The right Linux issue tracker depends on the work you need to control. Choose a bug-first system for developer defects, a helpdesk for customer requests and service-level queues, a project platform for roadmaps and dependencies, or a code-integrated tool when issues should live beside repositories and documentation. The 19 systems below are free and open source, but they differ substantially in workflow, complexity, and operating burden.

This guide groups all 19 options by practical use, then explains what each one is suited to, what to verify before deployment, and how to run a fair self-hosted evaluation.

All 19 Linux issue trackers at a glance

Use this table to narrow the field by workflow before comparing individual features. The categories reflect each project’s primary role in the roundup, not a claim that the software cannot support other workflows.

Start with the workflow, not the feature list

Issue tracking is a broad category. A defect tracker records reproducible software failures; a service desk manages conversations, queues, agents, and response targets; a project platform coordinates work over time; and a code-integrated system ties tickets to commits, reviews, or documentation. Selecting by name recognition alone often produces an awkward process that users work around.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Bug-first development tracking

Choose this group when the core record is a software defect or engineering task. Version, reproducibility, severity, component, and developer ownership matter more than customer-facing intake.

  • Bugzilla, MantisBT, Trac, Roundup, and Flyspray are oriented toward software defects and development tickets.
  • Fossil is appropriate when distributed version control, bug tracking, and a wiki should be delivered together.

Before committing, confirm that the tracker can represent your release versions, component hierarchy, duplicate handling, permissions, and notification rules. Those details determine whether triage remains usable as the project grows.

Helpdesk and service-desk operations

Use a service-desk system when requests arrive from customers or other departments and must be assigned, queued, prioritized, and measured against service expectations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Zammad, osTicket, Znuny, OpenSupports, FlowInquiry, and Qisutu are the strongest fits for support-oriented work.
  • Request Tracker and Eventum suit teams that need mature or flexible ticket workflows rather than a purely developer-centric bug list.

Evaluate mailbox or portal intake, queue permissions, agent assignment, escalation, SLA handling, customer visibility, and export options. A tool can be open source yet still require substantial configuration before it behaves like your service desk.

Project and portfolio coordination

Choose a project-management platform when issues are only one part of a larger planning process involving roadmaps, dependencies, milestones, budgets, or multiple teams.

  • OpenProject, Plane, and Redmine are the clearest project-oriented choices in this list.
  • Phorge can support broader collaboration around software projects, while Request Tracker and Eventum provide flexible ticket workflows for organizations that do not want a narrowly defined bug model.

Ask whether the product’s planning views match your operating cadence. A team that only needs a backlog may find a portfolio platform excessive; a program with dependencies and cross-team milestones may outgrow a basic ticket queue.

Detailed guide to the 19 systems

1. OpenProject

OpenProject is a collaborative project-management system for planning and tracking work. It is the broadest fit when issue records must connect to structured project delivery rather than stand alone. Consider it for teams that need a shared planning environment across projects and departments. Validate which planning, reporting, authentication, and collaboration capabilities are available in the free Community edition versus an Enterprise add-on before designing your process.

2. Zammad

Zammad is a web-based, open-source helpdesk and customer-support system. Its natural home is an operation receiving external requests and routing them through support workflows. It should be shortlisted when agent queues, customer communication, and a service-desk experience are more important than source-code defect metadata. During evaluation, test how incoming requests become tickets, how agents collaborate, and how customers see status changes.

3. Plane

Plane is a modern project-management tool built around issues, cycles, and roadmaps. The model suits teams that plan work in recurring delivery periods while maintaining a longer-term view. A comparison updated October 2, 2026 describes its interface as close to a modern tracker and identifies intake, cycles, and modules among its capabilities. Plane’s Community edition is licensed under AGPL-3.0, so review the exact edition and feature boundaries you intend to run.

4. Request Tracker

Request Tracker is a mature, enterprise-grade issue tracker. Its value is flexibility: organizations can shape ticket fields, queues, permissions, and routing around established processes. That flexibility can require more administration than a lightweight tracker. Define your queue structure and escalation rules on paper first, then verify that the implementation can express them without custom work that your team cannot maintain.

5. MantisBT

MantisBT is a PHP issue tracker that uses MySQL. It is a practical candidate for software teams seeking a conventional web-based defect system in a familiar PHP and database environment. Concentrate your proof of concept on project and component organization, severity and priority handling, duplicate detection, notifications, and the workflow for closing and reopening defects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. osTicket

osTicket is a customer-support ticket system. It belongs on a shortlist when the primary intake is support requests rather than internal engineering tasks. Map your real support path—request arrival, categorization, assignment, response, escalation, and closure—to the system before rollout. Also test retention, backups, and permissions because support records may contain customer information.

7. Fossil

Fossil combines distributed version control with bug tracking and a wiki server. This integrated approach is useful for projects that want source history, issue discussion, and technical documentation close together instead of spread across separate services. It is less naturally suited to a general customer-service desk. Confirm how your contributors will use its repository-centered workflow and how you will expose only the information that external users should see.

8. Bugzilla

Bugzilla is a web-based bug-tracking system focused on software defects. It is a strong conceptual fit when triage depends on reproducibility, versions, components, and developer ownership. Before migration, inventory the fields and states in your existing tracker; a clean mapping is more important than importing every historical custom field. Test search and reporting with realistic data, not only a handful of sample bugs.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

9. Roundup

Roundup is described as a simple-to-use and install issue tracker. That simplicity can benefit a small team that wants a focused system without adopting a large project suite. Keep the initial configuration close to the default workflow, then add only the fields and states that answer a real triage question. A lightweight installation is still a production service, so schedule backups and upgrades from the beginning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. Trac

Trac is an issue tracker suited to development projects. It is a candidate when tickets need to sit alongside technical project context and an engineering-oriented workflow. Assess its fit by running a complete defect lifecycle: report, reproduce, assign, link to implementation work, verify, and close. Include your repository and documentation conventions in that test so you measure the workflow your developers will actually follow.

11. Redmine

Redmine is a flexible project-management web application with a mature, plugin-heavy ecosystem. It can accommodate multiple projects and varied processes, making it attractive to organizations that expect to extend their tracker over time. The trade-off is governance: every plugin adds compatibility and upgrade considerations. Redmine is licensed under GPLv2. A comparison updated October 2, 2026 characterizes its plugin ecosystem as the deepest among the products it reviewed; treat that as a positioning statement, then verify current plugin maintenance for your required integrations.

12. Flyspray

Flyspray is a simple web-based PHP bug tracker. Its focus makes it appropriate for teams that want a dedicated defect list without a full project-management suite. Check the PHP runtime, database, authentication, and upgrade requirements for the version you plan to deploy. In the pilot, make sure triagers can find related defects quickly and that notifications do not become noisy enough to be ignored.

13. Znuny

Znuny is a fork of OTRS and is aimed at service-desk workflows. It is relevant to organizations that need structured support operations and are comfortable with a more process-oriented system. Document queues, roles, templates, escalation paths, and reporting requirements before configuration. Because it derives from a mature service-desk lineage, confirm which integrations and administration skills are available to your team today.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

14. Eventum

Eventum is described as a user-friendly and flexible issue tracker. That combination can suit teams that need more adaptable workflows than a simple bug list while still wanting an approachable interface. Test the system with your actual categories, ownership rules, and notifications. Pay particular attention to how a ticket moves between groups, because flexibility is useful only when transitions remain understandable to users.

15. FlowInquiry

FlowInquiry combines tickets, workflows, and SLA tracking. It is a logical candidate when requests must follow defined process steps and response or resolution targets. Write down the clock rules you need—when an SLA starts, pauses, resumes, and breaches—then reproduce them in a pilot. Do not assume that the presence of an SLA label means the defaults match your contractual or internal targets.

16. Pachno

Pachno is positioned as friendly issue tracking. It may appeal to teams that want a less intimidating interface for organizing issues without adopting a large service desk or portfolio suite. Use a representative backlog to assess navigation, permissions, search, notifications, and reporting. Friendly presentation should be judged alongside the administrative work required to keep projects and users organized.

17. OpenSupports

OpenSupports is a simple ticketing system for support scenarios. It is best considered by small teams whose essential need is receiving and resolving tickets rather than coordinating complex engineering plans. Verify portal and agent roles, ticket history, attachments, notifications, and data export. If your support operation needs detailed SLAs or many queues, compare those requirements against a more service-desk-oriented option before choosing simplicity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

18. Phorge

Phorge is a community-maintained fork of Phabricator. Its orientation is collaborative software development, making it relevant when code-related work, reviews, and project coordination need a shared environment. Community-maintained projects can evolve through contributor effort, so inspect current release activity, documentation, upgrade procedures, and integration support before placing critical workflows on it.

19. Qisutu

Qisutu provides straightforward ticket management for teams and support workflows. It is a sensible starting point when you want a clear ticket process without immediately adopting a broad project suite. Model your intake, assignment, statuses, and reporting needs with real examples. Then verify authentication, backups, import and export, and the limits of the free edition before production use.

Licensing, editions, and ownership

“Open source” describes how software is licensed and distributed; it does not guarantee that every hosted service or advanced module is free. A self-hosted edition may be free while a vendor-hosted tier, enterprise module, SSO connector, or premium report carries a separate cost.

System License or edition detail identified for comparison Operational implication
Plane AGPL-3.0 Community edition Confirm which capabilities are included in Community before deployment.
OpenProject GPLv3 Community edition with an Enterprise add-on Separate the free Community baseline from Enterprise-only functions in your requirements.
Redmine GPLv2 Plugins expand capability but add compatibility and maintenance work.

Other projects in the list should be checked against their current license and release documentation before adoption; the roundup establishes that all 19 are presented as free and open-source software, but it does not provide a license matrix for every entry.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Self-hosting on Linux: a practical evaluation plan

Running the tracker yourself can support data-control and customization goals, but you become responsible for the service. Treat deployment as an operations decision, not only a software choice.

  1. Define the record. Write down whether a ticket represents a defect, a customer conversation, an internal request, a project task, or several of these. List required fields, states, roles, and retention rules.
  2. Choose a deployment boundary. Decide whether the system will run on an internal server, a Linux VPS for issue tracking, or a managed self-hosting arrangement. Size storage for attachments, database growth, logs, and backups rather than only the application package.
  3. Verify prerequisites. Check the project’s current Linux installation instructions, supported runtime and database versions, reverse-proxy requirements, mail delivery, background workers, and required extensions. These change between releases.
  4. Install a disposable pilot. Use a separate hostname and test database. Import a representative sample instead of immediately moving production records.
  5. Exercise the complete workflow. Create, assign, escalate, comment, attach files, change priority, resolve, reopen, search, report, and export tickets. Include both an ordinary user and an administrator in the test.
  6. Test identity and access. Verify local accounts, password policy, role boundaries, and any SSO or directory integration available in the edition you selected. Confirm that customers, agents, developers, and administrators see only what they should.
  7. Prove backup and restore. Back up the database, uploaded files, configuration, secrets, and any repository data. Perform a restore to a clean Linux host and record the time and manual steps required.
  8. Plan upgrades. Read the release notes, test upgrades on a copy, confirm plugin compatibility, and keep a rollback path. Never treat an application upgrade as a substitute for a tested restore.
  9. Document ownership. Assign responsibility for patching, monitoring, mail delivery, user administration, data export, and incident response. A free license does not remove these recurring tasks.

How to compare candidates fairly

Build a short list of three systems from different categories only when your workflow is genuinely uncertain. For example, compare one bug-first tracker with one project platform and one service desk if a development organization also handles customer requests. Give each product the same test data and acceptance criteria.

  • Workflow fit: Can a new request move from intake to closure without manual workarounds?
  • Information model: Are versions, components, customers, projects, cycles, SLAs, or dependencies represented naturally?
  • Search and reporting: Can a manager answer backlog, aging, ownership, and overdue questions without exporting to another system?
  • Permissions: Can you separate internal notes, customer-visible comments, project membership, and administration?
  • Integration: Can the tracker connect to the repository, mail system, identity provider, monitoring stack, and import/export formats you already use?
  • Operations: Are installation, upgrades, backups, restore, logging, and monitoring practical for your Linux team?
  • Edition boundaries: Is each required feature in the free self-hosted edition, or does it depend on a hosted tier or paid add-on?

Common selection mistakes and their fixes

Choosing by popularity instead of process

A well-known project platform can still be a poor helpdesk, and a compact bug tracker can become painful when customers need portals and SLA queues. Start with the ticket lifecycle and select the category that matches it.

Assuming every open-source feature is included

Read the edition matrix for authentication, reporting, automation, integrations, and hosted services. Record the exact edition and version in your architecture notes so a later upgrade does not silently change the feature set.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring the cost of administration

License fees are only one part of ownership. Include Linux hosting, storage, mail delivery, monitoring, patching, backups, restore tests, and staff time in the decision. Managed self-hosting can reduce routine work, but verify what the provider actually operates and how you retain control of your data.

Migrating before proving restore

An import that succeeds is not a disaster-recovery plan. Restore a full backup to another host, verify attachments and history, and time the procedure before switching users.

Over-customizing the first release

Start with the smallest workflow that answers your reporting and accountability needs. Add fields, states, plugins, and automations only after users demonstrate a recurring requirement; every customization increases upgrade and training work.

A practical shortlist by team type

  • Software defect triage: Begin with Bugzilla, MantisBT, Trac, Roundup, or Flyspray. Add Fossil when repository and wiki integration are central.
  • Customer support: Begin with Zammad, osTicket, Znuny, OpenSupports, FlowInquiry, or Qisutu. Consider Request Tracker or Eventum when you need more adaptable queues and processes.
  • Cross-team project delivery: Begin with OpenProject, Plane, or Redmine. Evaluate Phorge when collaboration is strongly tied to software development.
  • Enterprise-style flexibility: Put Request Tracker and Redmine on the first evaluation list, then test administration effort against your available staff.

The best choice is the one whose default workflow matches your work closely enough that users will keep accurate records, while its Linux deployment and recovery requirements remain realistic for the team operating it.
