The Anritsu 68387B is a synthesized RF signal generator and frequency sweeper with a nominal 10 MHz to 60 GHz range. Despite catalog listings that call it a “waveform generator,” it is not a modern arbitrary-waveform or vector signal generator: its strengths are microwave carrier generation, frequency and power sweeps, and analog AM, FM and pulse modulation. Its output power falls substantially in the highest bands, and options, connectors and calibration condition matter when assessing a particular unit.

What the Anritsu 68387B is

The 68387B belongs to Anritsu’s 68300B performance series. It is a single-channel synthesized microwave source for generating continuous-wave (CW) signals, sweeping frequency and applying analog modulation. The nominal range is 10 MHz to 60 GHz; the original model table expresses its lower limit as 0.01 GHz. The manufacturer-family documentation describes a synthesized signal generator, while some catalog pages classify it as a waveform generator. That label should not be read as evidence of modern IQ modulation or general-purpose arbitrary-waveform playback.

The specification lists internal modulation waveforms such as sine, square, triangle, positive and negative ramps, Gaussian noise and uniform noise. User-defined modulation waveforms are associated with Option 10 and require a computer/controller and software. This is a narrower capability than a contemporary AWG or vector signal generator. See the 68387B specification PDF and the 68300B operation manual.

Output power by frequency band

The advertised 60 GHz upper limit does not mean that the generator provides the same power across its range. The specification gives these maximum output levels:

Frequency range Maximum output Maximum with step attenuator
10 MHz to 2 GHz +12 dBm +10 dBm
Above 2 GHz to 20 GHz +10 dBm +8.5 dBm
Above 20 GHz to 40 GHz +2.5 dBm 0 dBm
Above 40 GHz to 50 GHz +2 dBm −1.5 dBm
Above 50 GHz to 60 GHz +2 dBm −2 dBm

These are band-specific maximums, not a single full-band rating. In particular, applications above 40 GHz should be planned around the lower available output. If the system needs more drive at 50–60 GHz, determine whether an external amplifier or another source is appropriate. Figures are from the 68387B specifications.

Modulation and waveform capabilities

AM

The specification describes external linear and logarithmic AM through front- or rear-panel BNC input, with selectable 50-ohm or 600-ohm input impedance. Linear AM depth is 0–90% typical; logarithmic AM is up to 20 dB typical. AM bandwidth is at least DC to 50 kHz, with 100 kHz typical. Maximum external input is ±1 V. These figures are test-condition-dependent; consult the specification for the conditions relevant to a particular measurement.

FM

Narrow and wide FM modes are documented, with approximate maximum deviations of ±10 MHz and ±100 MHz respectively. Sensitivity and usable rate depend on the selected mode, and the external modulation input is via front- or rear-panel BNC with selectable 50-ohm or 600-ohm impedance. Do not treat the two deviation figures as interchangeable or as a complete description of FM bandwidth, noise or locked performance.

Phase modulation

Phase modulation is listed for applicable configurations. Confirm the installed configuration and its specifications rather than assuming every 68387B has the same phase-modulation capability.

Internal modulation and user-defined waveforms

Internal modulation includes sine, square, triangle, positive ramp, negative ramp, Gaussian noise and uniform noise. The internal FM generator’s sine rates are specified from 0.1 Hz to 1 MHz; other listed waveforms are specified from 0.1 Hz to 100 kHz, with 0.1 Hz resolution. Its output is on a rear-panel BNC. Option 10 provides user-defined waveform capability when used with the required controller and software. Neither the standard internal waveforms nor Option 10 make the instrument equivalent to a current high-bandwidth AWG with IQ waveform playback.

Pulse modulation

The instrument supports external or internal pulse modulation. The family documentation describes TTL-compatible positive-true or negative-true logic and internal triggered, gated, delayed, singlet, doublet, triplet and quadruplet modes. PRF limits extend to 10 MHz in unleveled operation and 5 MHz in levelled operation; pulse width depends on frequency and clock selection. The relevant pulse specification gives rise/fall time below 10 ns, with a typical value below 5 ns. Check the band and levelled/unlevelled conditions in the specification before treating these as application guarantees.

Sweep functions and level control

The 68387B can generate fixed CW signals and perform broad or narrow frequency sweeps, step sweeps and analog/manual sweeps. It also supports power sweeps. The specification lists power-step sizes down to 0.01 dB and step dwell times from 1 ms to 99 seconds. A step-attenuator change can add approximately 20 ms of dwell, so a fast sweep that crosses an attenuator setting may not behave like one that stays within a setting.

  • Test methods: During the test, the frequency of the source input transceiver is first set to -100DB or any value. The intercom has audio output and then reduces the output strength of the source. For example, the -120DB just heard the intercom audio but there was noise. The audio just hears that the -120DB value of this output is the receiving sensitivity of the radio.

The operation manual notes that front-panel operation and IEEE-488 remote control are available, with power-on/standby functions excepted from remote control. A seller’s document list for the model identifies the available manuals and is useful for locating them: National Test Equipment’s 68387B document listing. For related Anritsu legacy-family driver and documentation context, see the Anritsu MG3690B Series downloads page; it does not establish direct compatibility for every 68387B setup.

RF connector and accessories

The specification identifies Type K female connectors on models up to 40 GHz and Type V female on models above 40 GHz. Because the 68387B reaches 60 GHz, verify the physical connector and serial-number configuration rather than ordering cables or adapters from a generic product image. Above 40 GHz, connector condition, transitions, cable quality and calibrated power sensors all affect whether a measurement is useful. A setup that only needs lower bands may have different accessory requirements.

What to check before buying a used 68387B

A successful power-on is not evidence that a used generator meets its frequency, level, phase-noise, flatness, modulation or pulse specifications. Ask the seller for evidence tied to the bands and functions you will actually use.

  1. Request the complete serial number and photographs of the model, rear-panel labels and installed-option labels.
  2. Obtain the installed-option list, including confirmation of the step attenuator, time-base option and front-panel configuration.
  3. Ask for a recent calibration certificate or performance-verification report covering your required frequency bands, especially above 40 GHz.
  4. Request test evidence for output power, frequency accuracy and any modulation or pulse functions essential to your application; a general self-test alone may not establish those results.
  5. Inspect the RF connector for wear or damage and confirm whether it is Type K or Type V. Check that the seller includes the cables and adapters you need.
  6. Verify GPIB operation and the command set supported by the unit. Confirm that any intended USB-to-GPIB controller, software and operating system work together.
  7. Check front-panel controls and display, power-up behavior and included modulation cables. Confirm the AC supply is compatible with the unit’s rated input.
  8. Ask for the last calibration date, laboratory, return terms and any warranty. Used listings are quote-based and configuration-dependent; no single current price is established by the available seller listings.

For calibration-service availability, Tektronix lists Anritsu instruments for quote-based service on its Anritsu calibration page. Confirm service coverage for the specific model, frequency range and required procedure directly.

Alternatives and selection criteria

For a newer analog microwave source

Anritsu’s MG3690B and MG3690C families are examples to compare when newer analog-source functionality or support is important. They are not automatic drop-in replacements: compare frequency coverage, output power, modulation, connectors, remote interfaces and software with the actual test system. Anritsu’s MG3690B Series downloads page includes legacy-family documentation and driver context, but does not guarantee compatibility for a specific application.

For IQ or communications waveforms

Choose a vector signal generator if the requirement is IQ modulation, modern communications-standard signals, radar waveforms or high-bandwidth arbitrary modulation. Compare carrier range, instantaneous and IQ bandwidth, waveform memory and formats, phase noise, interfaces, calibration and service support.

For low-frequency arbitrary waveforms

A conventional function or arbitrary-waveform generator is usually a more appropriate tool for audio, baseband, logic and low-frequency laboratory signals. The 68387B’s microwave coverage does not make it a replacement for a high-bandwidth modern AWG.

Compare the requirement, not just the headline frequency

  • Required frequency bands and output power at each band
  • CW, sweep, analog modulation or vector modulation requirements
  • Phase-noise and frequency-reference stability needs
  • Output connector and existing cable, adapter and sensor inventory
  • Frequency resolution, calibration availability and repairability
  • Remote-control interface, command compatibility and integration effort

Datasheet and manuals

The commonly circulated 68387B specification PDF is dated February 2002. The 68300B operation manual is dated July 2003 in available equipment-document listings. These are legacy documents, so match the manual and option descriptions to the unit’s model, serial number and installed configuration.
