecture, driver releases and framework support evolve independently, and the exact requirements of a project can be stricter than the workstation’s headline specification.

Buying and configuration pitfalls

Assuming every regional SKU is identical

Professional workstations are sold in many combinations. The Fury’s maximum GPU and memory are listed capabilities, not a promise that every retailer bundles them together. The P16 review configuration is also a specific tested setup. Compare the complete bill of materials, including GPU memory, system RAM, SSD generation and display.

Choosing VRAM by GPU name

“RTX PRO 4000” identifies a tier, but the usable capacity still depends on the exact laptop GPU configuration. Read the dedicated GDDR7 figure and account for the memory your framework reserves. Do not infer a 24GB capability from a workstation family that is configured with a lower tier.

Ignoring storage expansion

AI environments, checkpoints and datasets consume space quickly. A fast boot drive can become a bottleneck if the project must constantly move data to external storage. Check for a second SSD slot or select a larger Gen 4 or Gen 5 drive at purchase.

Buying for short benchmarks

Short bursts do not represent a sustained CUDA job. Cooling, power limits and fan behavior matter over hours. Prefer evidence from a tested configuration and treat unverified power-limit or battery claims as configuration-dependent.

Recommendations by workload

Your priority Most suitable starting point Reason
Maximum local mobile performance ThinkPad P16 Gen 3 with RTX PRO 4000 Blackwell High-power platform with the reviewed HX processor, 64GB memory and 2TB Gen 5 storage
Portable CUDA learning and prototyping ThinkPad P1 Gen 9 with RTX PRO 2000 Blackwell More travel-friendly workstation profile; suitable when larger jobs move to remote compute
Largest local VRAM ZBook Fury G1i 16 with RTX PRO 5000 Blackwell Up to 24GB dedicated GDDR7 in the listed configuration
Heavy CPU-side data preparation ZBook Fury G1i 16 configured toward 128GB DDR5-5600 More system-memory capacity for preprocessing, containers and multitasking
Balanced local development without maximum capacity Choose between the P16 and P1 after measuring model fit The correct answer depends on whether sustained throughput or daily portability is the limiting factor

Final buying decision

Buy the ThinkPad P16 Gen 3 when your priority is sustained, local CUDA work and you accept a larger performance-first machine. Choose the ThinkPad P1 Gen 9 when portability and remote-compute flexibility outweigh the limitations of an 8GB mobile GPU. Choose the ZBook Fury G1i 16 when the decisive requirement is the most available VRAM or system RAM, and verify the exact regional configuration before paying for it.
