Dr. Letitia Wright’s experience is not a story about a machine taking over her career. In her account for The AI Journal, generative AI helps with repetitive preparation and routine entrepreneurial work, leaving more room for experimentation, strategy and human connection. That is a meaningful change in how one person works, but it is not proof that AI improves every job or guarantees better earnings.
The broader evidence supports a careful version of her optimism: exposure to generative AI is widespread, while complete automation of whole occupations remains uncommon. Whether the technology expands someone’s possibilities depends on the tasks involved, the quality of human oversight, the way an employer redesigns work and whether saved time becomes a real benefit rather than simply more demands.
What Wright says AI changed in her work
Wright’s career has moved through healthcare, television, crowdfunding, streaming media and live social selling. She presents those transitions as a continuing process of learning rather than a single technology story. Her recurring question is, “What can I learn that I didn’t know yesterday?” In that context, AI is a collaborator for preparation and exploration, not a substitute for her judgment or relationships.

Those tasks can include organizing information, preparing drafts, exploring possibilities and handling first-pass work that would otherwise consume attention. Her formulation is precise: “AI doesn’t eliminate the work, but removes much of the repetition surrounding the work, which matters.” The value, in her telling, comes from what she can do with the recovered attention.

Her live-selling experience also sets a boundary. A system can help someone prepare, but live interaction still depends on trust, responsiveness and a sense of connection with another person. Wright’s account therefore describes technology supporting a human performance, not producing the performance on its own. It does not establish that AI caused higher sales, faster career progression or better outcomes.
The concern underneath her optimism is familiar: “whether our skills will still matter.” Her answer is conditional. Skills matter when they are used to frame a problem, check an answer, make a decision, adapt to a person and take responsibility for the result. AI can change the mix of tasks around those skills without making the skills irrelevant.
Exposure is not the same as replacement
Statistics about generative AI often sound like forecasts of mass unemployment, but occupational exposure measures something narrower. The International Labour Organization (ILO) assesses the tasks performed in occupations and estimates how much of that task mix could be affected by current generative AI. It does not say that every exposed job will disappear.
| Measure | What it says | What it does not say |
|---|---|---|
| One in four workers worldwide in an occupation with some GenAI exposure (ILO, 2025) | Generative AI may affect at least some tasks in a large share of occupations. | One in four workers will lose their jobs. |
| 3.3% of global employment in the highest exposure category (ILO Working Paper 140, 20 May 2025) | A much smaller group has an occupational task profile with the greatest modeled exposure. | 3.3% represents observed layoffs or confirmed automation. |
| Most jobs more likely to be transformed than made redundant (ILO, 2025 update) | Human input remains necessary for many tasks, even where AI is introduced. | Every worker will benefit, or that job quality will automatically improve. |
This distinction explains why Wright can experience substantial change without experiencing job replacement. A role may contain tasks that AI can accelerate while still requiring a person to set goals, interpret context, resolve exceptions, communicate with others and accept accountability. The technology changes the composition of the work before it changes the existence of the occupation.
How task composition determines the result
The ILO’s task-based method matters because job titles hide very different activities. Two people with the same title may spend different proportions of their week on drafting, analysis, coordination, physical work or relationship management. AI exposure therefore varies within an occupation and between workplaces.

| Task pattern | Potential role for GenAI | Human responsibility that remains |
|---|---|---|
| Repetitive information handling | Create a first draft, sort material, summarize or transform text. | Define the purpose, verify facts and correct errors. |
| Open-ended creative development | Generate alternatives, variations or starting points for experiments. | Select a direction, apply taste and decide what fits the audience. |
| High-stakes advice or decisions | Surface relevant information or possible scenarios. | Use professional judgment, explain the decision and carry liability. |
| Live interpersonal work | Prepare talking points or background material. | Read the situation, build trust and respond appropriately in real time. |
| Physical, local or exception-heavy work | Provide planning or documentation support where appropriate. | Perform the hands-on work and handle conditions the system cannot observe. |
The ILO reports that few jobs consist entirely of tasks that current generative AI can automate. Nearly all occupations include activities requiring human input. That is why “exposure” should be read as a prompt to examine a workflow, not as a label predicting a person’s fate.
Where the extra possibility can come from
Less repetition
Removing repeated formatting, searching, drafting or reworking can make a day feel different even when the job title stays the same. The benefit is not the keystrokes saved; it is the possibility of redirecting attention to work that was previously postponed. Wright treats this reclaimed capacity as room for learning and experimentation.
More experiments before commitment
A person who can quickly produce several rough approaches may test an idea earlier and abandon weak versions at lower cost. In a small business or independent project, that can make experimentation feasible alongside other responsibilities. AI-generated alternatives are starting material, not finished decisions: they still need checking for accuracy, originality, audience fit and practical constraints.
More strategic and relational time
Preparation support can leave more time for planning, negotiation, teaching or direct contact with customers and colleagues. Wright’s live-selling example illustrates this pattern. Technology may help someone arrive prepared; the interaction itself still depends on the person conducting it.
A continuing learning loop
Wright links career changes with curiosity about what she can learn next. AI can make it easier to ask for explanations, compare approaches or turn an unfamiliar task into a sequence of smaller questions. That does not remove the need to learn the underlying subject. Without enough knowledge to challenge an answer, a worker may become faster at accepting an error.

What the productivity evidence actually shows
The ILO’s review published on 1 June 2026 examined experiments, firm-level data, platform studies and worker and firm surveys from Australia, Denmark, Germany, Korea, Kuwait, the United Kingdom and the United States. Its conclusion is more cautious than a simple “AI makes everyone more productive” claim.
- Productivity gains appear in some settings, but they are uneven.
- Many reported gains have not been independently verified at scale.
- Workers have reported time savings amounting to a few per cent of working hours in some studies.
- Those time savings have not yet consistently translated into higher measured output, earnings or employment.
- The evidence reviewed shows limited large-scale displacement so far, but that is not a guarantee about every sector or country.
Several explanations are possible. A worker may save time on a task while spending the time on quality checks, new assignments or customer service that was previously impossible. An employer may capture the saved capacity by increasing targets rather than reducing hours. A faster draft may require extensive verification. These possibilities mean that a personal feeling of increased capacity and an organization’s measured output can both be genuine without being the same thing.
For an individual, the practical test is to define the expected benefit before adopting AI. Is the goal a shorter turnaround, more alternatives, fewer errors, better service or time for a different activity? Measure that outcome over a representative period instead of treating the existence of a generated answer as proof of productivity.
What labor-market forecasts can and cannot tell you
The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025, announced on 7 January 2025, projected 170 million new jobs and 92 million displaced jobs by 2030. Those figures combine several forces, including technology, economic change and demographic shifts; they are not a GenAI-only causal estimate and are not observed results.
The same survey reported that 77% of employers planned to upskill workers, while 41% planned workforce reductions as AI automates certain tasks. These are employer-reported intentions. A plan can change because budgets, regulation, demand or implementation results change. The figures are useful for understanding how employers say they are preparing, but they cannot predict what will happen to a particular worker.

For readers deciding how seriously to take a forecast, separate three questions:
- Exposure: Could the technology affect tasks in this occupation?
- Adoption: Has a particular employer actually introduced it into this workflow?
- Outcome: Did adoption change pay, staffing, quality, workload or autonomy?
Reports often answer the first question, sometimes describe intentions related to the second and rarely settle the third for every context.
A practical way to use AI without surrendering your role
- List the real tasks in your week. Write down recurring activities rather than relying on your job title. Include preparation, communication, checking, physical work and exception handling.
- Mark the consequence of an error. Low-stakes formatting and brainstorming can tolerate experimentation. Medical, financial, legal, safety or reputational decisions require a higher verification threshold and may restrict what data can be entered.
- Choose a narrow assistive use first. Start with a bounded task such as creating an outline, proposing questions or reorganizing notes. Keep the source material and your final decision under your control.
- Set a human review point. Decide in advance who checks factual claims, calculations, citations, tone, confidentiality and compliance. “Human in the loop” is meaningful only when the reviewer has time, authority and enough subject knowledge to reject the output.
- Record the result you care about. Compare turnaround time, rework, error rate, customer response or learning progress with a sensible baseline. A shorter first draft is not a benefit if verification takes longer than the original task.
- Protect the work that gives you leverage. Keep practicing core skills, documenting decisions and learning the domain. If a system changes, those capabilities help you evaluate its output and move into higher-value tasks.
- Review the arrangement with other people. In a workplace, clarify whether saved time means reduced hours, new responsibilities, training or simply higher volume. Individual efficiency cannot resolve an unfair workload policy.
Limits and failure modes to plan for
Confidently wrong output
Generative systems can produce fluent statements that are inaccurate, incomplete or unsupported. Verify names, numbers, quotations, technical instructions and any claim that affects another person. Keep a record of authoritative sources when the work requires auditability.
Confidentiality and data governance
Do not paste personal, proprietary or regulated information into a service unless your organization has approved the practice and explained how the data is handled. Redaction, access controls and retention rules are part of the workflow, not optional afterthoughts.

Deskilling and loss of autonomy
If workers stop performing the reasoning behind a task, they may lose the ability to detect a bad recommendation or continue when the system is unavailable. Rotate responsibilities, retain manual practice where it protects competence and make escalation paths explicit.
Unequal access to the benefits
Someone with time for training, reliable tools and authority to redesign a workflow is more likely to experience expansion than someone whose employer uses AI only to increase monitoring or output targets. The same technology can improve job quality in one setting and worsen it in another.
What this story does—and does not—prove
Wright’s essay demonstrates a credible personal pattern: AI can reduce repetition around entrepreneurial work and create space for preparation, experimentation and human interaction. It also shows why career adaptability matters when tools change. Her conclusion, “The future doesn’t belong to AI,” places responsibility with people who decide how technology is used.
Her experience is not a controlled productivity test, a prediction for every occupation or evidence that AI improves sales. The ILO’s estimates describe population-level task exposure, and its 2026 review finds uneven, often unverified productivity effects. The World Economic Forum numbers describe employer expectations through 2030. Taken together, these sources support neither panic nor a blanket promise.
A defensible conclusion is narrower and more useful: AI may expand a worker’s possibilities when it handles limited, reviewable parts of a workflow and the person uses the recovered capacity for judgment, learning, creativity or connection. Whether that expansion becomes better work depends on measurement, safeguards and the choices made by workers and employers.
