wkhtmltopdf can still serve controlled, established HTML-to-PDF workflows, but it is a legacy renderer—not a current browser substitute. It uses Qt WebKit; the project lists version 0.12.6, released June 11, 2020, as its stable series, and its GitHub repository has been archived read-only since January 2, 2023. Results can vary with the build, operating system, fonts, and Qt patches, while official sources provide no current, controlled speed comparison. Keep it only when your actual documents render correctly and you can safely control the input; for a new workflow, evaluate a renderer suited to your JavaScript and security needs.
What wkhtmltopdf does—and what this review can establish
wkhtmltopdf is an open-source command-line program that converts HTML pages into PDF documents. Its companion, wkhtmltoimage, converts HTML to image formats. Both use Qt WebKit, so their output reflects an older browser engine rather than the behavior of a current Chrome-based browser. The project overview describes the tools and their settings at wkhtmltopdf.org.
The project’s downloads page identifies 0.12.6 as the stable series and gives June 11, 2020 as its release date. That is the project page’s stated stable release, not proof that all downstream packages or forks are identical. The upstream GitHub repository has been archived read-only since January 2, 2023. Those dates make version and package provenance important when deciding whether existing output can be trusted.
How good is wkhtmltopdf’s rendering?
There is no single, meaningful “HTML support” score for wkhtmltopdf. A page’s result depends on the CSS and JavaScript it uses, its fonts and images, page-break needs, and the particular binary and runtime libraries. The aging Qt WebKit engine can produce output that differs from a contemporary browser, especially for pages whose content depends on dynamic JavaScript. The project maintainer specifically points to Puppeteer for dynamic-JavaScript conversion; that is a use-case recommendation, not a measured quality ranking. See the project status discussion.

Packaging is another source of variation. Some builds include wkhtmltopdf’s Qt patches, which provide features absent from some distribution builds. The official downloads page warns that builds compiled without those patches behave differently. Fonts, fontconfig and FreeType, operating-system libraries, and package choices can also change the result. A useful evaluation should record at least:
- The exact version and binary source, and whether it reports patched Qt.
- The operating system and version, plus relevant runtime libraries.
- Installed fonts and font configuration.
- The HTML, CSS, JavaScript, images, and exact conversion flags used.
- Expected page breaks, headers, footers, links, and any table of contents.
For a reproducible rendering check, preserve a representative HTML fixture and run it with the exact deployment binary. Compare its PDF to the intended output, including page count, text placement, image loading, and page breaks. The project’s 0.12.6 command-line manual documents the available options, but flags cannot guarantee that an arbitrary modern web application will finish rendering as intended.
Useful PDF features and their limits
The command-line interface supports multi-page inputs, cover pages, generated tables of contents, headers and footers, JavaScript wait controls, and smart shrinking controls. Feature availability can depend on whether a build includes the patched Qt. Consult the manual for the exact options and syntax for your installed build.
Rank #2
JavaScript waiting
The manual documents --javascript-delay and --window-status for waiting on page scripts. These options can help when a page needs extra time or signals completion through a window status value. They are timing and coordination controls, not a guarantee that all scripts, API calls, or client-rendered components will succeed.
Smart shrinking and pagination
The manual describes a default smart-shrinking strategy and an option to disable it. Shrinking may affect sizing and layout; disabling it changes that trade-off but does not repair unsupported or differently interpreted CSS. Verify page dimensions, margins, and page breaks against the exact build you intend to deploy.
Build-specific behavior matters
If an option is missing or behaves differently from documentation examples, check the package source and patched-Qt status before changing your HTML. A distribution package and a project-provided build may not expose identical behavior. The official downloads page notes the distinction.
Is wkhtmltopdf fast?
The official project material reviewed does not publish a current, controlled comparison that establishes wkhtmltopdf as faster or slower than Chrome, Puppeteer, or another renderer. A general speed verdict would therefore be unsupported. Performance depends on the document, asset loading, wait strategy, fonts, output size, process startup, and host environment.
If throughput matters, benchmark the workload you actually run. Keep the binary and operating system fixed, use representative pages and assets, record cold and warm process behavior, output page counts and wait settings, repeat runs, and report both the median and spread. Compare with a maintained alternative under the same conditions; do not infer a general ranking from one page or an anecdotal timing.
Is wkhtmltopdf safe for untrusted HTML?
No. The project’s downloads page gives a strong warning: “Do not use wkhtmltopdf with any untrusted HTML – be sure to sanitize any user-supplied HTML/JS, otherwise it can lead to complete takeover of the server it is running on!” Treat arbitrary user-supplied HTML or JavaScript as unsafe input, not as a routine conversion job.
Rank #4
In a 2020 status discussion, maintainer Ashish Kulkarni explained that wkhtmltopdf depends on WebKit1’s in-process API and stated that Qt 4 had not been supported since 2015 and its WebKit had not been updated since 2012. These are dated maintainer statements, not an inventory of every later fork or package.
The project’s AppArmor guidance recommends confinement as an additional safeguard. It explains that blocking local file access alone may not be enough if a prebuilt binary has a vulnerability; it also distinguishes AppArmor-supported distributions from Red Hat-family systems using SELinux. Confinement can reduce exposure, but does not make rendering arbitrary untrusted HTML safe. Avoid that input model; where conversion of external material is unavoidable, sanitize it and isolate the renderer with operating-system controls.
Who should keep using wkhtmltopdf?
wkhtmltopdf is most defensible in a legacy or controlled workflow that already relies on its CLI or established PDF features, where the HTML is controlled and output has been verified on the exact production build. It is a weaker choice for a new system that must closely match a modern browser or render complex client-side applications.
- Keep it conditionally when existing reports render acceptably, dependencies are understood, and input is trusted and controlled.
- Evaluate another renderer when dynamic JavaScript or contemporary browser behavior is central.
- Do not feed it untrusted HTML as a normal server-side conversion path.
- Re-test before changing packages, since Qt patches, fonts, libraries, and OS differences can alter output.
What alternatives should you evaluate?
The maintainer suggests WeasyPrint or the commercial tool Prince for report generation when HTML is controlled, and Puppeteer for pages that rely on dynamic JavaScript. These are use-case suggestions, not independent measurements of speed or overall output quality. Compare candidates using your own documents and requirements: CSS and JavaScript behavior, pagination and PDF features, installation dependencies and fonts, operating-system compatibility, input security, and license and operating cost.
If your requirement is specifically to capture a website as an image or PDF through an API rather than operate a local HTML-to-PDF binary, try ScreenshotNeo first: it removes consent banners, popups, and chat widgets before capture and bills only clean shots. Its API and MCP server are a different workflow from wkhtmltopdf, not a drop-in claim about equivalent rendering.
Or skip the browser setup
For a website screenshot or PDF through an API, make one request. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
- Cookie banners are accepted and removed before the shot, alongside 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off.
- Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing; response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.
- An MCP server provides
take_screenshot,get_page_info, andcapture_pdftools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. - The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Is wkhtmltopdf still maintained?
The project’s downloads page lists 0.12.6, released June 11, 2020, as its stable series, and the upstream GitHub repository has been archived read-only since January 2, 2023. A downstream fork or package may differ.
Is wkhtmltopdf faster than Chrome or Puppeteer?
The official sources cited here do not establish a controlled speed comparison. Measure your representative workload on the exact builds and environment you plan to use.
Does disabling smart shrinking fix layout differences?
Not necessarily. It changes a scaling behavior, but cannot ensure support for every CSS or JavaScript feature or make a modern application render correctly.
