An old dual-band router can add a separate Wi-Fi name for smart-home devices, provided it supports access point (AP) mode or can be configured for that role. Connect it to your main router with Ethernet and configure the IoT Wi-Fi on the old unit. But a different SSID is only a different wireless network name—not proof that IoT devices are blocked from your main network.

What this setup does—and what it doesn’t

In AP mode, the old router provides Wi-Fi to devices on an existing wired network; the main router continues to act as the router. TP-Link describes this use in its guide, “How to Set Up a TP-Link Router as an Access Point.” The documented connection between the main router and the access point is Ethernet.

You can give the old router’s Wi-Fi a distinct name, such as “Home-IoT,” and connect smart devices to it. That can keep them off the primary Wi-Fi name and make it easier to see which wireless network they use. It does not, on its own, establish a security boundary: depending on the model, mode and settings, devices on that Wi-Fi may still reach the main LAN or one another.

Check the old router before changing its settings

Look for a supported AP mode

Find the exact model number and consult its manual or administration interface for “Operation Mode,” “Access Point,” or similar wording. If the manufacturer provides an AP-mode setup, use that model-specific procedure. Port choice and configuration differ: a guided mode may specify a particular port, while a manual setup may use a LAN-to-LAN connection.

Check which features AP mode removes

Changing modes can disable functions that depend on the old router acting as a gateway. TP-Link’s AP-versus-router comparison lists parental controls, QoS, bandwidth control, NAT forwarding, IPv6 and VPN among features unavailable in AP mode on applicable models, and notes that feature availability varies by model. Check the documentation for your unit before switching; do not assume this list applies to every manufacturer.

Configure the wired connection and access-point mode

  1. Connect the main router and the old router with Ethernet. TP-Link’s documented setup uses a cable from the main router to the access point. Use the port specified by the old router’s AP-mode instructions. If you need a cable, an Ethernet cable is the relevant item; use one you already have if it is suitable.
  2. Enable the manufacturer’s AP mode, if available. Follow the exact model’s interface and port instructions, then save the change. Do not combine a guided procedure with generic manual steps unless the manufacturer says to do so.
  3. If there is no AP-mode setting, check for a model-specific manual procedure. TP-Link documents a manual path for devices without an operation-mode switch: set the old router’s LAN IP address on the main router’s subnet and outside the main router’s DHCP range, disable DHCP on the old router, and connect the routers LAN-to-LAN. These are TP-Link instructions for the described setup, not universal steps for every router. Use your own manufacturer’s guide before applying them.
  4. Reconnect to the network and confirm the setup. Check the old router’s interface and the main router’s client list to confirm that the access point and connected devices appear as expected. If the old router is no longer reachable at its former address, use the address assigned or configured for it rather than assuming it failed.

TP-Link’s setup guidance recommends AP mode as a way to avoid creating double NAT when adding its router behind an existing router. That is a network-setup consideration, not evidence that IoT clients are isolated.

Create a recognizable IoT Wi-Fi network

On the old router, configure the wireless network name (SSID) and password using the controls available for its model. Choose a distinct name that helps you recognize the network, and use a strong password. If the router supports both bands, check which bands and security settings it offers and whether your devices can join them; dual-band hardware does not guarantee that every IoT device supports both bands.

After connecting a device, verify in the router interface or client list that it joined the intended access point. A separate SSID is useful for organization, but do not describe the network as “segmented” or “isolated” unless the device’s configuration actually enforces the separation you need.

Verify the boundary instead of trusting the SSID

Inspect the old router’s guest-network and local-network access settings, then verify behavior for the actual operating mode and firmware. TP-Link warns in its AP-mode comparison that, on applicable models, “the Guest Network is no longer isolated from the main network.” Its guest-network documentation also describes configurable local-access and peer-to-peer settings. Guest-network labels and controls therefore do not guarantee the same behavior across models or modes.

  • Main-LAN access: Determine whether a device on the IoT Wi-Fi can reach devices or services on the primary LAN. Check any setting controlling access to the local network, and verify the result for your equipment.
  • Device-to-device access: Determine whether IoT clients can reach one another. This is a different question from whether they can reach the main LAN.
  • Wired clients: If you are relying on VLAN controls, check whether the boundary covers wired devices as well as wireless ones.

Testing can reveal whether a particular path is reachable, but a successful test of one service or device does not prove that every route is blocked. For a security boundary, rely on documented features and configuration—not only on the SSID name or a single test.

AP isolation and VLANs are different controls

AP or client isolation can prevent clients on the same wireless network from communicating with each other. VLANs can separate supported networks or SSIDs, but support and scope depend on the equipment. TP-Link’s cited AP isolation and VLAN details apply to its Pharos products, not to all consumer routers; that documentation also notes that its wired clients are not included in the described VLAN separation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you need IoT devices blocked from the main LAN, confirm that the router and the rest of your network support the required isolation or VLAN configuration, and that the boundary includes the devices you intend to protect. A guest SSID or AP mode alone is not enough to establish this.

What to expect from reusing the router

The old router can add Wi-Fi coverage and a separate wireless network name without replacing the main router. Whether it can also enforce useful isolation depends on its model, firmware, operating mode and available network controls. If it lacks a configuration you need, a compatible AP or other network equipment may be an alternative; replacement hardware is not automatically necessary just to provide another Wi-Fi network.
