You can run Armada, a SteamOS-like Linux distribution, on certain Android gaming handhelds—but it is not Valve’s SteamOS, does not turn the device into a Steam Deck, and the official instructions do not establish that the full installation takes under five minutes. Check support for your exact handheld and display variant first. The documented SD-card route also involves flashing an image, changing bootloader files, selecting boot options, and completing Steam’s first-run setup.
What Armada does—and what it does not
Armada is a third-party Linux distribution for supported ARM64 gaming handhelds. Its software stack includes Steam, FEX x86 translation, Proton compatibility, Game Mode, and a KDE desktop. The project says FEX and CachyOS Proton 11 are configured out of the box so users can install many games through Steam; that setup is not a guarantee that every game works or performs like it does on a Steam Deck. Armada’s overview describes the experience and software.
Armada is separate from Valve’s official SteamOS. Valve’s installation and repair information concerns Valve’s distribution and supported hardware, not Armada’s compatibility list. Valve’s SteamOS support page makes that distinction important: installing Armada does not make an Android handheld a Steam Deck.
Check your exact handheld before downloading
Compatibility is model- and sometimes display-variant-specific. A shared processor or brand name is not proof that a device is supported. Armada’s official site names AYN, Retroid, and AYANEO in its support overview, but entries and variants can change with releases. Use the project’s downloads and changelog and repository to find the current guide for your exact model; the project navigation calls this “Check my handheld.”

- Confirm the precise model and screen or panel variant in the current support list.
- Check the matching SoC and device-specific boot instructions, known issues, and recovery guidance.
- Use the current dated image and installation documentation for that device rather than adapting another handheld’s steps.
The project’s website says more than 25 handhelds from AYN, Retroid, and AYANEO are supported and tested, but that is Armada’s own current count, not an independently audited measure. A brand-level count cannot establish support for your particular unit.
Understand the risk before changing boot files
Armada’s repository warns: “Armada is prototype software under active development. Installation requires bootloader changes that can brick a device, corrupt partitions, or cause data loss.” The guide adds a specific hazard: flashing ABL (Android Bootloader) files for the wrong SoC can brick the handheld. This is not equivalent to installing an Android app.

- Back up important device data before starting.
- Follow the exact model-specific instructions to back up both ABL partitions before flashing, then copy both backup images to a PC.
- Do not flash if you cannot positively match the bootloader files to your handheld’s SoC or understand the recovery steps.
What the SD-card installation involves
Armada’s documented starting route is to boot from an SD card. The guide calls for a card of 64GB or larger and recommends A2 speed for best results. It names Balena Etcher, Raspberry Pi Imager, and Win32 Disk Imager as image-writing options; experienced command-line users can use dd. These are software choices, not required paid purchases. Read the live SD-card installation guide alongside the instructions for your exact device.
- Get the current image. Download the dated Armada image applicable to your supported handheld from the official downloads page.
- Write it to the card. Use an image-writing tool to flash the image to a 64GB-or-larger SD card; A2 speed is the project’s recommendation for best results.
- Back up and flash the matching bootloader files. Boot Android and use the device’s root-script mechanism as specified in its guide. Back up both ABL partitions and copy the backups to a PC before flashing the matching ROCKNIX ABL files. The wrong SoC image can brick the device.
- Choose the device and boot mode. Enter the handheld’s boot menu and select the model and Linux boot mode as directed in its device-specific guide.
- Start Armada and set up Steam. Boot from the SD card and complete Steam’s first-run setup.
Expect waits: the installation documentation says a black screen may remain for up to 60 seconds before Steam appears, and it may recur after first-run setup. The documented sequence includes image flashing, bootloader work, boot-menu choices, and setup; it does not substantiate an end-to-end “under five minutes” claim.
