To install it, connect the Deck to the internet for first-time setup, make at least 170 GB of storage available, and install it from your Steam Library. Start with the default SteamOS settings; the available compatibility details do not require a manual Proton setting.
What you need before installing
- A Steam copy of the game: FINAL FANTASY XVI is the Windows PC release published on Steam by Square Enix.
- 170 GB of available storage: Square Enix’s Steam Store system requirements, current as of October 2026, specify 170 GB and require an SSD. Leave that much free before starting the installation.
- Internet for first-time setup: SteamDB’s Steam Deck compatibility record says an active internet connection is required during first-time setup. Connect to Wi-Fi before installing and launching for the first time.
The Steam Store lists 16 GB of RAM for both minimum and recommended Windows PC configurations. Those are PC requirements, not a Steam Deck performance benchmark. The same listing’s expectations of 30 FPS at 720p for minimum PC requirements and 60 FPS at 1080p for recommended requirements are not Steam Deck promises. Install FINAL FANTASY XVI on Steam Deck
- Connect the Steam Deck to Wi-Fi. Keep it online through the first launch so the game’s initial setup can complete.
- Press the Steam button and open Library. Find FINAL FANTASY XVI in your library.
- Select the game and choose Install.
- When prompted for an installation location, choose internal storage or a supported microSD card with at least 170 GB free. Let Steam finish downloading and installing the game.
- Return to the game’s Library page and select Play. Allow the first-time setup to finish.
Choose internal storage or a microSD card
Use internal storage if it has enough free space. A microSD card is optional, not a requirement. Valve says Steam Deck supports microSD cards and formats them for use; its FAQ identifies the file system as ext4 with casefolding. Check the card’s capacity and Steam Deck compatibility before buying it. Valve’s Steam Deck technical specifications and Steam Deck FAQ describe storage support.
Do you need to change Proton or compatibility settings?
No manual compatibility change is indicated as necessary to start. SteamDB’s record currently marks FINAL FANTASY XVI Verified and reports that it runs successfully on SteamOS. Valve describes a Verified game as one that “works great on Steam Deck, right out of the box.” Begin with the default SteamOS configuration rather than adding a Proton override, launch option, mod, or plugin. Steam Deck compatibility status is not a guarantee of a particular frame rate. The available listing and compatibility record do not establish a dependable Steam Deck performance target. If the game will not launch, first install available game and SteamOS updates, then check the compatibility details currently displayed on the game’s Steam Library page. The indexed SteamDB record is third-party status information and may change; it records a compatibility test dated August 25, 2026. View the SteamDB entry.
Can you play after the first setup without internet?
The compatibility record specifically requires an active connection for first-time setup. Valve’s general Steam Deck FAQ says installed games can be played offline unless the game itself requires internet, but the available title-specific information does not establish whether every later FINAL FANTASY XVI session works offline. Keep the Deck online for setup, and do not assume subsequent sessions are offline-capable. Read Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ.

Try the demo before buying
Steam offers a free demo covering the opening story section. Steam says that section’s save data can carry over to the full game. The demo’s separate Eikonic Challenge mode does not save data that can transfer. Check the Steam listing for the demo and save-transfer details.
