The release is dated October 5, 2026, and Google lists the changes as phone features; it does not promise that they are already available on every device or that every NFC tag will work.
What the NFC update lets you do
Google’s Google Play services v26.39 release notes say: “With NFC support, you can quickly access Find Hub tag details and settings or identify lost tags when you tap the tag with your phone.” The feature applies to Find Hub network tags.
That creates two practical scenarios. If you own the tag, tapping it can take you to its Find Hub details and settings. If someone finds a lost tag, they can tap it with a phone to identify it, depending on what the tag supports. Google does not say that all NFC tags are compatible or that every tag will reveal its owner’s personal details.
How to use a phone to identify a lost tag
- Check that the item has a tag compatible with Google Find Hub. The v26.39 note does not provide a brand-by-brand compatibility list.
- Hold a phone with NFC against the tag. Google describes tapping the tag but does not specify an exact phone model, settings path, or rollout schedule.
- Follow the information shown on the phone to identify the tag or open its Find Hub details. What appears can depend on the tag’s supported behavior; this is not a guarantee that owner contact information will be displayed.
Google’s Android Help instructions for identifying AirTags describe a separate AirTag process and note that some devices may share a serial number or other owner information. That guidance should not be taken as a promise that every Find Hub tag displays the same information.

Tag setup also gets a change
During Find Hub network tag registration, v26.39 lets users choose a category, rename the tag, and configure options such as Left-Behind Reminders as part of setup. Previously, those choices could require returning to the app afterward to configure them. Google’s release note does not provide a step-by-step menu path, so the exact screens may vary.
Availability and what you need
The update is Google Play services v26.39, dated October 5, 2026. Google labels the NFC and registration additions as phone features, but does not publish a complete device-by-device rollout schedule. A compatible Find Hub tag is optional: the update is software, while a tag is needed to track a physical belonging.

The Find Hub app listing describes locating phones, tablets, headphones, and other accessories, including offline devices. If you are choosing a tag, verify that its product specifications explicitly confirm Find Hub compatibility and check whether it supports nearby NFC identification; the release notes do not establish specific brands, prices, or a recommended model.
What the update means for privacy
Google’s Find Hub app listing says network location data is encrypted and not visible even to Google. Separately, Android Help says unknown-tracker alerts are delivered through Play Services and that the location and detection timestamps used for alerts are temporarily processed and stored in encrypted form on the device, not shared with Google or other users. These are descriptions of different functions and should not be treated as one identical data flow.

Related option for lost luggage
Find Hub’s location-sharing feature can also help when checked luggage goes missing. Google announced on March 3, 2026, that users could share the location of a compatible tag with participating airlines through a secure link. Sharing can be stopped by the user, links expire after seven days, and sharing is disabled once the phone detects the item is back with its owner. At announcement time, Google said more than 10 major global airlines accepted Find Hub locations, naming Ajet, Air India, China Airlines, Lufthansa Group airlines, Saudia Airlines, Scandinavian Airlines, and Turkish Airlines. That was Google’s dated figure, not a verified current count. See Google’s announcement about Find Hub and airline luggage recovery for details.
Google also said it was working with Samsonite on compatible suitcase designs incorporating Find Hub technology. That is a separate product effort, not a requirement for the NFC feature; check the exact model and its availability before relying on it.
