The App Switcher on the iPhone 15 is a screen of previews for recently used apps. It lets you return to an app without reopening it from the Home Screen, move quickly between apps, and force-quit an app that is frozen. Visible previews do not prove that every app is actively running in the background.
Because every iPhone 15 model uses Face ID and has no Home button, the App Switcher opens with a swipe-up-and-pause gesture. The same basic gesture works on the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
Key takeaways
- The iPhone 15 App Switcher opens when you swipe up from the bottom edge, pause around the middle of the screen, and release.
- The App Switcher displays recently used app previews, not a guaranteed list of apps that are actively using the processor.
- You can switch apps by tapping a preview or by swiping left or right along the bottom edge of the screen.
- Swipe upward on an app preview only when an app is frozen, unresponsive, or malfunctioning; routinely quitting apps usually does not save battery.
- Removing an app preview from the App Switcher quits the app but does not uninstall the app or delete its documents.
What is an App Switcher on the iPhone 15?
The App Switcher on the iPhone 15 is a visual navigation screen containing previews of apps you used recently. Tapping a preview returns you to that app, often close to the screen where you stopped.
The App Switcher is not the Home Screen, where you launch installed apps and view widgets. The App Switcher is also not Control Center, which provides quick access to settings and controls such as Wi-Fi, brightness, and volume.

Apple’s iPhone App Switcher instructions describe the feature as a way to switch between open or recently used apps. “Recently used” is the important distinction: an app card can remain visible even when iOS has suspended the app rather than allowing the app to keep actively running.
How do you open the App Switcher on an iPhone 15?
To open the App Switcher on an iPhone 15, swipe up from the bottom edge of the display, pause near the center of the screen, and then lift your finger.
- Place your finger directly on the very bottom edge of the screen.
- Swipe upward slowly.
- Pause when your finger reaches approximately the middle of the display.
- Release your finger when the app previews appear.
The App Switcher opens with a group of overlapping app cards. Swipe left or right across the cards to browse recently used apps, then tap the preview for the app you want.
Apple groups the iPhone 15 with iPhone models that do not have a Home button. Apple’s iPhone controls documentation confirms the relevant hardware distinction, while Apple’s Face ID gesture guide documents the swipe-up-and-pause gesture.
Why does the swipe sometimes open the Home Screen instead?
If the swipe-up gesture opens the Home Screen, you probably lifted your finger too quickly or did not pause in the middle of the display. A quick swipe upward means “go Home,” while a slower swipe followed by a pause means “open the App Switcher.”
Starting the gesture too far above the bottom edge can cause the current app to scroll instead. Swiping down from the top-right corner opens Control Center, not the App Switcher. Begin at the bottom edge and keep the motion vertical until the pause.

How do you switch between apps on an iPhone 15?
You can switch between apps on an iPhone 15 either by opening the App Switcher and tapping a card or by using the faster bottom-edge swipe.
| Method | Steps | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| App Switcher cards | Swipe up from the bottom, pause, swipe through the previews, and tap an app. | Choosing an app from several recently used apps. |
| Bottom-edge app switching | Swipe left or right along the bottom edge of the screen. | Moving back and forth quickly between two apps. |
| Home Screen or App Library | Swipe up and release immediately, then tap an app icon; or open the App Library and select an app. | Launching an installed app that is not in the recent previews. |
The bottom-edge gesture is particularly useful when alternating between Messages and Safari, Notes and Mail, Maps and Music, or a password manager and a sign-in page. A horizontal swipe along the bottom edge moves to another recent app without requiring the full App Switcher to appear.
If a horizontal swipe does not work, make sure the gesture begins at the bottom edge. Some apps use controls near the bottom of the screen, so a deliberate horizontal movement along the edge is more reliable than swiping from the middle of the display.
What do the App Switcher previews mean?
Each App Switcher card is a visual snapshot of an app’s last visible state. The snapshot helps you identify the app and see where you left off, but the snapshot does not prove that the app is currently running.
When you leave an iPhone app, iOS can move the app into a suspended state. A suspended app is not actively being used in the foreground and does not keep operating like a desktop computer window. iOS can later resume the app from its saved state, or the app can reload if the system needs to reclaim memory or the app does not preserve its previous state.
Some background activity is separate from the App Switcher. If Background App Refresh is enabled, eligible suspended apps can check for updates or new content. Apple identifies the relevant setting as Settings > General > Background App Refresh. Apple’s guidance on switching apps and suspended apps explains why a recent-app card should not be treated as proof of continuous background activity.

Is the iPhone 15 App Switcher the same as multitasking?
The iPhone 15 App Switcher supports rapid movement between apps, but it is primarily a recent-app navigation interface rather than a desktop-style multitasking dashboard.
| Feature | Main purpose | How to open it on iPhone 15 |
|---|---|---|
| App Switcher | Browse recent app previews and return to an app. | Swipe up from the bottom edge, pause, and release. |
| Home Screen | Launch installed apps and view widgets. | Swipe up from the bottom edge and release immediately. |
| Control Center | Access system controls and settings shortcuts. | Swipe down from the top-right corner. |
| Background App Refresh | Allow eligible apps to check for updates or new content in the background. | Settings > General > Background App Refresh. |
Seeing several cards does not mean that all of those apps are simultaneously active. The iPhone App Switcher is different from more extensive iPad multitasking features such as split-screen layouts. The iPhone can support limited features such as Picture in Picture where an app and its content support that feature, but App Switcher cards themselves do not create split-screen windows.
How do you close or force-quit an app on the iPhone 15?
To force-quit an app on an iPhone 15, open the App Switcher and swipe upward on that app’s preview until the card disappears. Force-quitting is mainly useful when an app is frozen, ignores touches, or behaves abnormally.
- Open the App Switcher with a swipe up from the bottom edge followed by a pause.
- Swipe left or right until you find the malfunctioning app.
- Place your finger on the app preview and swipe it upward off the top of the screen.
- Return to the Home Screen or App Library and tap the app icon to reopen it.
Apple’s instructions for quitting and reopening an iPhone app recommend quitting an app when the app is unresponsive or malfunctioning. Apple also provides a separate force-closing explanation for an app that will not respond.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Swiping away an app preview does not delete the app. The app remains installed on the iPhone 15, and the app’s documents, account, and data are not erased simply because the app was force-quit. To remove an app permanently, use the app’s delete option from the Home Screen or App Library instead.
Should you close every app in the App Switcher to save battery?
Usually, no. Apple says that routinely quitting iPhone apps generally does not save battery power, so constantly swiping every card away is not recommended as normal maintenance.

iOS manages suspended apps and system resources automatically. Force-quitting every app can also prevent an app from checking for new content in the background until you open the app again. Closing an app can be a sensible troubleshooting step, but it is not a reliable way to clear memory, make the iPhone permanently faster, or extend battery life.
| What you want to do | Recommended action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Return to a recently used app | Open the App Switcher and tap its preview. | The App Switcher is designed for quick resumption. |
| Alternate between two recent apps | Swipe left or right along the bottom edge. | The bottom-edge gesture is faster than browsing cards. |
| Fix a frozen or misbehaving app | Force-quit that specific app and reopen it. | Relaunching can clear a temporary app state. |
| Save battery | Do not routinely force-quit apps; review app and system settings if battery use is a concern. | Apple says quitting apps typically does not save battery. |
| Remove an app permanently | Delete the app from the Home Screen or App Library. | Removing a preview only quits the app. |
Force-quitting cannot fix every app problem. Account errors, network failures, compatibility issues, damaged app data, app bugs, and iPhone hardware problems can persist after an app is reopened.

An app returning to its previous screen is generally normal because the App Switcher is intended to let you resume an app where you stopped. The app may not return to exactly the same screen in every situation.
An app can reload instead of resuming its previous state if you force-quit the app, iOS reclaimed memory, the app crashed, the app was updated, the app does not preserve its state, or the app’s content changed while you were away. A visible preview can therefore show an older screen even when the app needs to reload after you tap it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should you do if the App Switcher will not open?
If the App Switcher will not open, first treat the problem as a gesture issue and then determine whether the iPhone’s touchscreen is failing more broadly.
- Start directly at the bottom edge of the display.
- Swipe upward slowly rather than flicking quickly.
- Pause around the middle of the screen before releasing.
- Try the gesture from the Home Screen, where app-specific bottom-edge controls are not involved.
- Check whether a case, screen protector, dirt, or moisture is interfering with the bottom edge or touch response.
- Try a different gesture elsewhere on the iPhone. If touches fail throughout iOS, the issue may be broader than the App Switcher.
- Restart the iPhone if the screen responds but iOS is behaving abnormally.
- If the iPhone is completely unresponsive, use Apple’s restart or force-restart procedure appropriate to the device’s condition.
If only one app is stuck, open the App Switcher, swipe upward on that app’s card, and reopen the app. If several gestures fail across the phone, consider an accessibility setting or a touchscreen problem rather than repeatedly retrying the same App Switcher motion.

What if the swipe gesture is difficult?
AssistiveTouch can provide an alternative way to interact with some iPhone controls and gestures for people who have difficulty performing a swipe-and-pause motion. AssistiveTouch is an accessibility workaround, not the standard way to open the App Switcher. Apple’s accessibility conformance material identifies AssistiveTouch as an alternative interaction method.
App Switcher mistakes to avoid
- “Every card is an actively running app.” A card represents recent app activity and a preview; iOS may have suspended the app.
- “Closing all cards saves battery.” Apple says routine quitting generally does not save battery.
- “Swiping a card deletes the app.” Swiping upward force-quits the app session but does not uninstall the app.
- “The App Switcher clears memory and permanently speeds up the iPhone.” Force-quitting is a targeted troubleshooting action, not routine performance maintenance.
- “The App Switcher is the same as iPad split-screen multitasking.” The App Switcher enables rapid app switching; it does not turn iPhone app cards into side-by-side windows.
- “The procedure works the same way on every iPhone.” The instructions in this article apply to the iPhone 15 and other Face ID iPhones without a Home button. Older Home-button iPhones use a different App Switcher gesture.
What is the simplest way to remember the App Switcher gesture?
Remember: up, pause, choose. Swipe up from the bottom edge, pause to display the recent app cards, then choose an app by tapping its preview. For quick back-and-forth switching, swipe left or right along the bottom edge. Only swipe a card upward when the app needs to be force-quit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the iPhone 15 have an App Switcher?
Yes. The iPhone 15 has an App Switcher that displays previews of recently used apps. Swipe up from the bottom edge, pause near the middle of the screen, and release to open it.
How do I open the App Switcher without a Home button?
On an iPhone 15, swipe up from the bottom edge, pause around the center of the display, and then lift your finger. A quick swipe without pausing returns to the Home Screen instead.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Should I close apps on my iPhone 15 to save battery?
Usually, no. Apple says routinely quitting apps generally does not save battery, so let iOS manage ordinary suspended apps. Force-quit an individual app when the app is frozen or malfunctioning.
Does swiping an app up in the App Switcher delete it?
No. Swiping an app preview upward force-quits that app but does not uninstall it or delete its documents and account data. The app remains available from the Home Screen or App Library.
Why is an app still visible in the App Switcher if it is not running?
The App Switcher shows recent app previews, not only apps that are actively running. iOS can suspend an app while retaining a preview so you can return to it quickly.
The Bottom Line
The iPhone 15 App Switcher is a recent-app navigation tool, not a list of apps that must be manually managed. Swipe up from the bottom edge and pause to open it, tap a preview to switch apps, and swipe upward on one app only when that app is frozen or misbehaving. Routine force-quitting is usually unnecessary and does not normally save battery.
