If your Bluetooth headphones keep cutting out, first check whether Bluetooth still shows them as connected when the sound stops. Then charge the headphones, move the source device closer, disconnect any second paired device, and restart both devices. If the problem persists, test the headphones with another phone or computer to narrow down whether the issue follows the headphones or the original source.
First, identify what is cutting out
When the sound disappears, look at the Bluetooth status on your phone or computer. If the headphones still show as connected, investigate playback, the app, audio routing, or a connection-quality setting. If they disconnect, start with charge, distance, interference, and pairing.
This distinction is a troubleshooting guide, not a definitive diagnosis: a connected status does not rule out a weak or unstable link, and a dropout alone does not prove the headphones are faulty.
Try these fixes in order
- Charge the headphones and bring the source closer. Charge the headphones, then test with your phone or computer nearby and fewer obstructions between the devices. Microsoft notes that some Bluetooth devices may fail to maintain a connection when battery is low; distance can also contribute to connection problems. Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guide, along with Apple’s guidance for wireless-headphone audio dropouts, recommends basic checks such as charge and proximity.
- Test in a different location. If the sound cuts out in a station, train, or other area crowded with wireless devices, try again somewhere quieter. Sony identifies unstable environments such as stations and trains as situations where sound may cut out. Sony’s guidance is for a specific headphone support context; results can vary by model and environment.
- Disconnect other paired devices temporarily. Pause or disconnect a second phone, computer, or other device connected to the headphones. If your model supports multipoint, turn it off temporarily and test again. Bose says a secondary device may interrupt the main audio stream on its supported product; this is a model-specific possibility, not a universal explanation. Bose’s intermittent-audio guidance covers QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen).
- Restart the headphones and the source. Turn the headphones off and back on, then restart the phone or computer. Reconnect and play audio again. Restarting is a simple way to clear a temporary fault, and it appears in manufacturer troubleshooting guidance.
- Check the audio output on a computer. Confirm the headphones are selected as the output both in the operating system and in the music, meeting, or other playback app if that app has its own audio setting. Close unnecessary applications and restart the computer if the issue continues. Sony recommends closing unnecessary applications and restarting the computer for computer playback problems; menu names vary by system and app. Sony’s computer-audio troubleshooting is specific to its support guidance.
- On Windows, run the Bluetooth troubleshooter and check for updates. On Windows 11, use the Get Help Bluetooth troubleshooter if it is available. Also toggle Bluetooth off and on, check charge and range, install available Windows updates, and restart the PC. If needed, remove the headphones from Bluetooth settings and add them again. Microsoft’s instructions apply to Windows 10 and 11; exact menus can vary by version. See Microsoft’s connection troubleshooting steps.
- Check nearby USB 3.0 devices on a PC. If an unshielded USB device is plugged into a USB 3.0 port, move it farther away or temporarily disconnect it and test the headphones again. Microsoft notes that unshielded USB devices can sometimes interfere with Bluetooth connections. Microsoft explains this possible interference.
- Try a stability setting only if your model offers one. Some headphones provide an app setting that prioritizes a stable connection, potentially at the expense of sound quality. Sony recommends this option for supported products; it is not a universal Bluetooth control. Check the current app or support page for your exact model before changing settings. Sony describes the setting in its support guidance.
- Remove and pair the headphones again. Use the source device’s Bluetooth settings to forget or remove the headphones, then pair them again using the maker’s instructions. If you are considering a factory reset or firmware update, follow the current instructions for your exact model: reset steps and available controls differ by manufacturer and product. Microsoft recommends removing and re-adding a Bluetooth device for connection problems; Bose also recommends a product reset for intermittent audio on its supported headphones. Use another device to narrow down the cause
Pair the headphones with a second phone or computer and play audio long enough to see whether the interruption returns. If possible, also connect another Bluetooth audio device to the original source.

- The interruptions happen with multiple sources: Check headphone settings and the model’s support guidance for firmware, reset, or hardware service options.
- The interruptions happen only with one source: Focus on that phone or computer’s Bluetooth adapter, software, playback app, and audio output selection.
- The result is inconsistent: Repeat the test in a quieter location and with other paired devices disconnected; location and multipoint behavior can affect results.
This cross-test helps isolate which side deserves attention, but it does not by itself prove that the headphones or source device has a hardware fault. Bose recommends trying another device as one way to check Bluetooth functionality. Bose’s dropped-connection guidance is for QuietComfort SE Headphones.

If the cutouts continue after you have tested another source, removed competing connections, and re-paired the headphones, check the manufacturer’s current support page for your exact model. Use its directions for firmware updates, factory resets, and service. Do not assume a reset combination or app setting from another model will apply to yours.
