OBS Studio is the best starting point for most PC players who want control over full-session recordings, audio, multiple sources, and optional streaming. For a simpler workflow, Radeon owners can try AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition’s built-in capture, while Steam Game Recording suits people who play through the Steam Client and want gameplay recorded in the background. There is no verified performance or image-quality winner here: choose based on how you play, what you need to capture, and what your PC can encode.

Choose software by the kind of recording you need

A replay clip, a full-length session, and a polished recording with a webcam and multiple audio sources are different jobs. Start with the workflow, then check compatibility and test the result on your own system.

Tool Best fit Workflow and scope Main trade-off
OBS Studio Players who want recording control, multiple sources, audio mixing, or the option to livestream. Local recording and production using scenes and sources such as a game, desktop, webcam, video file, or capture device. Its many settings offer flexibility but can take setup. Performance depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity.
AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition Radeon owners looking for capture integrated into AMD’s software. AMD describes its Media and Capture section as a way to capture in-game moments. Exact current clip limits, encoder choices, supported models, and relative performance are not established here; support depends on installed hardware and software.
Steam Game Recording Players who want background recording and timeline review for games played through Steam. Captures gameplay in the background through the Steam Client. Its scope is Steam Client gameplay. Valve says systems without supported NVIDIA or AMD graphics cards use the CPU for recording, which may cause a noticeable performance impact.

These are role-based recommendations, not results from a controlled comparison. No common benchmark establishes which tool produces the best image, largest frame-rate impact, or smallest files on a given PC.

OBS Studio: the flexible all-purpose option

OBS Studio is free and open source. Its scenes let you combine sources such as game capture, desktop, webcam, video files, and capture devices; it also provides audio mixing, filters, hotkeys, transitions, local recording, and streaming output. That makes it a good choice when you need more than an always-ready clip recorder.

Set up a first recording

  1. Download OBS Studio from the official OBS Project site and install the release for your operating system. The OBS system-requirements page is useful for baseline compatibility, but it cautions that having a compatible system does not guarantee it can record or stream capably.
  2. Open OBS and create a scene. In the Sources panel, add the capture source that matches your setup: game capture for a PC game, display capture for the desktop, or a video capture source for a webcam or capture device. Source names and availability can vary by operating system and game.
  3. Check the audio mixer while the game is running. Confirm that the game audio and any microphone you intend to record show activity, and make a short test recording to check levels and synchronization before capturing a full session.
  4. Open Settings and review the Output and Video settings. Choose a recording location with enough free storage, a recording format and encoder available on your system, and a resolution and frame rate your PC can sustain. There is no single safe bitrate or quality value for every encoder, resolution, and frame rate; test the actual output rather than assuming a setting will suit your hardware.
  5. Use Start Recording, play briefly, then Stop Recording. Open the saved file and check picture, audio, frame pacing, and whether the intended sources were captured. Adjust one setting at a time if the file stutters, is too large, or lacks a source.

Resolution, frame rate, encoder, and storage

Higher resolution and frame rate ask the encoder to handle more data and create larger files at comparable quality settings. A more complex scene can also add load. OBS identifies encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity as factors in recording and streaming capability. If recording causes stutter or game slowdown, first test a lower output resolution or frame rate, a less complex scene, or a different available encoder; compare short samples rather than changing everything at once.

Use an encoder your system supports, and check the resulting file before committing to a long recording. Keep enough free space for the session and avoid recording to a drive that is nearly full. The available encoder choices and their behavior depend on your operating system, GPU, driver, and OBS version, so the available information does not support a universal setting recipe.

AMD Adrenalin and Steam Game Recording

AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition

If you have a supported Radeon setup, AMD’s Adrenalin software includes a Media and Capture section positioned for capturing in-game moments. It can be a convenient first option if you want an integrated workflow rather than building OBS scenes. Check AMD’s Adrenalin product page and your installed software’s available controls for current hardware support and settings; exact clip duration, encoder options, and performance comparisons are not established here.

Steam Game Recording

Steam’s Game Recording support page describes background gameplay recording for games played through the Steam Client, with a timeline for reviewing captured play. Valve says supported NVIDIA and AMD graphics cards remove most of the performance cost of creating video recordings; on systems without those cards, recording uses the CPU and may have a noticeable performance impact. This is Valve’s product guidance, not an independent benchmark. Check the support page and Steam Client settings for current availability and controls.

Recording console gameplay on a PC

To bring console video into OBS, OBS documents two routes: use a game capture device as a Video Capture Source, or capture a console stream displayed on the PC through PS Remote Play or the Xbox app. The network route relies on the console-to-PC connection; OBS notes that a faster connection is needed for optimal quality.

When a capture device is appropriate

A USB game capture card for recording console gameplay is an accessory path for console or other external video sources, not a default purchase for PC-only recording. Before choosing one, verify compatibility with the host operating system and console output, supported resolution and frame rate, passthrough behavior, and connection requirements for the exact model. OBS names Elgato, AVerMedia, Razer Ripsaw, EVGA XR1, and Hauppauge HD PVR Pro as examples; that is not a ranking or endorsement.

For macOS and Linux, OBS recommends choosing a UVC capture card for Mac or Linux. OBS says Nintendo Switch consoles work when docked; Switch Lite cannot be used this way because it cannot be docked. For an ordinary PC game, try software capture first—OBS supports capture cards as an input, but does not say every PC player needs one.

Compatibility and performance checks

  • Check the operating system and hardware: OBS publishes baseline requirements by platform, but the page was published in 2021 and requirements can change with releases. Confirm current guidance against the OBS version you plan to install.
  • Account for the encoder and workload: Resolution, frame rate, encoder choice, and scene complexity all affect whether a system can record smoothly. A feature being available does not guarantee a usable result on a particular PC.
  • Test the real game and scene: Make a short recording under the conditions you expect to use, including your intended game, sources, and audio. Review the file before recording a long session.
  • Consider laptop GPU selection: On some laptops, the integrated GPU handles desktop work while a discrete GPU runs the game. OBS warns that if OBS uses the integrated GPU while the game uses the discrete GPU, Game Capture may fail; performance can suffer and rare crashes are possible.

Fixing OBS capture on a multi-GPU Windows laptop

OBS’s GPU Selection Guide, published in 2023, directs Windows 10 version 1809 and later and Windows 11 users to Windows Settings > System > Display > Graphics Settings to choose which GPU an app uses. Windows labels may change, so use the current Settings search if the path differs. Select the appropriate GPU for OBS, restart it, and test Game Capture again. The intended configuration depends on the laptop and game; do not assume the discrete GPU is always the right choice for every capture setup.

Common recording problems and fixes

  • The game is missing from the recording: Confirm the correct OBS scene and capture source are active. On a laptop with integrated and discrete GPUs, check whether OBS and the game are using compatible GPUs, then restart OBS and test again.
  • The recording stutters or the game slows down: Reduce output resolution or frame rate for a test, simplify the scene, and try another encoder available on your system. Steam users should also account for Valve’s warning that CPU-based background recording may noticeably affect systems without supported NVIDIA or AMD graphics cards.
  • Microphone or game sound is absent: Check the audio mixer during a test, verify that the intended device/source is selected, and play the saved sample before recording a full session.
  • A console capture is blank or unavailable: Check that the capture device is connected and selected as a Video Capture Source, or confirm that the console stream is actually visible in the PS Remote Play or Xbox app window. Verify console output and capture-device compatibility.
  • The file is unexpectedly large or the drive fills: Make a shorter sample, review its size, and adjust the recording quality, resolution, or frame rate to fit available storage. Ensure the destination drive has sufficient free space before a long capture.

Which one should you choose?

  • Choose OBS Studio for adjustable local recording, multiple sources, audio controls, scenes, or a workflow that may also include livestreaming.
  • Try AMD Adrenalin if you are a Radeon owner and want to capture in-game moments through AMD’s integrated software.
  • Try Steam Game Recording if you play through Steam and want gameplay recorded in the background for later review.
  • Use a capture device or console-to-PC streaming route when your source is a console; verify compatibility and connection needs for your chosen path.
