Save your trip details, note exactly what you observed, and contact the robotaxi operator’s support or privacy channel with specific questions about the ride. A camera, microphone indicator, support connection, or privacy notice does not by itself prove that a recording was sent, kept, or made unlawfully. Whether consent was required depends on the operator, the type of recording, where the ride occurred, and the applicable law.

What should you do first?

  1. Save the ride information. Keep the receipt or trip ID, operator name, date and approximate time, and pickup and drop-off areas. Save relevant app notices, support messages, and screenshots if available.
  2. Write down what you personally observed. For example, note a camera or microphone indicator, a support call, an in-app disclosure, or a safety stop. Separate what you saw or heard from what you think it might mean; an indicator does not establish whether data was transmitted or retained.
  3. Contact the operator. Use its in-app support or privacy channel and identify the ride. Ask for a written response about the specific data and event rather than assuming all vehicles or trips work the same way.
  4. Keep the exchange. Save your request and the operator’s response. Do not send passwords, financial-account numbers, or other sensitive details that are not needed to identify the ride.

What should you ask the operator?

Ask the operator to clarify what happened on your particular trip. You can request answers to these questions:

  • What data was collected, including video, audio, location, or sensor data?
  • Was audio or video captured, transmitted outside the vehicle, or reviewed by a person? If so, when and under what trigger?
  • Who accessed the data or received it, and for what purpose?
  • How long is that specific data retained, and what criteria determine when it is deleted?
  • What process is available to request access, deletion, or another privacy action, and are there any opt-out choices that apply?

If a dispute, safety investigation, or other matter is ongoing, ask whether relevant data can be preserved before you request deletion. Do not assume that a general privacy notice gives one retention period or guarantees a particular access or deletion outcome.

Does a camera or microphone indicator mean the robotaxi recorded you?

Not necessarily. Sensor presence, an active indicator, or a support connection may describe a capability or a particular use; it does not establish by itself that a recording was made, transmitted, retained, or accessed. The operator’s published descriptions also differ, so do not apply one company’s explanation to another service.

For example, Waymo says cabin cameras support trip assistance, cleanliness checks, seatbelt confirmation, and lost-item checks. Its Help page says support may review video in some circumstances after an issue is brought to its attention and may access live video during a trip in more urgent circumstances. Waymo describes its external audio-detection system as detecting police and emergency-vehicle sirens, with safeguards intended to limit collection of human voice data. Its Help FAQ states: “We can only hear you when you’re on a call with Support or when you actively choose to have microphones on.” These are Waymo’s descriptions of its service, not proof of what happened on an individual ride. How do Waymo and Tesla describe their data practices?

The table summarizes the operators’ published descriptions. These are company statements, not independent verification of vehicle behavior or a determination of what occurred on a particular trip.

Topic Waymo Tesla Robotaxi
Cabin cameras and video Waymo says cabin cameras support trip assistance, cleanliness checks, seatbelt confirmation, and lost-item checks. Support may review video after an issue is reported and may access live video in more urgent circumstances. Tesla says cabin-camera data is not sent to Tesla during an active ride unless ride support is initiated, it is needed for occupancy detection, or a safety event occurs. A green indicator is displayed when the cabin camera is active. After a ride, Tesla says the camera is used to check vehicle readiness, including cleanliness and lost items.
Audio and siren detection Waymo describes external audio detection for police and emergency-vehicle sirens, with technical and procedural safeguards intended to limit collection of human voice data. Waymo says it can hear riders during a Support call or when they actively choose to turn microphones on. Tesla says sound detection sends account-associated audio only when a rider initiates a support request or a safety event occurs; an orange indicator appears when the microphone is in use. Tesla says siren detection is processed locally.
Other recording triggers and account linkage The cited Waymo materials describe support-related video review and audio conditions; they do not establish a universal trigger or account-linkage rule for every recording. Tesla describes safety-event camera clips of up to 30 seconds associated with the account, while external fleet-learning camera recordings are described as anonymous. Tesla also says vehicle data may be unassociated with an account, encrypted so Tesla cannot decrypt it, or inaccessible unless a safety event, rider consent, or another legal basis triggers access. Location from the rider’s mobile device and vehicle is associated with the account during a requested ride.
Retention and privacy statements Waymo’s August 24, 2026 privacy post says, “We do not sell personal information collected by our vehicles’ cameras and other sensors.” The post points to its Services Privacy Policy for details about personal data and rights; it does not set out every retention period or request process. Tesla says personal data is retained as long as necessary for its stated purposes or as required by law, using criteria including purpose, relationship, contract, consent, and legal requirements. Its notice does not give one universal retention interval for every recording.
Privacy requests Waymo’s privacy post directs riders to its Services Privacy Policy for information about personal data and rights, and mentions an app control labeled “Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information” for standard digital marketing trackers. That control should not be assumed to address every in-vehicle recording. Tesla’s notice points California residents to privacy request routes, including account-based and non-account options. Ask about the specific ride and data rather than inferring an individual recording’s fate from the general notice.

Sources: Waymo Help; Waymo privacy post, August 24, 2026; Tesla Robotaxi Privacy Notice. The Tesla notice’s “up to 30 seconds” figure is its description of safety-event camera clips, not a typical recording length or an industry-wide statistic.

Did you consent, and was consent required?

That cannot be answered from the presence of a sensor alone. The relevant facts include the operator, the ride’s location, what type of data was collected, how it was used, what notice or choices applied, and the current law. Do not treat an acknowledgement that a vehicle is driverless as blanket consent to every possible cabin recording.

A December 2022 Waymo filing with the California Public Utilities Commission described a plan to tell passengers through app onboarding that the service is driverless and obtain acknowledgement. The quoted notice said: “You will be a passenger in an autonomous vehicle. If your ride is taking place in California, you will be participating in driverless autonomous vehicle passenger service operated by Waymo pursuant to authority granted by the California Public Utilities Commission.” That filing concerns notice of driverless service; it does not establish consent to all recording, and it does not establish that the same onboarding language remains current. Who should you complain to?

For a California autonomous-vehicle safety incident

If your concern includes an incident involving an autonomous vehicle on California public roads, the California DMV accepts feedback and incident reports through its Autonomous Vehicles Incident Reporting page. The DMV says not to include sensitive information such as a Social Security number, driver-license number, or financial-account number.

For an autonomous-vehicle safety complaint

The same DMV page directs people with autonomous-vehicle safety complaints to NHTSA’s Automated Vehicle Complaint Form or the Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
