Use Etsy Open API v3, not an unauthorized browser scraper. Etsy’s current API documentation says applications must not sidestep the API and that screen-scraping is not allowed. Etsy’s API Terms of Use, updated June 16, 2025, prohibit automated systems or browser extensions from accessing, analysing, or scraping Etsy data unless Etsy has expressly authorized that activity in writing. The API gives approved applications structured listing and shop resources, keyword parameters, authentication, and pagination without trying to reproduce Etsy’s consumer website.
What “scraping Etsy” should mean in a compliant application
Most developers asking how to scrape Etsy actually need one of four things: listings for a seller’s own shop, data from several consenting sellers, keyword-based listing or shop results, or a repeatable feed for an internal tool. Those jobs belong in the Etsy Open API v3. A browser automation script that loads Etsy pages, parses HTML, rotates identities, solves bot checks, or captures data from the consumer search interface is a different activity and is prohibited unless Etsy gives express written authorization.
The API is a REST interface for Etsy marketplace and shop workflows. Its reference describes listing and shop resources, keyword query parameters, authentication, OAuth scopes, and response schemas. Collection URLs accept limit and offset values, so a collector can retrieve a large result set in predictable pages instead of repeatedly downloading a web page.

Decide the scope before writing code. A one-shop inventory dashboard should not request broad seller coverage. A multi-seller product must obtain consent and use the access level Etsy approves for that purpose.
Authentication: API key first, OAuth when permissions require it
API-key authentication
HTTPS requests use an x-api-key header containing your application keystring and shared secret. Store that value in a secret manager or environment variable; never put it in browser JavaScript, a public repository, a screenshot, or a URL query string.
OAuth 2.0 for private and write operations
OAuth bearer authorization is required when an operation uses scoped private data or performs writes. Request only the scopes your approved use case needs, send the bearer token in the authorization header, and treat refresh tokens as credentials. A read-only public-data collector should not ask for write scopes merely because they exist.
Keep credentials and transport separate from collection logic
Use HTTPS for every request. Keep the endpoint, API-key value, OAuth token, page size, and output destination configurable so a policy or endpoint change does not require rewriting the pagination code.

A practical collection workflow
- Define the data boundary. Write down whether you need one seller’s shop, several consenting sellers, listing resources, shop resources, or keyword-filtered results.
- Register the matching app. Choose Seller, Personal, or Commercial Access in Etsy’s developer portal and wait for any required approval.
- Protect secrets. Put the complete
x-api-keyvalue and any OAuth token in environment variables or a secret manager. - Select documented operations. Use the current API reference to choose listing, shop, or keyword operations. Request only the fields your application uses.
- Page through collections. Send a bounded
limit, start atoffset=0, then increase the offset by the number of records returned. Stop when a page is shorter than the requested limit or the response indicates there are no more records. - Cache responsibly. Follow Etsy’s current caching and rate policies. Record when each page was fetched so you can refresh stale data instead of downloading the same records continuously.
- Ship the approved experience. Keep the app’s purpose aligned with its approval, follow branding rules, and display Etsy’s required attribution where your application presents Etsy data.
Reference implementation with configurable endpoints
Etsy’s endpoint names and scopes can evolve. The examples below deliberately read the operation URL from ETSY_ENDPOINT; set that variable to the listing, shop, or keyword operation shown in Etsy’s current API reference rather than hard-coding an undocumented path.

Products, shops, and keyword searches
Listing data
Use the documented listing resources for product-level records. Select the fields your application needs, normalize them into your own schema, and retain the source identifiers so updates can be reconciled without duplicating records.
Shop data
Shop resources support seller-focused workflows. For a seller’s own shop, a Seller App is the narrowest match. For several shops, obtain the appropriate consent and access approval rather than treating publicly visible pages as permission to collect everything.
Search data
The API reference documents keyword filtering and listing or shop resources. That does not mean the API reproduces every field or ordering visible in Etsy’s consumer search interface. Etsy’s privacy-policy material describes a search engine that returns relevant matches for a member’s query and may highlight shops or listings; it describes the consumer experience, not permission to copy it with a scraper. Personalization, ranking signals, promoted placement, and other presentation details should therefore be treated as unavailable unless the current API reference explicitly exposes them.
Pagination, caching, and data quality
Pagination that does not miss records
Persist the last successful offset and the retrieval time. If records can change while a long collection is running, expect inserts or removals to alter page boundaries; use stable identifiers and de-duplicate during ingestion. A short final page is a useful stopping signal, but also handle an explicitly empty result.

Caching and refresh policy
Etsy requires applications to follow its caching policies. Cache only what your approved use case needs, attach an expiry to each resource type, and provide a refresh path when a user requests current data. Do not turn an API response into an unbounded historical archive without checking the applicable terms.
Rate and failure handling
Respect Etsy’s rate policies and any response retry guidance. Use exponential backoff with jitter for temporary network or service failures, cap retries, and log status codes without logging API keys or bearer tokens. A successful HTTP response can still contain an application-level error, so validate the response shape before writing records.

- A configuration switch for endpoint, fields, page size, and refresh interval so API changes can be adopted safely.
- A visible compliance owner who reviews Etsy’s current API reference and Terms of Use before each significant feature release.
