Narrow AI solves defined problems, artificial general intelligence (AGI) would transfer strong reasoning across most intellectual work, and artificial superintelligence (ASI) would surpass humans across virtually every relevant cognitive domain. Narrow AI is deployed today. AGI has no universally accepted test and has not been conclusively demonstrated. ASI remains hypothetical.
The three categories at a glance
These labels describe different levels of breadth, transfer, performance and autonomy—not a simple ranking of how impressive a product feels. A system can be extraordinary in one domain and still be narrow because its abilities do not reliably carry over to unrelated work.
| Dimension | Narrow AI (ANI) | Artificial general intelligence (AGI) | Artificial superintelligence (ASI) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Task scope | A specific task, product or bounded domain | A broad range of intellectual tasks | Virtually all relevant cognitive domains |
| Transfer to new problems | Limited unless retrained, reconfigured or connected to new tools | Expected to apply skills and knowledge in unfamiliar domains | Expected to transfer skills while substantially exceeding human experts |
| Comparison with people | Can beat people on a particular benchmark or workflow and fail elsewhere | Usually described as human-level or better across many kinds of work | Far beyond the best human performance across nearly all domains of interest |
| Autonomy | Normally constrained by a product, workflow or operator | Definitions often include high autonomy | Would imply very high capability and autonomy, creating unresolved control questions |
| Status | Deployed and widely used | No agreed threshold; not conclusively demonstrated | Hypothetical |
The boundaries are conceptual. There is no official meter that turns a narrow system into AGI at a particular score, and “superintelligence” is a possible future condition rather than a verified product category.

Task-specific competence
Narrow AI, also called artificial narrow intelligence (ANI), is designed for a particular problem-solving or reasoning task. The task may be tiny, such as identifying spam, or extremely complex, such as routing aircraft, detecting patterns in medical images or translating between languages. The defining feature is not low capability; it is bounded applicability.

A chess engine can calculate positions more accurately than any person, yet it does not thereby understand a tax return or repair a network. A recommendation model may predict what a user will watch, but it does not automatically know how to design a bridge. Its competence is tied to the data, objectives, interfaces and safeguards built for its domain.
Why “superhuman” can still be narrow
“Superhuman” describes performance relative to people on a specified task. It does not mean general intelligence. A model that wins a benchmark may have learned powerful patterns, benefited from a carefully designed test or optimized for a narrow objective. To establish broader intelligence, evaluators would need evidence that the system can handle unfamiliar tasks without rebuilding the system for each one.
How narrow systems are built and limited
Most deployed systems combine a model with data pipelines, rules, software tools and monitoring. Those surrounding components define what the product can see and do. A fraud detector may score transactions but cannot open a bank account; an image classifier may label a scan but cannot independently manage a patient’s treatment.
- Scope limits: Inputs, outputs and permitted actions are usually specified in advance.
- Transfer limits: A skill learned in one setting may fail when terminology, conditions or objectives change.
- Reliability limits: Errors can arise from incomplete data, unusual cases, distribution shifts or ambiguous instructions.
- Oversight limits: High-impact uses generally require people to review results, approve actions or handle exceptions.
Where today’s language models fit
Language models can write, summarize, translate, explain code and answer questions, which makes them look broad. In the classification used by IBM, even ChatGPT is narrow AI in the sense that it is limited to a text-chat task. The OECD likewise notes that language models can display broad capabilities while remaining applicable to relatively narrow contexts, making errors and requiring human assistance and oversight.
This classification does not deny that one model can perform many subtasks. It says that fluent output and a large menu of prompts are not, by themselves, proof of robust, autonomous competence across the full range of work.
What AGI would add
Broad, transferable ability
Artificial general intelligence is a hypothetical system with strong, general-purpose competence across many intellectual tasks. The crucial property is transfer: the system would use knowledge and reasoning developed in one context to make progress in a different, unfamiliar context without requiring a new model or extensive task-specific engineering.

Definitions differ
IBM describes AGI, or “strong AI,” as a theoretical concept and notes that proposed definitions vary. OpenAI’s Charter uses an economic-performance definition: “Our mission is to ensure that artificial general intelligence (AGI)—by which we mean highly autonomous systems that outperform humans at most economically valuable work—benefits all of humanity.” That definition emphasizes autonomy and work output rather than a particular architecture or test score.
Google DeepMind’s Levels of AGI framework separates breadth of capability from depth of performance and also discusses autonomy and risk. Under that approach, a system might be broad but shallow, or excellent at a few tasks but not general. Stating which definition is being used is therefore essential whenever someone claims that a system is—or is not—AGI.
Capabilities an AGI evaluation would need to examine
- Novel-task learning: Can the system learn a new task from limited instruction instead of requiring a new training cycle?
- Cross-domain transfer: Can it apply concepts from language, mathematics, physical reasoning and social contexts when the problem combines them?
- Robustness: Does performance hold when examples, wording, tools, environments or goals change?
- Long-horizon planning: Can it decompose a complicated objective, monitor progress and recover from mistakes?
- Economic usefulness: Under a definition such as OpenAI’s, can it outperform people at most economically valuable work while operating with substantial autonomy?
Passing one of these tests would not settle every definition. A system could demonstrate impressive transfer but remain unreliable, or achieve high benchmark scores while needing extensive human direction.
What superintelligence means
Performance beyond human experts
Artificial superintelligence describes a hypothetical intelligence that greatly exceeds human cognitive performance across virtually all relevant domains. The comparison is broader than “better than people at chess” or “faster at coding.” It implies superiority in science, strategy, creativity, social reasoning, learning and other areas that matter to the question being asked.

Why ASI is usually discussed after AGI
In the common progression, AGI supplies broad, transferable competence and ASI represents a further increase in depth and speed. The sequence is not guaranteed. A system could improve unevenly, remaining weak in important areas, or become highly capable in selected domains without becoming generally superintelligent.
Control and governance questions
A system that can plan and act at a level beyond human experts would raise questions that do not arise in the same form for ordinary narrow tools: how objectives are specified, how actions are constrained, how humans verify decisions, how institutions respond to rapid capability changes and how misuse is prevented. Those are governance and safety problems, not evidence that ASI currently exists.
Comparing the concepts by the questions that matter
Breadth versus depth
Breadth asks how many kinds of tasks a system can handle. Depth asks how well it performs each task. Narrow AI can have enormous depth in a small area. AGI requires meaningful breadth with strong performance across that breadth. Superintelligence combines very broad coverage with performance substantially above human experts.

Transfer and adaptation
Transfer is the dividing line that ordinary product demonstrations often hide. A narrow system may need retraining, new labeled data, a different prompt template or a redesigned tool connection when the task changes. An AGI-level system would be expected to adapt its existing knowledge and reasoning to new problems. ASI would do so while outperforming the best available human specialists.
Autonomy
Autonomy concerns how much useful work a system can conduct without step-by-step human direction. A narrow application can automate a workflow while remaining tightly constrained. AGI definitions often include high autonomy because broad economic usefulness requires more than producing isolated answers. Superintelligence would imply capabilities and initiative at a scale for which control mechanisms are not yet established.
Evidence status
Narrow AI is demonstrated in deployed systems. AGI and ASI are labels applied to hypothetical or disputed future capabilities. A claim that a system has reached either level must therefore identify the definition, evaluation conditions and independent evidence rather than relying on a striking conversation or a single benchmark.

Why it is difficult to decide whether a system is AGI
There is no single AGI test
The field has no universally accepted threshold comparable to a driving-licence exam. OpenAI’s economic definition and DeepMind’s levels framework measure different aspects of generality. IBM’s overview highlights competing interpretations. Until researchers agree on what counts, two credible assessments can reach different conclusions about the same system.

A benchmark is a sample of tasks, not a guarantee of competence everywhere. Test contamination, repeated exposure to familiar formats, hidden shortcuts and narrow scoring rules can make results look stronger than real-world performance. A fair evaluation should include unfamiliar problems, changing conditions, adversarial cases and tasks that require sustained interaction.
Fluency is not reliability
Text that sounds confident can still contain factual errors, unsupported reasoning or invented details. General intelligence would require dependable performance, calibrated uncertainty and the ability to recognize when a task exceeds the available information. Human review remains important when the cost of an error is high.
Autonomy changes the standard
An assistant that answers questions is not equivalent to a system that independently identifies goals, gathers information, uses tools, manages a long project and handles unexpected failures. Reports about AGI should state whether people selected every subtask, approved each action or supplied the missing context.
Capability can be uneven
Modern systems may solve advanced problems and fail simple ones, depending on wording, context length, external tools and the presence of recognizable patterns. Such an uneven profile makes a single label misleading. Report the distribution of performance, not just the highest score.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Define the label. State whether “AGI” means human-level performance across a specified task set, highly autonomous performance at most economically valuable work, or another published framework.
- List the tested domains. Include the types of reasoning, learning, communication and practical action evaluated, not just the best demonstration.
- Use unfamiliar tasks. Separate training examples from genuinely new problems and record how much prompting, tool setup or human coaching was required.
- Measure transfer. Test whether a skill learned in one domain helps with another and whether the system can adapt when conditions change.
- Record autonomy. Document who chose the objective, supplied information, approved actions and corrected errors.
- Report failure modes. Include hallucinations, brittle behavior, refusal errors, safety incidents, latency, resource requirements and situations in which the system needs human assistance.
- Separate capability from deployment. A laboratory result does not show that a system is reliable, affordable, safe or authorized for unsupervised use in the real world.
Common misconceptions
“If it beats humans once, it is AGI.”
Beating humans on one benchmark establishes a result for that benchmark. It does not establish broad transfer, reliable adaptation or autonomy across unrelated work.

“A chatbot that discusses any subject is general intelligence.”
Conversational range can mask narrow operating conditions. The system may still depend on a text interface, limited context, external tools and human correction, and it may fail when a task requires persistent action in the physical or organizational world.
“AGI and ASI are the same thing.”
AGI concerns generality: competence across many kinds of work. ASI concerns an additional performance gap: abilities far beyond humans across virtually all relevant domains. A generally capable system would not automatically be superintelligent.
“There must be a reliable arrival date.”
No authoritative consensus statistic establishes when AGI will arrive, and no verified system has achieved AGI or superintelligence. Forecasts are opinions shaped by definitions, assumptions and evidence; they should not be presented as settled schedules.
What these distinctions mean for organizations and users
Choose tools by task, not by label
For a real project, ask what the system must do, how errors will be detected and what human approval is available. A specialized model may be safer and easier to validate than a broader assistant when the workflow has clear inputs and outputs.
Design for human oversight
Set escalation rules for uncertainty, require review before high-impact actions, log inputs and outputs, limit permissions and provide a way to reverse mistakes. Oversight is not proof that a system is unintelligent; it is a control for known reliability and accountability limits.
Evaluate changes over time
Model updates, new tools and altered data can change performance. Re-run representative tests after updates, include edge cases from actual use and monitor whether users are quietly expanding the system into tasks it was never validated to perform.
Are we close to superintelligence?
The evidence available today does not establish that any deployed system is AGI, much less ASI. Current systems can combine language, vision, code and tool use in ways that feel general, but they remain limited by context, reliability, transfer and the need for human assistance. Because neither AGI nor ASI has a universally accepted operational test, a responsible answer must identify the definition and evaluation method instead of offering a confident date or inevitability claim.
