If your team already runs Playwright, its built-in screenshot assertions are the most direct place to start: they compare rendered pages with saved baselines without adding a separate visual-testing service. For a standalone self-hosted option, BackstopJS is worth evaluating, but verify its current license, maintenance, and setup in its own documentation before adopting it. Storybook teams may also compare cloud services such as Chromatic, which is a workflow alternative—not an established open-source replacement.
What Happo does—and what an alternative needs to replace
Happo describes itself as a visual-regression and accessibility-testing service. Its first-party materials say it integrates with Storybook, Cypress, Playwright, and custom integrations, and supports screenshots in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, iOS Safari, and Edge. Those are Happo’s product claims, not an independent assessment. See Happo.
Visual regression testing captures a rendered interface and compares it with a known image baseline. It complements functional tests: a test can pass while a layout, color, or spacing change still looks wrong. Replacing Happo therefore involves more than taking screenshots. Consider where capture runs, how baselines are stored and reviewed, what browsers are covered, and how the workflow controls unstable UI.
Happo’s public repository notes that the old happo.io package was merged into the happo package. If you are migrating an existing integration, use the current Happo documentation rather than copying installation steps for the old package name: Happo on GitHub.

Which alternative fits your workflow?
| Option | Best fit | Hosting and baseline workflow | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| ScreenshotNeo | Capturing website screenshots through an API or AI-agent workflow; it is not a drop-in visual-regression test runner. | Screenshot API and MCP server; supports clean screenshot captures and PDFs. | Use it to capture images where useful, but choose a separate baseline comparison and review workflow if you need visual regression testing. |
| Playwright Test screenshot assertions | Teams already using Playwright Test. | Capture and compare within the test runner; reference screenshots can live with the project’s test workflow. | Keep browser and operating-system environments consistent; stabilize dynamic content. |
| BackstopJS | Teams exploring a standalone, self-hosted visual-regression approach. | A recent Argos-authored comparison identifies it as a free, self-hosted alternative. | Confirm current maintenance, license, browser dependencies, and integrations in BackstopJS’s own documentation before adoption. |
| Chromatic | Teams organized around Storybook stories and cloud-based review. | Chromatic documents cloud captures, baseline diffs, and commit and branch metadata. | The available sources do not establish it as open-source software; JavaScript-driven animations need team-side pausing. |
| Argos | Teams investigating an open-source visual-testing platform. | Argos describes its platform as open source. | That positioning comes from Argos itself; confirm license, self-hosting scope, and current plans in its primary documentation. |
For a Playwright team, built-in assertions are the clearest starting point. BackstopJS is a candidate if you specifically want a standalone self-hosted approach, subject to first-party verification. Chromatic is a useful hosted workflow comparator for Storybook, but should not be grouped with confirmed open-source choices on the evidence available. Neither the available material nor the vendor comparison supports a neutral performance ranking.
Use Playwright’s built-in screenshot assertions
Playwright Test provides toHaveScreenshot(). On its first execution, it creates a reference screenshot; later runs compare new captures to that baseline. The capture process waits for repeated screenshots to match before saving the baseline, which helps avoid saving a transient frame. Follow the current Playwright screenshot assertions documentation for configuration details and supported options.
1. Add a visual assertion to a test
In a Playwright Test file, navigate to the page and assert its screenshot. This minimal example assumes the project already has Playwright Test configured:

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('homepage visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('homepage.png');
});
Replace the example URL with the page under test. The first run creates the reference image; subsequent runs compare against it. Keep the baseline files with the project’s normal review process so visual changes can be examined alongside code changes.
2. Update a baseline deliberately
When a visual change is intentional, review the new rendering and update snapshots explicitly with npx playwright test --update-snapshots. Avoid treating a failing diff as a reason to refresh every baseline automatically: first establish whether the change is expected or whether the capture environment or page state became unstable.
3. Reduce avoidable differences
- Standardize the runner. Playwright warns that operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power state, and headless mode can affect rendering. Run baseline creation and comparison in a consistent environment.
- Hide volatile regions. Playwright supports screenshot comparison options such as
maxDiffPixelsand a custom stylesheet. A stylesheet can hide timestamps, rotating promotions, or other regions that are intentionally variable. - Control motion and changing states. Animations, videos, live data, and asynchronous content can produce false-positive diffs. Make the page state deterministic before capture; Chromatic also notes that JavaScript-driven animations need to be paused by the team.
- Review browser and platform projects. Playwright associates baselines with browser and platform/project names. Treat changes in those environments as meaningful when reviewing or regenerating references.
Evaluate standalone and Storybook-oriented options carefully
BackstopJS: a self-hosted lead, not a fully verified recommendation
An Argos-authored 2026 comparison names BackstopJS as a free, self-hosted alternative. That is enough to put it on a shortlist, but not to establish its current project health or exact implementation requirements. Before a team commits, check BackstopJS’s own documentation and repository for active maintenance, license, supported browser versions, dependencies, and integration fit. The available material does not establish those details.

Argos: distinguish the project’s description from independent validation
The same vendor-authored comparison describes Argos as an open-source visual-testing platform. Treat “open source” as Argos’s own positioning until you verify the exact license and what can be self-hosted from its primary documentation. The comparison is not independent evidence for a neutral ranking or performance claim.
Chromatic: a cloud workflow benchmark for Storybook
Chromatic’s official documentation describes cloud capture for stories and test archives, baseline diffs, and metadata associated with commits and branches. It waits for the UI to render and pauses CSS animations, transitions, videos, and GIFs; JavaScript-driven animations must be paused by the team to avoid false-positive diffs. This is a useful model to compare against if component stories are central to your review process, but the available sources do not establish Chromatic as open-source software. See Chromatic documentation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Choose based on the operating model, not a claimed winner
- Existing test framework: If Playwright already runs your browser tests, built-in screenshot assertions keep capture and assertions in that suite. A Storybook-centered team may prefer a story-based review workflow.
- Hosting and ownership: Repository-managed baselines and a self-hosted runner give your team more infrastructure control and maintenance responsibility. A hosted service supplies cloud review infrastructure and makes the workflow dependent on that provider.
- Capture environment: Decide whether screenshots should come from your own test environment or a vendor’s standardized cloud. Differences in browser and operating system can alter pixels.
- Determinism controls: Check how the candidate handles animations, network readiness, timestamps, and unstable content; a useful baseline is only useful if captures are repeatable.
- Review process: Decide how baseline changes are proposed, approved, and tied to pull requests, and who will maintain image updates.
- Project maintenance: Verify license, recent activity, release cadence, and supported browser versions from each project’s own current sources before making an adoption decision.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot capture rather than a full visual-regression runner, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request website screenshot API and an MCP server. It is not a baseline-diff test framework; use it for capture, then pair the image with your own comparison and review process if needed.

Common issues when screenshot comparisons fail
The screenshot differs on another machine or CI runner
Rendering can vary across operating systems, browser versions, settings, hardware, and headless mode. Run baseline creation and comparisons in the same controlled environment, and treat changes to that environment as a possible cause before updating images.

The diff changes from run to run
Look for animations, live or time-based content, asynchronously loaded UI, and other unstable state. Make the page deterministic, hide intentionally variable regions with an appropriate stylesheet, and confirm that the test waits for the content it actually needs.
A baseline changed unexpectedly
Do not immediately refresh it. Review the diff and determine whether the interface changed intentionally, the capture environment shifted, or the page rendered a different state. Use --update-snapshots only after deciding the new rendering is the correct reference.
A candidate tool’s setup or license is unclear
For BackstopJS and Argos, the available comparison is not enough to settle current licensing, maintenance, or setup. Check the project’s first-party documentation and repository before choosing it or writing implementation steps around it.
