If Discord isn’t picking up your microphone, first find out whether the mic works in another app. Then check your device’s microphone permissions and Discord’s input selection and test. Those checks help separate a connection or system problem from a Discord setting, without buying anything.
1. Check the microphone, connection, and mute switch
- Check the hardware. Make sure a headset or USB microphone is firmly connected and its hardware mute switch is off. If it uses USB, try another port. Discord recommends checking the connection and testing the mic in another app (Discord Voice, Video, & Streaming Guide; Discord input troubleshooting).
- Test it outside Discord. Use another app that records or captures audio. If the mic is silent there too, focus on the connection, device mute, system audio settings, or audio drivers before changing Discord settings. The test can identify that the problem is broader than Discord, but cannot establish which component has failed.
If the mic works elsewhere, continue to permissions and Discord’s input settings.
2. Allow microphone access in your operating system or browser
A microphone can appear in Discord’s device list but still be blocked by privacy permissions. Check the controls for the device and the kind of Discord client you use.
Windows 11
Go to Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone. Turn on Microphone access, Let apps access your microphone, and Let desktop apps access your microphone. Discord desktop is a desktop app, so check the desktop-app switch as well as the general access controls. See Microsoft’s Windows microphone permission instructions.

Windows 10
Open Settings > Privacy > Microphone and allow microphone access for the device and apps. Check desktop-app access if you use the Discord desktop client. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; these steps describe its microphone controls, not continued Windows support.
macOS, iPhone, and Android
Allow Discord microphone access in the operating system’s privacy or app-permission settings. Discord’s voice troubleshooting guide directs mobile users to check OS permissions and covers mobile voice settings.

Discord in a browser
Allow microphone access for Discord in the browser’s site permissions, then reload the page if prompted. Browser permission is separate from the operating system’s microphone access.
3. Choose and test the microphone in Discord
Desktop app or browser
- Open User Settings > Voice & Video.
- Under Input Device, select the microphone you actually use by name rather than assuming Default points to it.
- Check Input Mode. With Voice Activity, Discord detects speech automatically. With Push to Talk, you must press the configured key while speaking; otherwise the mic can seem silent.
- Run Mic Test or select Let’s Check, depending on the label shown in your client. Speak and see whether Discord receives input. Discord’s guides cover input selection, input mode, and testing (Voice and Video Troubleshooting Guide; Voice, Video, & Streaming Guide).
Mobile app
Tap your avatar, open the gear, then go to Voice. Check the input mode and available voice settings, and make sure Discord has microphone permission in your phone’s settings.

If Discord detects the mic but people still can’t hear you
A successful mic test is evidence that Discord is receiving input; it does not confirm that you are unmuted in the call or allowed to speak in the server or channel. Check Discord’s local mute state and ask a server moderator whether speaking permissions apply. Discord notes that server permissions can affect your ability to speak (Discord Voice and Video Troubleshooting Guide).

Restart, then reset voice settings
Restart Discord and your device. If the input still fails, open User Settings > Voice & Video > Debugging and choose Reset Voice and Video Settings. This resets Discord’s voice and video settings, so you may need to choose your input and preferred mode again. Menu labels can vary by client version; Discord’s troubleshooting guide describes this reset.

Desktop or browser: try later-stage audio options
If the mic works in other apps but Discord remains broken, Discord also lists switching the Audio Subsystem to Legacy and turning off Enable Quality of Service High Packet Priority as troubleshooting options. Try these only after checking permissions, device selection, and input mode. The controls may move as Discord updates its client; see Discord’s desktop and browser audio troubleshooting steps.
Mobile: distinguish mic detection from a disrupted call
If Discord receives mic input but a call is still disrupted, Discord suggests checking the connection (for example, comparing Wi-Fi with mobile data) and disabling battery saver as supplemental voice troubleshooting. These checks address call disruption; they do not replace microphone permissions or input selection. For iOS, Discord also documents cache-clearing guidance in its voice troubleshooting guide.

Contact Discord Support if detection still fails
If the microphone works in another app but Discord does not receive it after these checks, contact Discord Support. Include your device and operating system, Discord version and client type (desktop, browser, or mobile), input and output devices, and screenshots of your Voice & Video settings. For a mic that fails in every app, investigate the device connection and system audio or driver settings first.
