A black MacBook Air screen does not necessarily mean the display is broken: it can happen during normal startup or result from a startup, accessory, disk, or firmware problem. Hold the power button for up to 10 seconds, disconnect nonessential accessories, and then use the Recovery steps for your Mac’s processor type; run Disk Utility First Aid before considering a macOS reinstall.

The steps below begin with options that do not erase your files. A normal macOS reinstall from Recovery can keep files and user settings intact, but erasing the disk deletes its data and should not be your first response.

1. Check whether the Mac is actually off

A Mac is completely shut down when the screen is black and all lights—including keyboard or Touch Bar lights, where applicable—are off.

If it appears to be running but shows only a blank screen:

  1. Press and hold the power button—or the Touch ID button on models with Touch ID—for up to 10 seconds, until the Mac turns off.
  2. Release the button.
  3. Press and release the power button normally to start it.

Apple calls this a blank screen; it can be black, gray, or blue, and may appear briefly during normal startup. If you see an Apple logo or progress bar, wait rather than repeatedly forcing the Mac off. During a macOS update, the progress bar can move slowly or pause for a long time, and blank screens can alternate with the Apple logo.

2. Disconnect accessories and charge the Mac

Shut down the Mac if possible, then disconnect accessories that are not needed for startup:

  • USB hubs and docks
  • External drives and flash drives
  • Printers
  • Mobile devices and their cables
  • External monitors
  • Other USB accessories and adapters

Connect the MacBook Air directly to its power adapter and try starting it again. Faulty accessories or cables can prevent normal startup. If the Mac does not respond, leave it connected to power for several minutes before trying the power button again.

3. Identify your MacBook Air

Recovery and Safe Mode instructions differ between Apple-silicon and Intel MacBook Air models.

  1. If you can reach macOS, open Apple menu  > About This Mac.
  2. If the panel shows Chip followed by a chip name, the Mac has Apple silicon.
  3. If it shows Processor followed by an Intel processor, it is an Intel Mac.

4. Start macOS Recovery

Use the procedure that matches your Mac:

Mac type How to enter Recovery
Apple silicon Shut down, hold the power button until startup options appear, select Options, then click Continue.
Intel Shut down, press and release the power button, then immediately hold Command (⌘)-R until the Apple logo or a spinning globe appears.

Apple-silicon MacBook Air

  1. Choose Apple menu  > Shut Down. If the Mac will not shut down, hold the power button for up to 10 seconds.
  2. Press and hold the power button until the startup screen shows the internal startup volume and an Options button.
  3. Click Options, then click Continue.
  4. If prompted, choose a recovery volume and click Next.
  5. Select an administrator account, click Next, enter its password, and click Continue.

Intel MacBook Air

  1. Shut down the Mac.
  2. Press and release the power button.
  3. Immediately press and hold Command (⌘)-R until the Apple logo or a spinning globe appears.
  4. Choose Wi-Fi if prompted.
  5. If asked to select a recovery volume, choose the startup disk, usually Macintosh HD, and click Next.
  6. Select a known user account, click Next, and enter its login password.

Command-R starts built-in Recovery on Intel Macs. Option-Command-R and Shift-Option-Command-R start Internet Recovery and can offer different macOS versions for reinstallation. Internet Recovery errors such as -2001F, -2002F, or -2003F generally indicate a network problem. Try another network, Ethernet if available, or the other Recovery key combinations.

If Intel startup keys do not work, use the Mac’s built-in keyboard. A wireless keyboard may not be recognized early enough; try a wired keyboard or connect the wireless keyboard with a cable. A PC keyboard or firmware password can also interfere with startup key combinations.

5. Run Disk Utility First Aid

Use First Aid before reinstalling macOS. It checks the file system and repairs certain startup-disk errors.

  1. In macOS Recovery, select Disk Utility, then click Continue.
  2. Choose View > Show All Devices.
  3. Select a volume in the sidebar.
  4. Click First Aid, then click Run.
  5. Follow the onscreen instructions and click Done when it finishes.
  6. Repeat First Aid for each volume shown.
  7. Select the container and run First Aid on it as well.

Restart the Mac after First Aid completes. If the blank screen returns, enter Recovery again and proceed to the macOS reinstall step.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If First Aid reports errors it cannot repair, Apple’s recovery path is to erase the disk and reinstall macOS. Erasing deletes the disk’s data, so do not proceed if you need files that are not backed up. If the startup disk does not appear in Disk Utility or erasing fails, the Mac or its storage may need service.

6. Reinstall macOS from Recovery

From the Recovery window, choose Reinstall macOS [name], click Continue, and follow the onscreen instructions. When asked where to install macOS, select the current macOS disk.

A normal Recovery reinstall can keep your files and user settings intact, and requires an internet connection. Captive-portal Wi-Fi, such as hotel, library, coffee-shop, and some business networks, may not work in Recovery; use a normal password-protected network where possible.

Do not interrupt an installation just because a progress bar moves slowly or pauses. If the Mac remains unusable after Recovery and reinstall attempts, arrange service; firmware recovery may be appropriate after an interrupted installation or power event.

7. Try Safe Mode

Safe Mode is a diagnostic test for software that loads during startup. If the Mac starts in Safe Mode, startup software or login items may be involved; this does not prove the display hardware is healthy.

Apple silicon

  1. Shut down the Mac.
  2. Hold the power button until startup options appear.
  3. Select the startup volume.
  4. Hold Shift and click Continue in Safe Mode.
  5. Log in when the Mac restarts. Safe Boot should appear in the menu bar.

Intel

  1. Turn on or restart the Mac.
  2. Immediately hold Shift until the login window appears.
  3. Log in; macOS may ask you to log in a second time. Safe Boot should appear in the menu bar.

To verify the boot mode after logging in, hold Option while choosing Apple menu  > System Information. Select Software and check Boot Mode under System Software Overview. Safe means Safe Mode; Normal means the Mac did not start in Safe Mode.

8. Update macOS after the screen returns

Once you can use the desktop, install available macOS and firmware updates:

  1. Open Apple menu  > System Settings > General > Software Update.
  2. Install any available update.
  3. Restart when prompted.

To review automatic update settings, click the information button next to Automatic Updates. Current options include Download new updates when available, Install macOS updates, and Install Security Responses and system files. A Mac laptop must be connected to its power adapter to automatically download updates. Older macOS versions use System Preferences rather than System Settings, so labels may differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Check an external display separately

If the built-in MacBook Air screen works but an external monitor is black, troubleshoot the monitor connection rather than macOS startup.

  1. Check the monitor’s power cable and video cable at both ends.
  2. Replace a questionable cable or adapter; one that cannot support the required resolution or refresh rate can produce a dark screen.
  3. Disconnect the hub or dock and connect the monitor directly to a Mac port.
  4. Open Apple menu  > System Settings > Displays. On older macOS, open System Preferences > Displays.
  5. Hold Option to reveal Detect Displays, then click it.

With the MacBook lid closed, it must be connected to power and used with an external keyboard and mouse for the external display to operate. On Apple-silicon MacBook Air models, macOS may ask permission to connect an external display accessory; if you do not allow it, the display remains dark. Check your model’s supported number, resolution, and refresh-rate limits before connecting multiple displays.

10. Consider firmware revive or restore only when appropriate

An Apple-silicon MacBook Air, or an Intel Mac with a T2 Security Chip, may need firmware revival or restoration if it turns on to an unresolved blank screen, shows an exclamation point in a circle, enters firmware recovery mode, or fails after an interrupted macOS installation or power event.

Apple’s current procedure requires the affected Mac, another Mac running macOS 14 or later with internet access, sufficient host storage (Apple says 32 GB should be more than enough), and a USB-C-to-USB-C cable that supports data and charging. Do not use a Thunderbolt 3 cable.

For an affected Mac laptop, connect the cable to the correct DFU port. Hold the power button for up to 10 seconds to turn it off, then press and release it. Immediately hold left Control + left Option + right Shift + power. For Apple silicon, hold all four keys for about 10 seconds, release the keyboard keys while continuing to hold power for up to another 10 seconds, and wait for the DFU window in Finder on the host Mac. Click Allow if prompted.

Firmware procedures can affect the Mac’s software state. Follow Apple’s current instructions carefully; if you are unsure about the DFU port or using a second Mac, arrange service.

Do not apply outdated fixes indiscriminately

Common advice What applies now
Reset the SMC on every MacBook Air SMC reset is for Intel Macs. Apple silicon does not need an SMC reset.
Press Command-R on every MacBook Air Command-R is the normal Recovery shortcut for Intel Macs. Apple silicon uses the power button and startup-options screen.
Reset NVRAM on every black-screen Mac Option-Command-P-R is listed for Intel startup combinations, not as a general Apple-silicon black-screen fix.
Assume a black screen means a failed panel Startup, accessories, disk errors, updates, firmware, and external-display connections can also cause a blank screen.

When to arrange service

Arrange Apple or authorized service if the Mac still shows a blank screen after power cycling, accessory removal, Recovery, First Aid, and macOS reinstallation—or if it cannot enter Recovery. Service is also appropriate if the startup disk is missing from Disk Utility, erasing fails, the Mac has physical damage or liquid exposure, or firmware recovery does not resolve the problem.

Before handing over the Mac, tell the technician whether the issue affects the built-in display, an external display, or both, and whether the Mac responds to the power button, startup options, or Recovery.

FAQ

Why is my MacBook Air screen black but the Mac is still on?

It may be stuck during startup, affected by an accessory, unable to load macOS, or experiencing a display or firmware problem. Hold the power button for up to 10 seconds, disconnect accessories, and retry startup before assuming the panel has failed.

How do I force-start a MacBook Air with a black screen?

Hold the power or Touch ID button for up to 10 seconds until the Mac turns off. Wait briefly, then press and release it normally. If it still fails, use Recovery: hold the power button on Apple-silicon models, or use Command-R immediately after pressing the power button on Intel models.

Can I fix a MacBook Air black screen without losing files?

Power cycling, removing accessories, Safe Mode, Disk Utility First Aid, and a normal macOS reinstall from Recovery do not immediately erase the Mac. Do not choose Erase unless you have a backup or accept that the disk’s data will be deleted.

What is the Recovery method for an M1, M2, or newer MacBook Air?

Shut down, then hold the power button until startup options appear. Select Options and click Continue. Command-R is not the normal Recovery method on Apple-silicon MacBook Air models.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my external monitor stay black while the MacBook Air works?

Check the monitor’s power and video cables, connect it directly instead of through a hub, verify its resolution and refresh-rate support, and use Displays settings with Option held to reveal Detect Displays. Closed-lid use also requires power, an external keyboard, and a mouse.

The Bottom Line

Start with a 10-second power-button shutdown, remove nonessential accessories, and retry. Identify whether the MacBook Air is Apple silicon or Intel, enter the matching Recovery mode, run Disk Utility First Aid, and reinstall macOS without erasing when appropriate. If Recovery is unavailable, the startup disk is missing, or the blank screen persists, arrange service; Apple-silicon and T2 models may require firmware revival or restoration.
