Windows 11 and Windows 10 do not include a documented built-in tool that scans file contents and groups duplicates. For a few suspected copies, compare them in File Explorer; for larger personal collections, use a duplicate-finder tool and review its results before deleting. If you only need to free disk space, Windows cleanup tools can help—but they do not prove that two files contain the same data.
First decide whether you need to find duplicates or just free space
Windows’ cleanup features target categories such as temporary files, large or unused files, unused apps, and Recycle Bin contents. They are not a documented content-based duplicate scan. Microsoft’s Storage Sense guidance explains how automated cleanup works, while its free-up-space instructions cover other cleanup options.
For general storage cleanup
In Windows 11, open Start > Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations. Review categories such as Temporary files, Large or unused files, Files synced to the cloud, and Unused apps; Windows shows estimated space before you select items to remove. For Windows 10, Microsoft documents Disk Cleanup where Storage Sense is unavailable, as well as manual review in File Explorer.
Storage Sense can run automatically on the system drive and can be configured to clear selected Recycle Bin or Downloads items. Downloads and cloud content are not managed unless you specify them. Review its settings before enabling or changing automatic cleanup.

For actual duplicate detection
Use File Explorer for a handful of likely copies, a carefully scoped PowerShell workflow if you are comfortable verifying a script, or a graphical duplicate finder to group candidates. A matching name, size, or date is useful for narrowing a search, but none of those attributes alone proves that two files have identical contents.
Compare a few likely duplicates in File Explorer
This manual approach works best when you already know which folders or files to check. Personal files are commonly found in locations such as Downloads, Pictures, Music, and Videos. Avoid treating Windows or application folders as a cleanup target.

- Auto-Mark Duplicates – Automatically Mark Duplicate Files and Remove Them Easily.

- Open the folders containing the suspected copies in File Explorer.
- Select View > Details so you can compare visible file information.
- Compare each file’s full path, name, size, and date modified. You can sort a folder by size to bring large files into view; Microsoft describes this as a way to identify cleanup opportunities, not to confirm duplicates.
- Open or preview the candidates when their contents or versions matter. Decide which copy and location you want to keep before selecting anything for deletion.
- If a file is important, make a separate copy to storage you control before removing another copy. Delete only the candidates you have reviewed.
Deleted files may remain in the Recycle Bin, so their space may not be fully reclaimed until you empty it. Check the Bin first to make sure it does not contain other files you still need.
Choose the approach that fits your collection
| Approach | Best suited to | What it tells you | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| File Explorer review | A handful of known candidates | Shows paths and visible details such as name, size, and date | Manual; visible attributes do not prove the contents match |
| PowerShell workflow | Technical users working in a scoped folder | Can enumerate files and support script-based comparison | Requires a verified script and careful review; Microsoft’s cited file-operation guidance is not a complete duplicate-finder recipe |
| Graphical duplicate finder | Larger personal collections or users who want grouped results | Can present candidate groups for inspection | Review paths and selections before deletion |
| Storage Sense, Cleanup recommendations, or Disk Cleanup | General Windows storage cleanup | Identifies certain cleanup categories or large and unused content | Does not establish that file contents are duplicates |
Use PowerShell only with a discovery-first workflow
PowerShell offers a no-extra-GUI route, but finding duplicates requires more than listing files. Microsoft Learn documents Get-ChildItem with -Recurse for enumerating files and Remove-Item for removing them. Its PowerShell file-system documentation does not provide a complete duplicate-grouping script, so do not assume a deletion command copied from elsewhere is safe.

- Sorted Photo Gallery - Removing unnecessary duplicate photo files offers a sleek & up-to-date photo library.
- Supports Internal & External Storage - It supports both internal and external storage and gives accurate results for duplicate images on the devices.
- Automatically Mark Images - The app includes auto mark option along with selection assistant. It makes it easy to customize the selection of duplicate images.
- Recover Extra Storage Space - Delete unwanted duplicate and similar photos from your computer and external devices to recover tons of storage space.
A content-based workflow can calculate a full-content hash for each candidate file, group files with matching hashes, and then list their paths for review. A matching full-content hash is strong evidence that the files contain identical bytes; matching filenames alone is not. Keep discovery and reporting separate from deletion, and retain the specific copy you want before removing any others. Do not run a bulk-deletion command until you understand exactly which paths it targets.
Review grouped results from a graphical duplicate finder
dupeGuru is one option for users who prefer a graphical review. Its project repository describes Standard, Music, and Picture modes. The user guide explains that results are arranged in groups with a reference file and duplicate files, and recommends reviewing results before sending marked files to the Recycle Bin.

That review matters: the project’s version 4.3.1 release notes record a fix for an issue that could mark non-duplicates during a standard content scan. This is a reason to inspect candidate groups and paths rather than accept every selection automatically. Use the project repository as the source for download information; the available documentation does not establish a best-in-class tool, current installer version, or independent performance comparison.

Online-only cloud files and locally available files can look like part of the same collection, but making a OneDrive file online-only is not the same as deleting a duplicate. Microsoft says Storage Sense can make inactive OneDrive content online-only without permanently deleting it; you can make the file locally available again with an internet connection and free disk space. Files marked Always keep on this device are exempt from that setting. See Microsoft’s Storage Sense guidance before interpreting cloud status icons or changes in local disk usage.

Start small and protect the copy you want to keep
Begin with one personal folder, such as Downloads, Pictures, or a dedicated archive. Review a small group, confirm the paths and contents, and remove only files you have decided are redundant. If the goal is simply to recover space rather than identify identical files, use Windows cleanup recommendations or Disk Cleanup instead.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says it no longer provides free Windows Update updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date; deleting duplicates does not change the operating system’s support status.
