To use Google Wallet for in-store payments on a Pixel, add an eligible debit or credit card, turn on NFC, set Wallet as the default contactless payment app, and use a supported screen lock. The exact card must be supported by both Google Wallet in your country and your bank or card issuer.
Check that your Pixel and card are eligible
Google Wallet requires Android 9 or later, a Google Account, and up-to-date Google Play Services and Wallet. Wallet does not support rooted phones or work profiles. For tap to pay, the phone must also meet Google’s security requirements, have NFC, and use a screen lock.
Card availability depends on your country, bank, and specific card product. A card’s own contactless feature does not guarantee that it can be added to Google Wallet. Check Google’s supported payment methods for your region, and ask your issuer if your card is not listed or cannot be verified.
Add a payment card
- Open Google Wallet. If it is not installed, download it from the Play Store. Sign in with your Google Account and follow the setup prompts.
- Start adding the card. Tap Add to Wallet, choose Payment card, then New credit or debit card.
- Enter the card details. Scan the card or enter its information manually, then accept the issuer’s terms.
- Complete verification. Follow any steps requested by your bank or card issuer. You can also add a card from your bank’s app if it offers an Add to GPay option.
The issuer can decline a request to add a card; Google cannot override that decision. Cards previously added to Google Pay should appear in Wallet, but payment cards still need tap-to-pay setup when you move to a new phone.

Turn on NFC and choose Wallet as the default
- Open your Pixel’s Settings app and search for NFC.
- Turn on NFC.
- In the NFC settings, open Contactless payments and tap Payment default.
- Select Google Wallet and confirm if prompted.
Settings menus can differ by device and software version, so searching Settings is the most reliable way to find the controls. Some screens or help instructions may call the default payment app “Google Pay”; choose Wallet if that is the app name shown on your Pixel.
Set a supported screen lock and check setup status
Google requires a screen lock and identity verification for payments. Supported methods include a PIN, pattern, password, and supported Class 3 biometric unlock. Smart Unlock and Knock to Unlock cannot verify a payment. Google’s help page also says Face Unlock on Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro is not supported for tap-to-pay transactions; be ready to verify with another supported method. See Google’s verification requirements for current details.

Troubleshoot common setup and payment problems
| What you see | What to try |
|---|---|
| “Turn on NFC to pay with Wallet” | Turn on NFC in Settings. If the phone says it does not have NFC, check the capability of your specific Pixel model. |
| “Card not set up” or “Finish setup” | Complete the verification flow shown in Wallet. If the issuer declines the card addition, contact the issuer. |
| “Card suspended” | Contact your bank or card issuer. |
| “Phone can’t be set up for tap and pay” | Check that NFC is on and that the phone meets Google’s security requirements. Google lists rooted devices, custom ROMs, unlocked bootloaders, and uncertified software among possible causes. |
| The terminal does not register the tap | Hold the phone closer and still for a few seconds, try a different position, and check that the terminal accepts contactless payments. |
| The payment is declined | Confirm that the merchant accepts contactless payments and contact the issuer if needed. Google says a declined transaction does not charge the card. |
