On Windows 10 and Windows 11, the usual PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrntScrn key copies a full-screen image to the clipboard. Press Ctrl+V in Paint, a document, or another image-capable app to see it, then save the image. For an automatic file, press Windows+PrtScn; Microsoft says that capture is saved in PicturesScreenshots.
If your key does nothing, work through the checks below in order. Each test separates a missing file, a changed Windows setting, and a keyboard problem without assuming that the hardware is faulty.
What Print Screen is supposed to do
Microsoft describes Print Screen as a static image of the entire screen placed in the clipboard, not necessarily written to disk. The image therefore disappears from view until you paste it with Ctrl+V. See Microsoft’s screen-copy guidance and Snipping Tool guidance.
Key labels and layouts vary. Look in the upper-right area for PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrntScrn. Some compact keyboards omit a dedicated key; Microsoft documents Fn+Windows+Space for devices without a PrtScn button. A laptop may also place Print Screen on a shared key that requires its function layer, so check the legend printed on your keyboard rather than assuming one universal Fn combination.

Fix Print Screen step by step
1. Confirm the key and its function layer
Read the keycap carefully. If it says PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrntScrn, press it once, open Paint, and press Ctrl+V. On a shared laptop key, hold the keyboard’s documented Fn modifier. If there is no Print Screen legend at all, try Microsoft’s documented Fn+Windows+Space alternative, or proceed directly to Windows+Shift+S.
2. Test the clipboard instead of looking for a file
Open Paint from the Start menu, press Print Screen, then press Ctrl+V. If the image appears, capture succeeded; choose Paint’s save command and select PNG or another format. This test matters because a standard Print Screen press can leave no new item in File Explorer even though the clipboard contains the screenshot.

3. Use the shortcut that saves a file
Press Windows+PrtScn together. Open File Explorer and browse to PicturesScreenshots. If your keyboard requires a function layer, include the documented Fn key. This is a separate path from clipboard-only Print Screen, so a missing file after pressing PrtScn alone is not evidence that capture failed.
4. Check whether Print Screen now opens snipping
Windows can assign the Print Screen button to open the screen-snipping overlay. Check Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and review the Print Screen option. When this behavior is enabled, pressing the key may show a selection interface rather than silently placing a full-screen image in the clipboard. Microsoft documents this setting in its Windows keyboard shortcuts guidance.
5. Open Snipping Tool directly
Press Windows+Shift+S. Choose rectangular, freeform, window, or full-screen snip, make the selection, and use the notification to open the editor. From there, copy the image or use the save control. You can also open Snipping Tool from Start and select its capture mode. If this works while the physical key does not, you have a reliable workaround and a useful indication that the issue is limited to the key or its assigned behavior—not proof of a particular hardware failure.

6. Determine whether the key is physically absent or faulty
Try the built-in shortcuts above and test the keyboard in another ordinary text task. If Snipping Tool and Windows+PrtScn work but the individual key never triggers anything, inspect the keyboard layout and function-layer behavior. A replacement keyboard with a clearly labeled Print Screen key is a reasonable physical remedy only when the key is genuinely missing or defective; buying one will not correct a Windows setting or clipboard misunderstanding. Why there is still no screenshot in OneDrive
Microsoft says the “Save screenshots to OneDrive” setting is no longer available. To back up screenshots, include the Pictures folder in OneDrive. Limits and less obvious cases
The Microsoft material documents the built-in Windows paths above, not every third-party key-remapping utility, remote-desktop implementation, keyboard firmware, or protected application. If these tests produce different results in a particular app or session, reproduce the problem in Paint and Snipping Tool first. That controlled check tells you whether the issue belongs to Windows’ capture path or to the environment where you first noticed it.

Where does a Print Screen image go if I press only PrtSc?
It normally goes to the Windows clipboard. Open Paint or another image-capable app and press Ctrl+V, then save the pasted image.
Can I capture only one window instead of the whole desktop?
Yes. Press Windows+Shift+S and choose the window snip mode, or open Snipping Tool and select its window capture option.
