Choose PlayStation Portal if you want a dedicated handheld with an 8-inch screen and integrated DualSense-style controls; choose a phone and controller if you already own compatible gear and prefer a flexible setup. Both can stream games from a console, but Portal also offers cloud streaming for eligible games to PlayStation Plus Premium members. You do not need Premium for ordinary Remote Play from a paired PS5.

These bandwidth figures are Sony’s guidance, not a promise of smooth play. Sony has not published a controlled head-to-head test establishing that Portal has lower latency or better image quality than a phone setup.
What the Portal gives you
A dedicated screen and familiar controls
Portal has an 8-inch LCD with 1080p resolution and supports gameplay up to 60 frames per second, according to Sony’s PlayStation Direct listing. Its integrated controls follow the DualSense layout. Haptic feedback and adaptive triggers are available in games that support those features; they are not guaranteed in every game.
Because the screen and controls are built into one device, you do not have to mount a phone or pair a separate controller each time. That convenience comes with a trade-off: Portal is a separate device dedicated to Remote Play and Portal cloud streaming, rather than a phone you can use for other everyday tasks.

It is not a standalone PS5
For ordinary Remote Play, Portal streams compatible games installed on a paired PS5. It does not run those games independently. Sony’s Portal product page also describes supported audio options: a wired headset through the 3.5 mm jack or PlayStation Link wireless devices, including PULSE Explore earbuds and the PULSE Elite headset. The cited product information does not establish ordinary Bluetooth audio support.
What a phone and controller give you
More flexibility and broader console support
Sony’s Remote Play overview supports streaming to phones from PS5 and PS4. The phone app is a practical choice if you already have a suitable phone and controller, or want to use the phone for tasks beyond gaming. A controller may attach directly to the phone or connect separately, depending on the model.

A compatible controller makes games designed for physical controls easier to play than on-screen controls alone. Sony documents support for select DualSense and DUALSHOCK 4 controllers, and lists the Backbone One – PlayStation Edition as a compatible phone-controller option. Check the exact phone, controller revision, connector, and physical fit before buying: compatibility is not universal.

These requirements come from Sony’s US Remote Play overview. Backbone’s compatibility FAQ adds that Sony’s Android compatibility list currently recognizes only the Backbone One – PlayStation Edition for official PS Remote Play. Check the latest compatibility details before choosing a specific phone or controller.
Cloud streaming is Portal’s key extra
Portal’s cloud-streaming option is distinct from Remote Play. Sony announced its launch on November 5, 2025: PlayStation Plus Premium members can stream selected digital PS5 games in their library and hundreds of compatible catalog games without connecting to a PS5 through Remote Play. The available games depend on region, country, and time, and individual title eligibility applies. See Sony’s launch announcement for the service details.

This can make Portal the better fit if you want to play eligible games while your PS5 is unavailable, off, or being used by someone else. The phone Remote Play setup documented by Sony streams from a PS5 or PS4; the cited official mobile documentation does not describe an equivalent phone-app cloud-streaming feature.

Sony says Remote Play requires a connection of at least 5 Mbps and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. Those figures apply as guidance, not a guarantee. Sony notes that experience varies with network conditions. In practice, home upload capacity, Wi-Fi quality and congestion, distance from the router, mobile coverage, and device behavior can all affect a session; there is no cited controlled comparison showing one setup always performs better.

Sony warns that “Remote Play uses a lot more data than most video streaming services.” If you play over cellular data, check your carrier allowance and charges before starting a session. Sony’s mobile Remote Play instructions include this warning.

Set up Remote Play on a phone
- Confirm compatibility: Check the phone’s operating system against Sony’s requirements above, and make sure the controller connects to the phone and fits if it attaches directly.
- Enable Remote Play on the console: On PS5, open Settings > System > Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play. Sony’s mobile setup instructions explain the app and console steps.
- Allow wake from Rest Mode if needed: On PS5, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode and enable Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning On PS5 from Network.
- Sign in and connect: Open the PS Remote Play app and sign in with the same PlayStation account used on the console. Sony advises confirming that the phone connects while near the console before trying to connect from outside the home.
Which setup should you choose?
- Choose Portal if an integrated handheld, larger built-in screen, and DualSense-style controls matter most, or if you want the option of eligible Portal cloud streaming with Premium.
- Choose a phone and controller if you already own compatible equipment, want to reuse your phone, or need Sony’s documented mobile Remote Play support for a PS4 as well as PS5.
- Compare the full cost first if you need to buy hardware: Portal requires its own device, while a phone setup may require a controller. No current prices are quoted here, so check current prices and compatibility for the exact products you would use.
- Test your connection before relying on either setup away from home. Sony recommends trying the phone near the console first; check Wi-Fi or mobile coverage wherever you expect to play.
