Lifetime cloud storage deals appeal to privacy-conscious users because they promise predictable costs and, in some cases, encryption designed to limit provider access to files. But “lifetime” is a provider-defined promise, not a standard duration, and privacy claims do not by themselves guarantee continued access or safe recovery. Before paying, check the contract, encryption and key-control details, shutdown and export terms—and keep a separate copy of important files.
Why privacy-conscious users consider lifetime storage
A one-time payment can make long-term storage costs easier to anticipate than a recurring subscription. The appeal grows when a provider also says that files are encrypted before upload or that the provider cannot access the encryption key. Those features may reduce exposure to the storage company, but they answer different questions: price predictability is not a guarantee of service continuity, and encryption claims need to be assessed on their design and evidence.
“Lifetime” has no universal duration across cloud-storage offers. The exact promise comes from the provider’s terms, including what happens if the business closes, changes ownership, or alters its service.
What “lifetime” means depends on the contract
FOREVER.com offers one example of a specifically defined period: its current Terms of Service describe a guarantee lasting for the account owner’s lifetime and 100 years thereafter, subject to those terms. The terms also describe a guarantee fund. This is a provider-specific arrangement, not a definition that applies to other lifetime plans. Read FOREVER’s Terms of Service.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
For any offer, look for the legal definition of the period and the provider’s obligations if service is discontinued. A marketing label alone does not tell you whether access, support, or downloads continue after a closure or acquisition.
How to evaluate the privacy claims
Encryption and control of the keys
Encryption is most protective against provider access when files are encrypted on your device before upload and the provider does not hold the key. That design also makes recovery important: if only you control the key and lose it, the provider may not be able to restore access. Confirm what is encrypted, when encryption occurs, who can access the key, and what the password- or key-loss process allows.

- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
LifetimeCloud says its service uses AES-256-GCM encryption in the browser and does not store the key. Internxt advertises end-to-end and zero-knowledge encryption, as well as post-quantum encryption. These are statements from the providers; independent verification of the named security claims was not established in the sources cited here. Treat marketing descriptions as claims, not as proof of security or a guarantee against future cryptographic risks. LifetimeCloud’s security page and Internxt’s lifetime plans describe their respective offers.
Jurisdiction and data location
Where files are stored and which legal terms apply are separate questions from whether files are encrypted. LifetimeCloud says its data is stored in the EU. That is a provider statement about location, not a complete assessment of applicable law, security, or how a particular account’s data is handled. Read the provider’s terms and privacy information alongside its encryption description.

What happens if the service closes?
A one-time payment does not eliminate the risk that a service will be discontinued. TechRadar’s June 2026 guide notes that multiple services have removed lifetime offers and raises the practical question of what happens if a company goes bankrupt or is acquired. Its advice to retain local copies is useful continuity guidance, though the guide is editorial coverage rather than a legal authority or provider audit. Read TechRadar’s lifetime cloud storage guide.
Check the provider’s binding terms for closure rights and the time available to retrieve your data. LifetimeCloud’s security page says it will provide at least 90 days’ notice and allow downloads during that period. Verify whether the binding terms make that promise and how it works for your account; a statement on a security page is not a substitute for the contract.

Questions to answer before buying
- Duration: How do the terms define “lifetime,” and what happens after a closure, acquisition, or plan change?
- Exit and recovery: Is there a guaranteed notice period? How long will downloads remain available, and can you export files in usable form?
- Encryption: Are files encrypted before upload? Who holds the keys, and what happens if you forget a password or lose a key?
- Location and legal terms: Where does the provider say data is stored, and what do its privacy policy and contract say?
- Practical limits: Confirm the storage allowance, sync and sharing features, and any conditions or upgrade requirements in the specific plan.
- Evidence: Distinguish a provider’s own security description from an independent audit or verification. No independent verification for the security claims above was established in the sources cited here.
Keep another copy of important files
Do not make a lifetime cloud account the only home for important documents, photographs, or work. Keep a separate local copy on a device such as an external SSD, USB flash drive, or SD card, and make sure you can access the files without relying on the cloud provider. These are physical backup options, not replacements for cloud storage or a complete backup strategy. TechRadar’s guide also recommends keeping local copies in light of discontinuation risk. See its discussion of local backup options.
