That installer was an MSI package that made Teams available to users on a Windows computer. Classic Teams was officially retired on July 22, 2025, so it is no longer the correct choice for a new deployment.
Microsoft’s current machine-wide deployment method is TeamsBootstrapper.exe. It provisions the new Teams MSIX package for all existing and future users on the computer.
What was the Teams Machine-Wide Installer?
The classic Teams Machine-Wide Installer was an MSI-based deployment component. An administrator installed it once on a computer, and Teams could then install into each user’s profile when that user signed in.
It was commonly associated with commands such as:
msiexec /i Teams_windows_x64.msi ALLUSER=1 ALLUSERS=1 /quietThat approach applies to classic Teams, not the current client. The classic MSI used a path similar to:

TeamsBootstrapper.exe is Microsoft’s current machine-wide deployment tool. It is a lightweight, headless installer with a command-line interface. It downloads and provisions the latest Teams MSIX package for:
- Users already present on the computer.
- Users added to the computer later.
- Multi-user and managed Windows environments, when the host meets Microsoft’s requirements.
If another Teams version is already provisioned, the newly provisioned version replaces it. The bootstrapper also makes registry changes required for Teams to interoperate with Office and other applications.
Unlike a traditional setup wizard, it does not present a user-facing installation window. The command prompt reports whether the operation succeeded or failed.
Requirements before installing

Install the current Teams client for every user
- Download
TeamsBootstrapper.exefrom Microsoft. - Place it in a local folder, such as
C:TempTeams. - Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Change to the folder containing the file:
cd /d C:TempTeams- Provision the latest Teams package:
TeamsBootstrapper.exe -pFor example, if you are already in the folder containing the executable, you can run:
. teamsbootstrapper.exe -pThe command returns a success or failure status. Provisioning Teams does not automatically launch it for every user. After a user launches Teams for the first time, AppX registration completes for that user. The user can then enable autostart in Teams Settings > General or through Windows settings.

Use an offline MSIX package
The normal -p command downloads the latest package online. For computers with limited internet access or for deployments where you want to reduce repeated initial downloads, download the matching MSIX package separately.
Microsoft provides separate MSIX packages for:
- x86
- x64
- ARM64
Use the package that matches the target computer’s processor architecture. With the bootstrapper and MSIX in place, run:
TeamsBootstrapper.exe -p -o "C:TempTeamsMSTeams-x64.msix"The MSIX can also be on a UNC share:
TeamsBootstrapper.exe -p -o "\servershareTeamsMSTeams-x64.msix"Use a UNC path rather than a mapped remote drive. The account running the command must be able to access the share, and the path must be valid from the target computer.
Deploy it across an organization
The bootstrapper is suitable for software distribution systems because it has no interactive setup wizard. Microsoft’s documented sequence is:
- Download the latest bootstrapper.
- Package or distribute it with Microsoft Intune, Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager, Group Policy, or another software-distribution platform.
- Run it with administrative rights on each target computer.
The installation command for an online deployment is:
TeamsBootstrapper.exe -pFor an offline package, distribute both files or make the MSIX available through a reachable UNC share, then run the -p -o command.

Do not build new deployment packages around the old MSI or around assumptions that Teams is installed as a single shared Teams.exe under Program Files (x86). The current executable names are ms-teams.exe and ms-teamsupdate.exe. Firewall, proxy, split-tunnel, AppLocker, and antivirus rules should use the new application and WindowsApps locations. Because the versioned WindowsApps directory changes during updates, hard-coding one versioned executable path can cause a later update to break the rule.
Remove the current Teams installation for all users
To unregister and deprovision the new Teams installation for all users, run the bootstrapper with -x from an elevated Command Prompt:
TeamsBootstrapper.exe -xThis operation also deletes the Teams user profile and cache as part of deprovisioning. Confirm that you have deployed a replacement or intend to remove Teams before running it on shared computers.
Remove the old Teams Machine-Wide Installer
If an administrator independently deployed the classic Teams Machine-Wide Installer, Microsoft says it must be proactively removed with the organization’s existing deployment tools. Deploy the new Teams client machine-wide first; otherwise users may be left without a Teams client.

MsiExec.exe -x {731F6BAA-A986-45A4-8936-7C3AAAAA760B} /quietFor the documented 64-bit installer example:
MsiExec.exe -x {39AF0813-FA7B-4860-ADBE-93B9B214914} /quietUse the product code that matches the classic installer deployed in your environment. In Intune, Microsoft’s packaging route is Devices > Windows > Windows Apps > Add > Windows app (Win32). Select App package file, configure a detection rule, choose Manually configure detection rules, select Add > File, and specify the MSI removal command as the uninstall command.
Do not simply delete the old Teams folder on a multi-user computer. Microsoft warns that manual deletion can leave residual files and does not provide a complete uninstall.
Troubleshoot installation failures

For AppX deployment details, open Event Viewer (Local) > Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows, then review:
- AppxPackagingOM > Microsoft-Windows-AppxPackaging/Operational
- AppXDeployment-Server > Microsoft-Windows-AppXDeploymentServer/Operational

Get-AppxLogSpecial considerations for VDI
Teams’ local package data is stored below the user’s local AppData package path. Folder redirection and roaming user profiles are not supported for this data unless a complementary profile-management product is used.
For non-persistent VDI, Microsoft documents this registry value for disabling Teams automatic updates on builds newer than 23306.3314.2555.9628:

Old advice that should not be followed
- “Use the MSI with
ALLUSER=1 ALLUSERS=1for current Teams.” That is classic-Teams guidance. - “Teams is shared from
Program Files (x86).” That describes the classic MSI, not the current MSIX package. - “The classic Machine-Wide Installer automatically updates Teams for everyone.” Microsoft documented classic MSI deployments with automatic updating disabled when installed machine-wide.
- “The classic removal timer can be configured.” Microsoft says its timer is not configurable.
- “Deleting the Teams folder removes it for all users.” Folder deletion can leave remnants and is not a complete multi-user uninstall.

The term refers to the classic Teams MSI deployment mechanism. Classic Teams was retired on July 22, 2025. New deployments should use TeamsBootstrapper.exe and the new Teams MSIX package.

The name Teams Machine-Wide Installer now mainly identifies an obsolete classic-Teams MSI. For a supported current deployment, download the latest TeamsBootstrapper.exe, run TeamsBootstrapper.exe -p as administrator, and distribute that command through Intune, Configuration Manager, Group Policy, or another management platform. Use the offline -o option when required, and remove the classic MSI only after the new client is provisioned.
