The case gets stronger when price holds reclaimed levels on weekly closes, forms a higher high and higher low, and gains support from spot-market demand and other evidence. Treat these as clues, not a reliable way to call a bottom: a bounce can briefly satisfy several of them and still fail.
Start with price structure, not the size of the rally
On daily and weekly charts, compare the latest swing highs and lows with the previous ones. A rally that remains below a prior lower high may still be a bounce within a downtrend. A higher high that clears that resistance is more meaningful; the next test is whether price can pull back and hold the reclaimed area rather than immediately falling through it.
Use dated analysis for context, not as a permanent threshold. Bitwise Europe’s September 2026 analysis described Bitcoin as remaining in a broader lower-high structure until a cited hurdle was cleared. The relevant hurdle changes with the market. Binance Research likewise framed its September 2026 observations around specific levels and closes, not a timeless rule.
Check whether the move persists on longer timeframes
Compare price with the 50-day and 200-day moving averages, then inspect weekly closes around longer-term references. The 50-day average responds more quickly to recent movement; Nasdaq Dorsey Wright describes the 200-day as an intermediate-term strength measure. A brief reclaim is not confirmation: look for follow-through and whether pullbacks hold above the level.
#1 Best Overall
Weekly closes can help distinguish a fleeting intraday move from sustained acceptance above a reference. In its September 28, 2026 report, Binance Research said Bitcoin’s September 20 weekly close at US$81,159 was its first close above the 50-week moving average since November 9, 2025, a 45-week interval. The report said sustained weekly closes above that average would strengthen the reversal case, while a close back below would weaken it. Those figures describe that report’s dated market snapshot, not current levels.
Moving-average signals can whipsaw. Fidelity Digital Assets’ Q3 2024 report said Bitcoin crossed above and below its 200-day simple moving average seven times during the quarter before ending 10% higher than it began. That example is a reminder that a crossing is evidence to monitor, not a standalone verdict.

Look for participation behind the price rise
Spot-market activity
Ask whether spot-market activity is broadening alongside price. A rise with weak spot volume deserves more caution than one accompanied by stronger participation. Charles Schwab’s April 29, 2026 Bitcoin Monitor described weak spot volume alongside a rebound, illustrating why price direction alone can give an incomplete picture.
ETF flows
Spot Bitcoin ETF net flows offer another, imperfect demand signal. In its September 28, 2026 report, Binance Research said US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded US$999 million of inflows on September 21, which it described as the largest single-day inflow of that year as of the report date. It also said its cumulative 2026 flow series recovered from a US$5.69 billion net-outflow trough on July 13 and later moved into positive territory. These are Binance Research’s attributed figures and dates; flows fluctuate and do not guarantee a continuing advance.
Rank #3
Use realized price as context, not a bottom signal
Realized price estimates the average acquisition price of circulating Bitcoin supply. Glassnode describes a combined regime marker that is active only when spot price is above both realized price and the 200-day simple moving average. It presents the conjunction as a broad regime marker, not a method for timing a low. Treat it as one piece of context alongside price structure and participation, rather than a buy-or-sell trigger.
Weigh the case for a bounce against the recovery case
| Evidence to check | A bounce remains plausible | The recovery case strengthens |
|---|---|---|
| Timeframe and persistence | The rally is concentrated on short timeframes, or a moving-average reclaim is quickly lost. | Weekly closes hold trend references through pullbacks. |
| Swing structure | Price fails at an earlier lower high or cannot hold a reclaimed level. | Price makes a higher high and then a higher low. |
| Participation | Spot activity is weak or demand signals do not support the advance. | Spot activity and ETF flows corroborate demand over time. |
| Cost-basis context | Price does not remain above relevant cost-basis references. | Price remains above relevant context such as realized price, alongside other evidence. |
| Macro conditions | Higher yields, rate expectations or wider risk conditions threaten the move. | Macro conditions do not provide a clear counter-signal. |
These are diagnostic categories, not a mechanical trading system. Indicators can turn at different times. When the evidence is mixed, identify what has improved and what has not, and wait for follow-through rather than forcing a confident label. Providers may differ in venues, smoothing windows and definitions, so note the source and timeframe when using a specific reading.

Keep dated market commentary in its proper context
Binance Research’s September 28, 2026 report described a September 8 golden cross, when the 50-day average crossed above the 200-day after 293 days below it. Its cited historical sample showed peak gains of roughly 100–600% within the following year, but the report cautioned that these were peak gains, not holding returns, and that the small, overlapping sample limits predictive value. It is not a forecast or a universal threshold.
The same report noted higher Treasury yields as a risk to the recovery setup despite technical improvement and ETF demand. That is why counter-evidence matters: bullish signals do not erase a failed level, weaker participation or deteriorating wider conditions. All market observations above are historical report snapshots, not a live Bitcoin call.

A practical checklist before calling it a recovery
- Mark the swing structure: On daily and weekly charts, identify the latest lower high and whether price has clearly exceeded it.
- Watch the retest: If price reclaims resistance or a moving average, see whether it holds through a pullback and weekly close.
- Check participation: Compare the rise with spot activity and ETF-flow trends, using dated figures from the provider you consult.
- Add cost-basis context: Note whether price is above realized price and the 200-day simple moving average, without treating their conjunction as a bottom call.
- Look for counter-signals: Consider weakening participation, failed levels and macro risks such as interest-rate expectations.
- Keep the conclusion provisional: A recovery case is stronger when several independent clues persist together; no single reading settles the question.
