To check whether a bridge is open, use the current travel-status service run by the transportation agency responsible for that crossing—often the state’s 511 service or Department of Transportation (DOT) website. Search the bridge and the roads leading to it, then check again shortly before departure. A camera can help confirm what traffic looks like, but an empty incident list does not guarantee the bridge will stay open.
How do I check if a bridge is closed?
- Identify who maintains the bridge. Determine whether it is on a state highway, county or municipal road, toll facility, or another system. Search for the responsible agency’s official travel information page; a nationwide directory can help you find a state service, but it cannot confirm a particular bridge’s status.
- Open the official live status service. Search the bridge name, route number, crossing, and direction in the agency’s 511 or travel-information service. Review closures, incidents, construction, detours, weather impacts, and special alerts. In some regions, you can call 511 and request conditions for a named bridge. The Bay Area 511 service, for example, supports bridge traffic-condition requests (511.org FAQs).
- Check both approaches. The bridge itself may be passable while an approach road, ramp, or connecting route is closed. Review the route into and out of the crossing, not only the bridge entry.
- Look for an official camera, if available. A camera image can show visible queues or conditions, but it is a corroborating visual check—not a substitute for closure alerts. NJDOT says NJ511 camera images refresh approximately every 30 seconds; that rate applies to its service, not all traffic cameras (NJDOT: NJ 511 Travel Information).
- Recheck close to departure. Bridge and road conditions can change after you first check. If a service is unavailable or the bridge is missing from the map, contact the agency or local road authority responsible for it rather than relying on an old map, general navigation app, or social post.
Where can I find bridge traffic alerts?
In the United States, start with the destination state DOT’s current 511 or traveler-information service. For example, North Carolina directs travelers to DriveNC.gov for the latest travel information overnight and during emergencies (NCDOT 511 Information Line). Some services also provide crossing-specific information: Bay Area 511 supports bridge traffic-condition requests, while NJ511 offers bridge and tunnel travel times (511.org FAQs; NJDOT: NJ 511 Travel Information).

If you do not know which state service to use, the National Weather Service’s road-conditions directory links to state resources, but it says it was updated February 6, 2023. Treat it as a starting point and verify the current link or number with the state DOT (NWS Cheyenne: United States Road Conditions). A local bridge may be outside the state map’s coverage, so check the county or city road authority when needed.
How can I check whether my vehicle can use the bridge?
Closure status does not establish that a bridge is suitable for a tall, heavy, or oversized vehicle. Check applicable height-clearance and weight or load restrictions separately, including the direction of travel and the route segment covered by the information.

Indiana illustrates why coverage matters: INDOT’s clearance map covers interstates, U.S. highways, and state routes, and its page directs drivers to seek municipal approval for city and county roads. These are Indiana-specific instructions, not a national rule. Consult the responsible agency’s current restrictions and closures for the bridge and route you plan to use (INDOT: Restrictions/Closings).

Check before setting out. If you need to use a smartphone during the trip, pull over somewhere safe first. Bay Area 511 advises checking traffic before leaving, calling 511 for voice-activated travel information, or pulling over to check a phone (511.org FAQs). Use a voice service only when it can be done safely and legally where you are driving.
