If you hid a conversation in Microsoft Teams, it is not normally listed in a separate “Hidden chats” folder. The quickest way to restore it is to search for the person or group, open the conversation, and choose More options > Unhide.
There is one important catch: Unhide restores the conversation to your chat list, while Show hidden chat history displays its earlier messages. You may need to use both options.
Unhide a Teams chat on desktop or the web
- Open Microsoft Teams in the desktop app or at teams.microsoft.com.
- Select the Search box at the top of the Teams window.
- Type the name of the person you chatted with.
- Select the matching person from the search results. Teams opens the conversation and may indicate that its history is hidden. The person’s name can appear in italic text.
- Select More options next to the person’s name.
- Select Unhide.
- If the conversation does not immediately return to your chat list, select Filter, find the conversation, select More options, and choose Unhide.
- Select Show hidden chat history if the older messages are not visible.
Unhide versus Show hidden chat history
These are separate Teams actions:

Therefore, finding the chat in the list does not always mean that its earlier history has been restored to view.
Unhide a group chat
Search for the group-chat name and open the result. Then select More options > Unhide.

If you do not remember the group name, search for one of the participants instead. You can also search for a distinctive word or phrase from one of the group’s messages. Once the conversation opens, its More options menu should provide the chat controls.
Find a hidden meeting chat
A meeting chat can disappear for reasons other than manually hiding it. For example, declining a one-time meeting can mute and hide its chat unless you join the meeting, send a message, or are directly mentioned.
- Search Teams for the meeting title.
- Alternatively, open Calendar.
- Turn on Show declined events.
- Open the meeting and select its chat.
For a recurring meeting, declining the entire series hides the meeting chat. Declining only one occurrence generally mutes the chat rather than hiding it completely.
Unhide a chat in Teams on mobile
Microsoft’s detailed unhide workflow is primarily documented for the desktop and web versions. In the Teams mobile app:

- Open Chat and use search to find the person or group.
- Open the conversation.
- Look for the chat’s More options menu and choose Unhide, if the command is available.
If your mobile app does not show Unhide, use Teams on a desktop or in a browser and follow the search-and-unhide steps above. Teams mobile does document hiding a chat by swiping left on it and selecting Hide, but the restoration controls can vary by app version.

- Search for the chat name.
- Open the conversation.
- Add a new message or other content.
The chat should then return to the Chat tab. The work, school, and small-business versions of Teams explicitly provide More options > Unhide and Show hidden chat history, so do not assume both versions have identical menus.
If the chat still does not appear
Check whether you removed the chat history
Hide and Remove chat history are different commands:
- Hide removes a one-to-one chat from your list temporarily. You can locate it through search and unhide it.
- Remove chat history removes the one-to-one chat from your list and search results for your account. You cannot access that chat again through search.
There is no normal unhide process after you use Remove chat history. The other participant can still see the conversation.
Check whether you left the conversation
If you selected More options > Leave for a group or meeting chat, you did not merely hide it. You can no longer send messages in that conversation, and someone must invite you again before you can rejoin a group chat.
Check the Chats and channels view
Teams can show chats and channels in either a combined list or separate views. To change the layout:
- Go to the top of the chat list.
- Select More list options.
- Select Customize view.
- Choose Combined or Separate.
In Combined view, look under Chats. Teams and channels are listed separately under Teams and channels. Also check for an active filter or a collapsed section.

Make sure it was not a channel
A hidden channel is restored through a different menu:
- At the bottom of the Teams and channels list, select See all your teams or See all your teams and channels.
- Select the relevant team.
- Select See all channels.
- Select Show beside the hidden channel.
Do not use the one-to-one chat unhide process for a channel.
What if somebody sends a new message?
A hidden chat and its history remain hidden until someone posts a new message to it. A new message can make the conversation appear in your chat list, but it may not be obvious if your chat list is filtered or you use the combined Chats and channels layout. Search for the participant, group name, meeting title, or a distinctive phrase from the conversation if the new message does not make it easy to locate.

No documented /unhide command exists. Teams has a desktop-only /hide command for hiding the current chat, but restoration is performed through the interface:
Search > participant or chat name > More options > Unhide
Use the menu rather than trying to run /unhide in the search box or chat.

FAQ
Where is the Hidden chats folder in Microsoft Teams?
Teams does not provide a general Hidden chats folder in the documented workflow. Search for the person, group, meeting title, or a distinctive phrase from the conversation, then open it and select More options > Unhide.
Why can I see the chat but not its old messages?
Unhide and Show hidden chat history are separate actions. After selecting More options > Unhide, select Show hidden chat history to display previous messages.

Can I recover a Teams chat after selecting Remove chat history?
Not normally. Microsoft states that a one-to-one chat removed with Remove chat history is removed from your list and search for you, so you cannot access it again through search. The other participant may still have access to it.
How do I restore a hidden Teams channel?
Open See all your teams or See all your teams and channels, select the team, choose See all channels, and select Show beside the hidden channel.
Does a new message automatically unhide a Teams chat?
A hidden chat and its history remain hidden until someone posts a new message to it. Filters, collapsed sections, or the Chats and channels layout can still make the conversation difficult to spot. Search for it if necessary.
