It is not the same switch as Gmail’s own Smart Compose, Smart Reply, and other personalization features, so choose based on what you want to disable.
Which Gmail smart-feature setting should you turn off?
Google provides separate controls for Gmail, Chat, and Meet smart features and for Google Workspace smart features. Google identifies Gemini in Gmail as an AI-powered Workspace feature affected by turning off Smart features in Google Workspace. That disables the covered experiences; Google does not promise that every Gemini-branded button or interface element disappears from every account or Gmail version.
| Setting | What it controls | What you may lose | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smart features for Gmail, Chat, and Meet | App-level features that use content and activity to personalize Gmail, Chat, and Meet. | Examples include automatic categorization, Smart Compose, Smart Reply, and email summary cards. | Gmail on a computer: Settings > See all settings > General. |
| Smart features in Google Workspace | Workspace-wide smart experiences, including Gemini features in Gmail and other Workspace personalization. | Examples include asking Gemini to summarize content, create drafts, or find information. | Gmail’s Workspace smart-feature settings on a computer or Android. |
Google says the controls are independent: turning off one does not itself change the other. Review the Google smart-features settings guidance if you want to understand their scope before changing them.
Turn off Workspace Gemini features on a computer
- Open Gmail and select Settings > See all settings.
- On the General tab, locate Google Workspace smart features.
- Select Manage Workspace smart feature settings.
- Switch off Smart features in Google Workspace, then select Save.
If your goal is also to disable Gmail, Chat, and Meet personalization, review the separate Smart features setting on the General tab. That broader change affects conveniences such as Smart Compose and Smart Reply; it is not required to change the Workspace setting.

Turn off Workspace Gemini features in Gmail for Android
- Open the Gmail app and tap Menu > Settings.
- Select the account you want to change.
- Under General, tap Google Workspace smart features.
- Uncheck Smart features in Google Workspace.
Google’s Android Gmail instructions say this turns off AI-powered Workspace features, including Gemini in Gmail. The instructions cover the Android app; do not assume the exact menu labels are identical on other platforms.
What to expect after changing the setting
Google says smart-feature changes apply across signed-in devices and apps, but also notes that some computer changes may not show in the mobile app. If Gmail does not display a notification about the change, Google advises updating the mobile app. A visual change to a particular button or Gemini panel is not guaranteed: closing the Gemini side panel only exits the panel, and Google’s documentation does not state that this removes every Gemini interface element.

Why the setting may be missing or behave differently
Gemini feature availability varies by account type, plan, location, language, platform, and individual feature. Some Gmail Gemini features require eligible Google AI or Workspace plans, and personal-account eligibility can differ. See Google’s Gmail Gemini feature availability information for account-dependent details.
On a work or school account, an administrator may manage access or settings. If a control is unavailable or locked, contact your Workspace administrator rather than assuming you have overlooked a Gmail toggle. Google’s Gemini in Gmail computer help describes feature examples and interface details, but access still depends on account eligibility.
