To report a misleading viral video, open the specific post, use the platform’s Report control, choose the closest policy reason, and explain the claim or missing context. A report asks the platform to review the video; it does not guarantee removal. Before sharing or correcting the clip, check its source and context.
Before reporting: pause and identify what may be misleading
A clip can be edited, old, or presented without context. Its images may not prove the claim attached to them. TikTok’s misinformation guide, dated June 3, 2025, recommends checking whether the person, video, or audio is what it appears to be, whether context is missing, and whether the evidence can be traced to an original source.
Keep the post link, account name, date you saw it, and the exact statement or segment that concerns you. These details can help you describe the post, though platforms do not share one universal evidence checklist.
How to report a video on YouTube, TikTok, or Facebook
| Platform | Where to report | Details and follow-up | What the policy or outcome means |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube | Sign in, open the video, select More, then Report. Choose the reason that best fits and submit. For a Short, report from its player. | For Shorts, add a timestamp or description if useful. Check Reporting History for status. YouTube says reports are anonymous. | Reviewers assess reports against YouTube’s guidelines. Reported content is not automatically removed; content stays up if reviewers find no violation. A channel report does not trigger review of every video on that channel. |
| TikTok | Use the video’s report control and select the closest relevant reason. | TikTok says outcomes can be tracked under Report Records in Safety Center. Labels and availability may vary by region, account, or version. | TikTok prohibits misinformation that may cause significant harm; some misinformation that may cause moderate harm can be ineligible for the For You feed. Its cited policy was released April 17, 2024, and effective May 17, 2024. |
| Use the report control on the specific post or video and submit the report. | Report updates appear in Support Inbox. For some report types, Facebook offers a request for another review. | Facebook says it acts on reported content when it finds a Community Standards violation and notifies the reporter of the outcome. |
For YouTube’s step-by-step directions and reporting details, see its official reporting instructions. Its misinformation policy covers only certain misleading or deceptive content that presents a serious risk of egregious harm; educational, documentary, scientific, or artistic context may be considered. The platform’s standards are narrower than simply “a claim I think is wrong.”
#1 Best Overall
TikTok’s policy details are in its Integrity and Authenticity guidelines. Reporting is most appropriate when the video may violate the platform’s rules, not merely because you disagree with it or have an unverified suspicion.
For Instagram, X, and WhatsApp, current platform-owned step-by-step reporting flows are not established here. A World Health Organization cross-platform page links to services, but it is framed around COVID-19-era guidance; do not rely on its menu wording as current instructions. Use the relevant app’s own report control and current help information.

What to write in the report
Be specific and factual. Identify the statement, image, or timestamp that concerns you; explain briefly what appears false or what context may be missing; and include a reliable source that addresses the claim, if you have one. Avoid asserting that the creator knowingly deceived viewers unless you have evidence of intent. On YouTube Shorts, the reporting form can accept timestamps or descriptions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesReport the video itself when that video is the problem. On YouTube, reporting a channel does not cause the platform to review all of its videos; its instructions direct users to report specific videos they believe violate policy.
Rank #3
Will reporting a video get it removed?
No. Reporting requests a review, and removal depends on the platform finding a policy violation. YouTube states, “When content is reported, it’s not automatically taken down.” It also says that if reviewers find no violation, the content stays up and reporting volume will not change that decision. Facebook likewise says it acts when content violates Community Standards; some report types offer another review, but an appeal is not guaranteed to change the outcome.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check the claim separately before sharing or correcting it
A platform report is not a fact-check. Search the exact claim or a short phrase from the video, look for the original source, and compare it with reputable fact-checking work or relevant experts. FactCheck.org’s April 2025 guidance recommends searching the claim and fact-checking sites, and consulting experts when uncertainty remains.
TikTok also recommends checking source and context clues. If you cannot verify the claim, avoid amplifying it as fact. If you do post a correction, link to evidence that directly addresses the claim rather than assuming the video proves more than it shows.
