You can’t tap or swipe the built-in MacBook Pro display: Apple identifies it as a Liquid Retina XDR display, not a touchscreen, and does not describe it as OLED. For everyday Mac tasks, use the built-in Force Touch trackpad and keyboard. If you want to touch Mac windows, menus, or creative work, connect a compatible iPad with Sidecar; touch input happens on the iPad.
Can you use a MacBook Pro screen as a touchscreen?
No. Apple’s current MacBook Pro specifications call the built-in display Liquid Retina XDR and list a Force Touch trackpad as the cursor-control surface. They do not describe direct touch input on the MacBook display or identify it as OLED. A finger swipe on the screen therefore won’t scroll a page or select a Mac app control.
Use the MacBook’s built-in controls for everyday tasks
Navigate and scroll with the trackpad
The Force Touch trackpad is the native pointing surface for selecting items, moving the pointer, and using Multi-Touch gestures. For routine browsing and app navigation, move the pointer to the content and use the trackpad rather than tapping the display.
Use the keyboard for efficient commands
Keyboard shortcuts can complement trackpad navigation for common actions such as switching apps or editing text. The exact shortcuts depend on the app; consult its menu or help for the commands it supports.

Use an iPad as a touch surface for Mac work with Sidecar
Sidecar lets a compatible iPad extend the Mac desktop or mirror the Mac display. The Mac windows appear on the iPad, and touch interaction takes place on that iPad—not on the MacBook Pro screen. Apple says greatly expanded touch interaction with Mac windows and menus is available starting with iPadOS 27 and macOS 27. Earlier versions support a more limited set of gestures, so the experience depends on the software installed on both devices.

What works best: trackpad or Sidecar?
| Option | Where you interact | Best suited to | What you need |
|---|---|---|---|
| MacBook trackpad and keyboard | On the MacBook itself | Routine navigation, pointer control, and keyboard-driven work | The MacBook Pro’s built-in controls |
| Sidecar | On a separate iPad showing Mac windows | Touch interaction with Mac work, plus drawing and markup | A compatible Mac and iPad; expanded touch interaction requires iPadOS 27 and macOS 27 |
Draw and mark up Mac work with Apple Pencil
With the iPad connected through Sidecar, Apple Pencil can point, click, select, draw, edit photos, manipulate objects, write, sketch, and mark up documents. It is optional: use it when pen input suits the task, and check whether the Mac app supports the action you want. Pencil input still happens on the iPad; it does not make the MacBook display touch-sensitive.
Other ways to work across a Mac and iPad
Not every cross-device task needs Sidecar. Apple’s Continuity guide describes features with different purposes: AirDrop shares nearby content, Universal Clipboard copies and pastes between devices, Handoff continues a task on another device, and Universal Control lets one keyboard and pointer control a Mac and iPad. These features connect workflows, but none turns the MacBook Pro display into a touchscreen.
