Choose the model that matches how much control you want. For a guided subscription that bundles software and storage, start with Arq Premium or IDrive. For a graphical app while keeping your own cloud account, use Arq 7 with a provider such as Backblaze B2. If you are comfortable managing separate services, pair a backup client with Backblaze B2 for the most portable design.

Open-source tools such as restic, Kopia and Duplicati can be excellent, but they make you assemble destinations, credentials, schedules and restore procedures. The alternatives below reduce that work in different ways. None removes the need to decide what to back up, protect your encryption password and test a restore.

What you are choosing instead of restic, Kopia or Duplicati

Open-source backup software normally separates the client from storage. You select a repository, create credentials, define retention and often schedule jobs through a command line or a self-hosted interface. That architecture is portable and transparent, but it also leaves more decisions to you.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Bundled application and storage: Arq Premium gives you one account, a graphical application, managed storage and web access.
  • Graphical application with your own destination: Arq 7 supplies scheduling, encryption, deduplication and restores while you choose a cloud, NAS, external drive or S3-compatible account.
  • Managed multi-device service: IDrive handles the client, storage and account management for computers and mobile devices.

Backblaze B2 is different: it is object storage, not a complete backup app. You combine it with a client such as Arq, Duplicati, rclone, Veeam or Synology software. That keeps the open-source-style separation of software and storage while moving the destination to a hosted service.

Arq Premium: the least configuration

Arq Premium is the closest fit when your priority is avoiding separate storage accounts. The annual listing is $69.99 for up to five computers and 1 TB of included storage. A 30-day free trial is listed. The application provides hourly or daily scheduling, compression, deduplication, block-level incremental backups, versioned backups and point-in-time recovery intended to help after ransomware.

How setup works

  1. Install the Arq application on each computer you want covered.
  2. Create or sign in to the Arq account and select the Premium storage destination.
  3. Choose folders or drives, then set an hourly or daily schedule.
  4. Set the encryption password and store it in a password manager or another protected offline location.
  5. Run the first backup and inspect the job history before relying on the schedule.
  6. Use the app’s restore workflow to recover a test file; a test confirms that the account, password and destination are usable.

Arq says backup data is encrypted before upload and that the encryption password remains with you. That is a privacy advantage, but it creates a hard recovery boundary: losing the password can make the backup unrecoverable. The included 1 TB is a limit, not an unlimited archive; estimate your source data, versions and growth before moving a large collection.

Who should choose it

Choose Arq Premium for a household with several computers that wants one guided setup and does not need to select a separate storage vendor. It is less suitable when you require a particular S3 bucket, NAS layout, regional storage location or an independently replaceable client.

Arq 7: a graphical front end for your own storage

Arq 7 costs $59.99 per computer on the listed 2026 pricing page, while storage is purchased separately. This model preserves the key benefit of open-source architectures—choosing and changing the destination—without requiring a command line for routine work.

Destinations and protection features

Arq’s destination list includes Amazon S3, Backblaze B2, Google Cloud Storage, Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, SharePoint, Wasabi, Minio, SFTP, other S3-compatible services, external drives and NAS shares. You can therefore keep a local copy, a cloud copy or both, and change providers without replacing the desktop client.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The product description lists hourly or daily schedules, compression, deduplication, block-level incremental backup, versioned backups and ransomware-oriented point-in-time recovery. Data is encrypted before upload, and the encryption password is controlled by the user. Retention windows and storage charges come from the destination you select, so read that provider’s lifecycle, deletion and download terms.

Basic installation path

  1. Install Arq 7 and activate the license for the computer.
  2. Open the destination setup screen and select a cloud service, NAS share, external drive or compatible server.
  3. Create the destination credentials with the least privilege needed to write and read the backup repository.
  4. Choose the folders, schedule and version policy.
  5. Create and securely record the encryption password before the first upload.
  6. Allow the initial backup to finish, then restore a small file to a different folder.

Who should choose it

Arq 7 is the strongest general replacement for restic or Duplicati when you want a desktop interface but refuse to be tied to one storage backend. The trade-off is administrative: you still pay for storage, manage credentials and need to understand that provider’s egress and retention rules.

Backblaze B2 plus a backup client: maximum modularity

Backblaze B2 should be evaluated as a hosted storage backend, not as a complete backup experience. Its integration page names Arq, Duplicati, rclone, Veeam, Synology and other tools. You create the bucket and access credentials, then let a compatible client handle scheduling, encryption, versioning and restores.

  • Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

When this architecture makes sense

  • You want S3-compatible object storage that can be reused by more than one application.
  • You may change backup clients later without migrating the underlying data immediately.
  • You are comfortable tracking separate software and storage bills.
  • You need a design that can also serve servers, NAS devices or scripted jobs.

Configuration checklist

  1. Create a dedicated B2 bucket for backups rather than mixing backups with general files.
  2. Create an application key restricted to that bucket and only the operations your client needs.
  3. Configure the client with the B2 endpoint and credentials.
  4. Enable encryption in the client before data leaves the computer.
  5. Set a version and deletion policy that matches your recovery window.
  6. Record the client configuration and encryption password in a separate secure location.
  7. Perform a restore test and verify that downloads and any applicable transfer charges are acceptable.

The exact cost depends on stored data, request volume, downloads and the client you select. Because those values are not fixed in the available product notes, do not treat a generic monthly estimate as a quote.

IDrive: one account for computers and mobile devices

IDrive targets people who want a managed service across several device types. A September 10, 2026 review describes coverage for PCs, Macs, mobiles and tablets and characterizes the service as user-friendly. That breadth is useful when a household’s backup requirement includes phones as well as desktop computers.

Unlike Arq 7 with a separately selected destination, IDrive handles the application and storage stack. This reduces setup and account sprawl, but it also reduces portability. Exact device limits, storage allowances, encryption choices, retention, current pricing and renewal pricing must be checked on the live plan page because they vary by plan and can change after a review is published.

Good fit and boundary

Choose IDrive when a single dashboard for computers and mobile devices matters more than selecting your own object-storage provider. Before subscribing, list every device, measure the data that must be retained and confirm that the plan covers the required operating systems and mobile backup categories.

Carbonite Safe: a conventional managed-service option

Carbonite Safe belongs to the same managed-backup category: install the provider’s software, select data and let the service operate the destination. The available product material is an older datasheet, so it should be treated as a category reference rather than evidence of current plans, limits or pricing.

How to decide in five questions

  1. How many computers need backup? Up to five computers with 1 TB included points toward Arq Premium; a single computer with a large or unusual destination points toward Arq 7.
  2. Do phones and tablets matter? Start with a managed multi-device service such as IDrive and confirm the exact mobile categories in its live plan.
  3. Do you need a specific cloud, NAS or external drive? Use Arq 7 or another client that lists that destination. Bundled services generally give you less control.
  4. Are you willing to manage two accounts? If yes, a client plus Backblaze B2 can provide a portable, modular design. If no, choose a bundled service.
  5. Can you protect the encryption password? If the answer is no, do not start any client-side-encrypted repository until you have a reliable password-storage and recovery process.

Cloud backup is not cloud sync

Sync services are designed to mirror current files between devices. A deletion or unwanted edit can propagate quickly, and a synchronized folder is not automatically a versioned, restorable backup. Backup software instead records versions according to a schedule and retention policy, allowing you to recover an earlier state.

You can use both: sync for active documents and collaboration, backup for historical recovery. Do not count a single synchronized folder as your only copy of irreplaceable data.

Use a second destination

A second copy protects against failures that affect the first destination: ransomware, accidental deletion, a damaged computer, a locked account or a provider outage. A practical arrangement is a cloud repository plus an external drive or NAS copy. Arq supports external drives and multiple destinations, so you can keep the local copy without abandoning cloud recovery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the local copy, use an external hard drive sized for the source data plus the versions you intend to retain. The available information does not establish a tested capacity or brand; choose based on your measured data and growth, and disconnect the drive when it is not being updated if ransomware exposure is a concern.

Migration plan from an open-source backup tool

  1. Inventory the existing repository: record source folders, schedules, encryption settings, retention rules and the location of repository credentials.
  2. Choose the destination model: bundled storage, Arq 7 with your own account or a client paired with Backblaze B2.
  3. Keep the old repository intact: do not delete it until the new system has completed an initial backup and a successful restore.
  4. Measure the data: include hidden folders, databases, virtual machines and any data excluded by the old configuration.
  5. Configure encryption and retention: write down the policy in plain language so you know how far back a restore should reach.
  6. Run the initial backup: allow enough time for the first upload and watch for permission or path errors.
  7. Perform two restores: recover one recently changed file and one older version to a separate location.
  8. Schedule maintenance: review failed jobs, storage growth and restore tests at least quarterly.

Common failure modes and fixes

  • Backup appears complete but important files are absent: inspect exclusions, operating-system permissions and mounted-drive paths; then run a targeted backup of the missing folder.
  • Uploads stop after the first run: check expired credentials, revoked application keys, clock errors and available local disk space used for staging.
  • Versions disappear sooner than expected: compare the client’s retention policy with the storage provider’s lifecycle or deletion rules.
  • Restore asks for a password you cannot find: stop deleting old copies. Search the password manager and offline records; client-side encryption cannot be bypassed by the provider.
  • Cloud restore is too slow or costly: restore the most urgent files first, keep a current local second copy and review the destination’s download terms.
  • A laptop is offline during scheduled jobs: choose a client that runs missed jobs when the computer reconnects, and verify that behavior in its settings.

Security practices that apply to every option

  • Use a unique account password and multi-factor authentication where offered.
  • Create dedicated storage credentials instead of reusing an administrator key.
  • Encrypt before upload when the client supports it, and protect the encryption password separately.
  • Keep one backup copy disconnected or otherwise isolated from routine device credentials.
  • Test restores, not just backup completion notifications.
  • Document which computer, destination, account and password record correspond to each repository.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which option is easiest if I do not want to configure cloud storage?

Arq Premium is the most direct fit because the application and storage are sold together. IDrive is another managed option when coverage for PCs, Macs, phones and tablets is important; verify its current plan limits first.

Should I use Arq 7 with Backblaze B2 or buy an all-in-one service?

Use Arq 7 with Backblaze B2 when destination portability and storage choice justify separate setup and billing. Choose an all-in-one service when minimizing administration is more important than switching storage providers.

Can I keep an external-drive copy as well as cloud backup?

Yes. Arq supports external drives and multiple destinations, allowing a local copy alongside cloud storage. Keep the drive disconnected when it is not being updated if you want additional ransomware resistance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens if I lose an Arq encryption password?

Arq states that the password remains with the user. Without it, the encrypted backup may not be recoverable, so store it in a password manager and a protected offline record.

Is cloud sync enough for ransomware recovery?

No. Sync mirrors changes and deletions, while a versioned backup preserves historical states according to its retention policy. Use backup for recovery even if you also use sync for everyday files.

Are there independent tests proving which service is fastest?

No apples-to-apples setup-time or restore-reliability benchmark is established here. Choose based on workflow, device coverage, storage control, encryption ownership and restore testing rather than an unsupported speed ranking.

The Bottom Line

For the simplest guided cloud backup, choose Arq Premium; for several computers and mobile devices, investigate IDrive’s current plan; for control and portability, use Arq 7 with a cloud provider; and for a modular, technical setup, pair a client with Backblaze B2. Whichever model you select, protect the encryption password, keep a second destination and prove recovery with a test restore.
