You do not need to replace a console just because it is old. If it reliably plays the games and supports the services you care about, keeping it is a reasonable choice. Consider repair or replacement when a recurring fault, a support change you have verified for your exact model, or a specific unmet need makes the cost worthwhile.
Start with what is actually wrong or missing
Before comparing consoles, name the problem you want to solve. It might be unreliable operation, a game you want that your system cannot play, an online feature you need, insufficient storage, an accessibility requirement, or a display or peripheral limitation. If there is no important problem or missing capability, replacing the console buys no clearly defined benefit.
Age by itself is not a useful replacement threshold. There is no universal age or repair-cost percentage that determines when replacement makes sense; the answer depends on your model, the fault, your location, and the prices and terms available to you.
If the console has a fault, compare repair and exchange options
Get an estimate before deciding
Check the warranty and request an estimate from the manufacturer or a reputable repair service. Nintendo UK says repair costs depend on examination, and some repairs may be covered by warranty. Out-of-warranty or accidental-damage cases may incur fees; Nintendo says customers can reject an estimate. See Nintendo UK’s repair process and repair charges. These terms are UK-specific; check the service terms for your country.

Check for a refurbished exchange
A refurbished exchange may be another option, but availability is regional. Sony describes a fee-based refurbished console exchange in Ireland; confirm the current process, applicable fee, and service terms on Sony’s Ireland repair and replacement page. Do not assume the same option or terms apply elsewhere.
Account for uncertainty and downtime
Compare each option on more than its quoted price. A repair may not resolve several faults, and a service process can leave you without the console. Weigh that uncertainty and downtime against the warranty or service terms for a repair, exchange, or new purchase.

Compare the real cost of keeping, repairing, or replacing
Use a confirmed resale or trade-in offer when estimating what a replacement will cost you. Do not subtract an assumed trade-in value from the purchase price. Microsoft documents eligible console trade-ins through Teladvance in the United States and Canada, and through Recommerce in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom. Its stated requirements include that the console powers on and is functional; eligibility and offers depend on the device and market. Check Microsoft’s trade-in information for current coverage and the offer for your model.
For a replacement, compare equivalent configurations rather than headline prices. Check disc versus digital editions, included storage and features, subscriptions you would need, and whether your existing games, controllers, and accessories will work. Then ask whether the new console solves the particular problem you identified.

Use price announcements as anchors, not current quotes
Sony Interactive Entertainment announced recommended retail prices for the PS5 effective April 2, 2026: US$649.99 in the United States, £569.99 in the United Kingdom, €649.99 in Europe, and ¥97,980 in Japan. Sony also listed different prices for Digital Edition and PS5 Pro models. These are dated regional recommended prices, not guarantees of current street prices or prices in other markets. Check Sony’s March 27, 2026 price announcement and compare local offers for the model you would actually buy.
Verify support for your exact console
Do not treat general lifecycle guidance as proof that a particular PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo console has lost support. Microsoft says of its product lifecycle policy: “Once a product reaches the end of support, or a service retires, there will be no new security updates, non-security updates, or assisted support.” That describes Microsoft’s general policy, not the status of a specific console model. Make the decision using the trade-offs that matter to you
When several options could work, compare them against the same criteria rather than relying on one number or the console’s age:
- Out-of-pocket cost after a confirmed trade-in or resale value.
- Whether the option fixes the fault or meets the need you identified.
- Warranty and service terms.
- Downtime and uncertainty during service.
- Access to the games and services you care about.
- Compatibility with games, controllers, and accessories you already own.
Keeping a working console is sensible when it continues to meet your needs. If it does not, use an actual repair estimate, verified exchange terms, and local replacement and resale prices to decide whether the improvement is worth the cost.
