GitHub’s forecast that its platform would have 100 million developers by 2025 was fulfilled ahead of schedule: the company announced on January 25, 2023, that more than 100 million developers were using GitHub. Its 2025 Octoverse later reported more than 180 million. These are GitHub platform figures, not a count of every software developer worldwide.
What GitHub predicted
In its 2020 State of the Octoverse, GitHub reported more than 56 million developers on the platform and said it expected that number to double to 100 million by 2025. GitHub later said it had set the goal in 2019. The prediction concerned people using GitHub, not the global population of software developers.
Thomas Dohmke, then GitHub’s CEO, described the target in the company’s January 25, 2023 announcement: “In 2019, we set a goal to have 100 million developers using GitHub by 2025—because we know when more developers come together in a single place, incredible things happen.”
Did GitHub reach 100 million developers by 2025?
Yes. GitHub announced in January 2023 that more than 100 million developers were using the platform—two years before its 2025 target. GitHub’s 2024 Octoverse also recapped that it reached the milestone in early 2023.

How many developers use GitHub now?
GitHub’s 2025 Octoverse reported that more than 180 million developers work and build on the platform. The report was published on October 28, 2025, and its page was updated on February 28, 2026. The figure is GitHub’s own platform statistic; it should not be read as a worldwide census of professional or amateur software developers.
