You can improve the chances that ChatGPT Search or Google AI features can find and use your pages, but there is no documented way to guarantee a citation. Start with crawl access and ordinary Search eligibility, publish useful material worth citing, then measure what traffic and visibility you can observe. Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT Search have separate systems and crawler controls; optimizing for one does not automatically optimize for the other.

What does GEO mean for a developer?

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is best treated as discoverability work for search products that generate answers and link to sources—not as a proven collection of ranking hacks. The practical work is to make pages accessible, eligible where eligibility requirements are documented, and useful enough to support an answer. Then monitor search and referral data without assuming that a single appearance proves a lasting result.

Google says its AI Search experiences are grounded in its core Search systems. ChatGPT Search has its own crawler documentation and access controls. Neither platform’s documentation establishes a universal formula or promises that a particular page will be cited.

How do I appear in Google AI Overviews or AI Mode?

Google’s current guidance is that a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a Search snippet before it can be used as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Google Search Central says: “There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.” Eligibility is not a guarantee that Google will crawl, index, or show a page.

Check the foundations first

  • Confirm that the page can be crawled: review robots.txt and any hosting, CDN, firewall, or bot-management rules that could block Google.
  • Check whether important pages are indexed and eligible for a Search snippet. Google’s Search Central guidance on AI features describes these as prerequisites.
  • Make the page’s important information available as readable text, connect it to relevant pages through internal links, and ensure it works well across devices.
  • If you use structured data, make sure it accurately represents content visible to readers and complies with the relevant guidelines. Google does not require special schema for AI Overviews or AI Mode.

Google’s May 15, 2026 guide to generative AI features recommends useful, reliable, people-first content with distinctive value. It advises against producing large numbers of pages mainly to cover query variations. AI-assisted drafting or research does not remove the need to meet Google’s Search Essentials and spam policies.

How do I get cited by ChatGPT?

For ChatGPT Search, the crawler to check is OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI identifies it as the crawler used to surface websites in ChatGPT search features and recommends allowing access if you want content to be discoverable, summarized, and cited there. This is separate from Google’s Search crawler and index.

Separate search access from model-training controls

OpenAI documents GPTBot as a separate control related to potential model training. Its crawler settings are independent, so a site can allow OAI-SearchBot while disallowing GPTBot. ChatGPT-User is used for some user-initiated page visits; OpenAI says it is not the crawler that determines Search inclusion.

After changing robots.txt, OpenAI says its Search systems may take approximately 24 hours to adjust. That timing is approximate operational guidance, not a guarantee of inclusion. Check OpenAI’s current published crawler IP ranges and inspect relevant firewall, CDN, and bot-management rules as well; robots.txt alone may not explain an access problem.

How do Google and ChatGPT differ?

These products should not be treated as one shared index or ranking system. Google documents AI Overviews and AI Mode as Search features; OpenAI documents its own crawler purposes for ChatGPT Search.

Area Google AI Overviews and AI Mode ChatGPT Search
Crawler and access controls Google Search crawling and indexing apply; review robots.txt and hosting or network controls. Google Search Central, “AI features and your website.” OAI-SearchBot is for surfacing sites in Search; GPTBot is a separate potential-training control. OpenAI, “Overview of OpenAI Crawlers.”
Documented eligibility Page must be indexed and eligible for a Search snippet; display is not guaranteed. Google Search Central, “AI features and your website.” OpenAI’s cited publisher and crawler guidance explains bot purposes and access, but does not state a comparable Search-snippet eligibility prerequisite. OpenAI, “Overview of OpenAI Crawlers” and “Publishers and Developers – FAQ.”
Content and technical guidance Follow ordinary Search fundamentals; no special AI schema or additional technical requirement for these features. Google Search Central, “Google’s Guide to Optimizing for Generative AI Features on Google Search” (May 15, 2026) and “AI features and your website.” Allowing OAI-SearchBot supports discovery, summarization, and citation; the cited OpenAI materials do not establish a universal content format that guarantees citation. OpenAI, “Publishers and Developers – FAQ.”
Measurement Use Search Console performance reporting. Google says AI-feature traffic is included in overall Web search performance reporting; its guide also identifies a Generative AI performance report for Google Search and Discover. Analytics tools can identify ChatGPT referral traffic; referral URLs include utm_source=chatgpt.com. OpenAI, “Publishers and Developers – FAQ.”
What is not guaranteed Meeting requirements does not guarantee crawl, indexation, or appearance in AI features. Google Search Central, “AI features and your website.” Allowing the crawler or observing a referral does not guarantee that a page will appear or continue to be cited. OpenAI’s cited guidance provides no universal citation guarantee.

Does llms.txt help AI search?

Google’s May 2026 guide says llms.txt has no effect on visibility in Google Search, including its AI features. The same guide says Google does not require breaking every article into tiny chunks, rewriting content for AI systems, targeting every long-tail phrasing, or seeking inauthentic mentions to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.

This is Google-specific guidance. It does not establish how every other platform handles these files or tactics. For Google, the recommendation is to make content for its intended audience and subject rather than build pages around speculative AI-specific rules. Structured data may still matter for eligibility for ordinary rich results when it follows Google’s guidelines and matches visible page content.

What kind of content is worth citing?

Google recommends material that is helpful, reliable, distinctive, and not merely a rearrangement of common information. For a developer-focused page, that means answering the actual task, explaining what readers can verify on their own sites, distinguishing platform-specific controls, and naming uncertainty where platform behavior is not documented. These are applications of Google’s published content guidance, not a recipe that guarantees citations.

  • Give the reader a concrete answer before background or terminology.
  • Explain prerequisites, configuration choices, and likely failure points in language a site operator can check.
  • Use primary documentation for platform-specific claims, and qualify claims by product, region, version, or date where relevant.
  • Keep pages focused on a real audience need instead of generating near-duplicate pages for every phrasing of a query.

How can I track ChatGPT referrals and Google visibility?

Google Search Console

Review Search performance in Search Console over time. Google’s AI-features documentation says traffic from AI features is included in the overall Web search performance report; Google’s May 2026 generative AI guide also identifies a Generative AI performance report for Google Search and Discover. Report availability and labeling may change. Compare impressions, clicks, and downstream behavior alongside changes to queries and site content rather than interpreting one data point in isolation.

Web analytics for ChatGPT

OpenAI says publishers that allow OAI-SearchBot can track referral traffic in analytics tools. ChatGPT referral URLs include utm_source=chatgpt.com, which can help distinguish that traffic. A referral shows that a visit came through ChatGPT; it does not prove that a particular site change caused the visit or that a page will continue to be cited.

What do GEO studies actually establish?

Aggarwal and coauthors’ GEO paper, accepted to KDD 2024, reports an improvement of “up to 40%” in its GEO-bench experiments. The authors also report that tactic effectiveness varies across domains. That is a maximum result from a bounded experimental setup—not a general increase for all sites, a current measurement of ChatGPT or Google AI features, or a promise of more citations.

A 2025 arXiv preprint by Chen and coauthors reports differences among the AI search services they tested in source mix, domain diversity, freshness, cross-language stability, and sensitivity to phrasing. The authors also report stronger use of earned media in their tested AI Search systems than in their Google comparison. These findings describe tested systems and conditions; they do not provide a universal ranking formula.

Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode can use query fan-out, generating related searches to gather material for a response. It also notes that systems and links may vary and that AI Overviews do not appear for every query. One manual search therefore cannot establish a stable site-wide citation pattern.

Should you buy an SEO tool to improve AI citations?

A third-party SEO tool may help organize audits or reporting, but it cannot guarantee AI citations. Google’s guidance on third-party SEO tools, services, and advice says such tools do not have access to Google’s internal ranking data and cannot guarantee performance. Start with Search Console and your site’s analytics for the platform-specific observations described above; treat other tooling as workflow support rather than a source of privileged ranking knowledge.
