A normal in-place Windows 11 feature update is designed to keep your installed apps, personal files, and settings. It is not the same as a clean install. However, setup may remove an app that blocks the upgrade or is known to be incompatible, and some optional content may not carry over if its package cannot be obtained. Back up important files before you begin.

What a Windows 11 feature update is meant to preserve

A feature update moves a PC to a newer Windows 11 release. Microsoft describes an in-place upgrade as preserving existing data, settings, applications, and drivers, so that is the expected behavior when you install a newer Windows 11 release through the normal in-place path. Microsoft’s feature-update deployment guidance distinguishes this from moving between Windows versions, such as upgrading from Windows 10 to Windows 11.

That is the intended retention behavior, not a guarantee that every app, driver, default, or interface detail will behave exactly as before. Release-specific changes and compatibility issues can affect individual programs or configurations.

When apps or optional content may be missing

Apps that block or fail compatibility checks

Windows Setup can remove apps known to cause upgrade problems or known not to work correctly with Windows 11. An app removed as a setup blocker may be reinstallable after the update; if the issue is compatibility, check with the app publisher for an updated version. Microsoft’s Windows 11 FAQ and upgrade and installation error guidance describe these compatibility considerations.

If you rely on a business-critical program, check the vendor’s guidance and, where practical, test it against the target Windows release before broad deployment. Microsoft recommends regular compatibility testing for important business applications in its Windows 11 upgrade guidance.

Language resources and Features on Demand

Some optional content has a separate package dependency. Language resources and Features on Demand may need to be acquired during an in-place update; if setup cannot locate or retrieve the relevant package, that content can be absent afterward. This matters particularly for managed PCs, where deployment settings and access to package sources can affect availability. See Microsoft’s language-pack acquisition and retention guidance.

How the installation path changes what is kept

Do not treat a routine feature update as equivalent to resetting or reinstalling Windows. When you start setup from installation media, the available “what to keep” choice determines the outcome; the exact choices depend on the setup flow.

Path or setup choice Apps and settings Personal files
In-place Windows 11 feature update Designed to be retained Designed to be retained
Installation media: “Keep personal files and apps” Kept in the applicable setup flow Kept
Installation media: “Keep personal files only” Apps are removed; not all settings are retained Kept
Clean install or “Keep nothing” Removed Removed

Microsoft’s installation-media reinstall instructions explain the available keep options. If you are unsure which process you are using, check the setup screen before continuing; the selection matters more than the phrase “Windows update.”

Back up before you start

Make a separate copy of important files before installing a new Windows version. Microsoft’s backup guidance names OneDrive and an external backup device as options. An external drive is optional for a routine feature update, but it provides a separate copy that is useful if something goes wrong.

Windows Backup is a distinct recovery aid: it can save apps and settings to the cloud for restoration. Find it at Settings > Accounts > Windows Backup. Do not confuse that backup feature with the retention behavior of the update itself.

  • Identify whether you are using Windows Update, installation media, Reset this PC, or a clean install.
  • For essential apps, check the publisher’s compatibility advice and test the target release when practical.
  • After the update, check Windows Update and the app publisher for applicable updates if a program or device component behaves unexpectedly.

What if you need to go back?

Windows usually offers the “Go back” option for 10 days after an upgrade, according to Microsoft’s current rollback guidance. Availability depends on the required recovery files and other conditions remaining in place. Going back keeps personal files, but removes apps and drivers installed after the upgrade and reverses settings changes made since then.
