Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteAn LED TV is usually an LCD television that uses light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to illuminate its screen. The LCD panel controls how much of that light passes through each pixel and its color filters to create the picture. Despite the name, a conventional LED TV is not usually a screen made of individual LEDs that each form one image pixel.
What does “LED TV” mean?
In everyday product descriptions, “LED TV” generally means an LCD television with an LED backlight. The LEDs provide light behind or around the liquid-crystal panel; the panel shapes that light into the image. RTINGS also describes LED TVs as LED-backlit LCD televisions.
This is why “LED vs. LCD” can be misleading: they are not necessarily two different screen technologies. LCD describes the image-forming panel, while LED describes the type of backlight used in the common category called an LED TV.
How does an LED TV make a picture?
The backlight supplies light, and the LCD layer controls how much passes through its pixels. Color filters help produce the colors you see. The TV combines these elements to display the image; the backlight itself does not create a separate image pixel for each LED.

How do LED backlights differ?
LED TVs can place and control their backlights in different ways. These terms describe the illumination system, not a guarantee of how good the finished picture will look.
Edge-lit
In an edge-lit TV, LEDs sit around the screen’s edges and send light across the panel. The specific design and resulting screen uniformity vary by model.
Direct-lit and full-array local dimming
A direct-lit TV places LEDs behind the LCD panel. In a full-array local-dimming design, groups of those LEDs are controlled in separate zones. The TV can dim zones behind darker parts of a scene while keeping others bright.

Each zone serves many pixels rather than one. As a result, light from a bright object or subtitle can spill into nearby dark areas—a visible effect called blooming. Its severity depends on the particular television and its settings. Sharp explains these backlighting approaches and local dimming.
Mini-LED
Mini-LED uses smaller, denser LEDs in the backlight. This can allow more precise light control, but the name alone does not tell you a model’s zone count, dimming quality, or screen uniformity. Compare the actual TV’s performance rather than treating “Mini-LED” as a fixed picture-quality rating. Sony’s backlighting overview describes these approaches.
LED vs. OLED vs. QLED: what is the difference?
| Label | How it makes or improves the picture | What the label does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| LED TV | Usually an LCD panel illuminated by an LED backlight. | It does not usually mean one visible LED per image pixel. |
| OLED | Pixels produce their own light and can turn off individually, so the display needs no separate backlight. | It is not another name for an LED-backlit LCD. |
| QLED | Generally an LCD television with an LED backlight and a quantum-dot layer to improve color. | It is not the same as OLED. |
Samsung’s display guide distinguishes LED, OLED, and QLED. QD-OLED is a separate term from QLED; do not assume that the similar names describe the same display design.

How should you compare LED TVs?
Labels are a useful starting point, not a verdict. Models within the same display category can perform differently, so compare reviews or measurements for the exact TV you are considering. RTINGS cautions that panel category alone does not determine a model’s performance.
Match the specific television to your room and how you watch:
Quick Recap
- Bright room: Compare brightness performance for the exact model.
- Dark scenes: Look at contrast and whether local dimming produces visible blooming.
- Wide seating: Check how the picture changes at off-center viewing angles.
- Screen size: Consider both the size of the room and your viewing distance; Sony identifies screen size and viewing distance as selection factors.
- Gaming or motion: Compare the features and performance relevant to the games or content you watch, rather than assuming the backlight label answers those questions.
