Then assign a featured image to each page in the editor.
“Thumbnail” can mean the featured image representing a page, or the smaller image file WordPress creates for a particular display size. Those are related, but setting a featured image and generating its size variants are separate steps.
1. Enable featured images for pages
WordPress calls the representative image for a page or post a “Featured Image” or “Post Thumbnail.” The theme must declare support before the featured-image control appears. Add this to the theme’s setup code, commonly in functions.php:
add_theme_support( 'post-thumbnails' );WordPress documents that this support can also be scoped to particular post types. If featured images should be available only on pages, use the post-type-specific form:

add_theme_support( 'post-thumbnails', array( 'page' ) );See the WordPress Theme Handbook guide to Featured Images and Post Thumbnails. If you use a block theme, child theme, or a page-builder theme, follow its setup guidance and avoid editing a parent theme that an update may overwrite.
2. Register a thumbnail size that fits the layout
Register a named image size with add_image_size(). Choose dimensions and a crop based on the actual space where the image will appear; WordPress does not know whether your design needs a landscape card, a square tile, or a portrait crop.
add_image_size( 'page-card', 640, 400, true );Here, page-card is the size name, 640 and 400 are the target width and height in pixels, and true asks WordPress to crop to that frame. With hard cropping enabled, the default crop is centered. You can specify a crop position with an array; for example, align the crop to the top center when the subject is near the top:
add_image_size( 'page-card', 640, 400, array( 'center', 'top' ) );If you want the whole image preserved and scaled proportionally instead of cropped to a fixed frame, use false for the crop argument:

add_image_size( 'page-card', 640, 400, false );The resulting image may be smaller than one or both requested dimensions because proportional scaling preserves its aspect ratio. WordPress’s add_image_size() reference describes registration, crop options, and regeneration.
Use the default post-thumbnail size when appropriate
If the theme needs to set the default post-thumbnail dimensions rather than introduce a separate named size, use set_post_thumbnail_size() in the theme setup:
set_post_thumbnail_size( 640, 400, true );For a custom page-card layout, a named size is clearer: it lets the template ask for page-card explicitly rather than relying on a default that may serve other theme areas.
3. Request the registered size in the page template
Registering a size does not make every template display it. The template must request the same name. Inside the page loop, output the custom size like this:

}Use the same registered name in both places: add_image_size( 'page-card', ... ) and the_post_thumbnail( 'page-card' ). WordPress also provides standard size names such as thumbnail, medium, medium_large, large, full, and post-thumbnail. If the theme or page builder already registers a size suitable for the layout, you may be able to request that instead of adding another one.
4. Assign a featured image to each page
- Open the page in the WordPress editor.
- In the editor sidebar, find the Featured image control.
- Choose an image from the Media Library or upload one, then save or update the page.
- Check the page or card layout to confirm that the selected crop shows the intended subject.
The featured image is the page’s representative image; choosing it does not by itself create a newly registered image size for older uploads.
If the Featured Image control is missing
- Confirm the active theme enables
post-thumbnailssupport for pages. - Check whether the theme or page builder uses a different editing workflow or has disabled the control.
- Review the editor’s sidebar and screen options; the WordPress handbook notes that the control normally appears in the editor sidebar.
5. Regenerate image sizes for existing uploads
Adding or changing an image size affects image processing for uploads going forward. Existing Media Library files do not automatically acquire the new derivative just because the theme code changed. Regenerate those files after registering or changing a size.
Use WP-CLI
From the site environment, run:
wp media regenerateReview the command’s available options in the WP-CLI media regenerate reference to select the appropriate scope. A regeneration can process many files; back up site media and consider the library’s size and hosting limits before a large run.

Use an admin plugin
If you do not have shell access, an admin plugin may provide a regeneration interface. The WordPress.org listing for Simple Image Sizes describes creating custom sizes and choosing sizes to regenerate under Settings → Media; its listing specifies PHP 8. The listing for reGenerate Thumbnails Advanced describes selective rebuilding, including featured images. Check each plugin’s current compatibility with your WordPress, PHP, and theme setup before using it, and back up media before bulk changes.
Which method should you use?

Troubleshooting
The page has no featured-image control
The active theme may not declare post-thumbnail support for pages. Add or enable add_theme_support( 'post-thumbnails' ) for the page post type, then check the editor sidebar and theme or page-builder settings.
The image appears, but not at the intended dimensions
Check that the template requests the registered size name, not a different standard size. Also confirm the requested dimensions and crop match the layout; proportional scaling with crop set to false does not force a fixed frame.
The custom size is missing for older images
The size registration does not rebuild existing image derivatives. Run a suitable regeneration process with WP-CLI or an admin plugin, after backing up the media library.

The crop cuts off the important part of the image
Adjust the crop dimensions or position in add_image_size(). A centered hard crop may remove a subject near an edge; a top- or bottom-aligned crop can help when the composition warrants it.
A regeneration run is too large for the site environment
Bulk processing time and performance depend on the site’s media library and hosting setup. Use the regeneration tool’s scope controls where available, and consult the host’s resource limits before processing the whole library. The cited plugin listings do not establish performance for a specific site.
